I was fortunate enough to attend Mass on a Saturday morning at Westminster Cathedral and it was so beautiful. I also went the next day to the Mass for the first Sunday of Advent at St. James Parish in Spanish Square. Both were incredibly lovely and elevating and beautiful. My soul was uplifted and soothed like a refreshing drink of water. My parish here in the US is the second biggest in LA, and I love it, but the Church proper is so modern, the melody and tempo of the sung responses is frequently changing. I don’t hold the Tridentine any more valid than the Novus Ordo, or Catholics that attend one or the other more “Catholic” than the other. I am a post Vatican 2 Catholic. But I will say it is lovely to be able to know how something is going to be sung or done. It allows me to focus on the beauty of the Mass in its entirety.

1. Reform the Novus Ordo(Think Ad Orientum, Communion on Tongue and kneeling, and an overall return to reverence, obedience, love, and sacrifice.) 2. Restore infallible teachings broken by the Second Vatican Council (Salvation through the Church Alone, Praying for the conversion of the Jewish People.) 3. Promote the learning of Latin for canonical and liturgical reasons. 4. Ensure survival of the Latin liturgy along with the newly revised Novus Ordo 5. Stop desecrating our alters with services with other sects and religions(Hindus have pagan ritual on Fatima alter, Church of England desecrates our alter with false mass.)

Love the decor idea, would implement some of those ideas myself in my dreams too. Protestant though :). But concerning theology training I have heard many say that in the protestant realm too and they have implemented it for many decades now and we have suffered for it, So I advise don't go down that route, Do remember even though Jesus chose uneducated men to start with they did complete their degree with Him. They spent three years with Him as their Rabbi and he taught them hard. And rebuked them when they were dull of hearing/learning. I also would like more emphasis on Jesus actually calling them rather than man picking them.

So many great points. Aesthetics really have suffered horribly since Vatican II, although critically not because of it. Notre Dame de Ronchamp by Le Corbusier comes to mind as very much pre-Vatican II (completed 1955), but a hideous example of architectural elitism expressed in a space denuded of central meaning. (Frankly, it would be as comfortable as a modern art gallery or restaurant, and is thus a terrible church. No surprise when looking at Le Corbusier’s work that he was a militant fascist with profound disinterest in the person, and thus by definition in the very heart of Catholic Faith.) To be clear, I have no objection to any architecture, whether in an ancient or modern form. My problem is with bad architecture designed by architects who either fail utterly to understand the vocabulary they are using-and how and when the associated rules can be broken, or who simply think that form and function are theirs alone to divine based on this or that impulse and rationalization, but which invariably breaks down to ego. The same is also so true for music. It’s quality that counts. Not quantity of instruments and singers. If it’s some idiotic tune from the Gather Book, no pipe organ or chorus of angels can save that trite exercise. I also agree about your point about theologians only as bishops. A more practical approach to pastorship and Faith would seem more able to avoid many of the circular games in which the Church seems to so often find herself these days, arguing over and over on things that really don’t matter. Yes, theology is important. But the entire scope of Faith doesn’t need to be reduced to some precise orthodoxy to be effective. (A less theoretical approach would likely also have saved the many altar rails, ciboria, rood screens, crucifixes, statues, and other great ornaments ripped out of so many churches and cathedrals in the great iconoclasm of the last 40 years.) Fundamentally, the Catholic message is in danger, because the clergy seems to have forgotten what is truly necessary and compelling. (It’s the only way I can explain the pathetic sermons we get today. Long gone, it seems, are the great thunderers from the pulpit who kept congregations on the edge of the pew. Indeed, good luck finding a priest who doesn’t think he’s at some business conference when he abandons the pulpit and is reduced to a traipsing thing hanging off a distorted sound system, half-blown out by the electric guitar and liturgical drum set.) Not all of Africa can save a Church so hidden from herself. Because the problem isn’t demographics. It’s the bishops’ profound lack of self-confidence in Catholic identity; fundamental loss of the plot; and inability to inculcate change in the profound and affirming ways that once bloomed with saints like Benedict, Bernard, Francis, Dominic, and Ignatius. If the Church can’t figure this out, and soon, then North America will look like Europe, Latin America will continue its spectacular erosion, and Africa will eventually follow suit. It’s obvious. Pity all those Doctorates of Philosophy and Theology can’t see that.

1. Make all Masses ad orientem. 2. All the propers of the Mass MUST be said. If there's music, they must be sung. 3. Rescind the indults that allow for Communion in the hand and standing. 4. Make sexual abuse (and covering up sexual abuse) by a cleric an excommunicable offense that will also result in automatic laicization. 5. Latin Mass parishes must use the pre-1955 Holy Week. 6. Restoration of Lenten fasting and Friday abstinence. 7. Restoration of the season of Septuagesima. 8. Get rid of Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion. 9. In general, more promotion of the TLM (I would like to see the NO abolished, but I don't know how that would happen.)

I'd make it a requirement that churches have traditional architecture. Bring back old songs, and have violins, basses, cellos, violas, Organs, Pianos, and Pipe organs at church. I'd also start " camps" where the child molestorers would be held. ( basically a prison where they're stay for forever with no human contact. Also would be a section for priests who give up the priesthood in fear that they would molest children, where they could get counseling and spend their lives away from people.

As others have commented, it's not the Pope's role to «change» things in the Church. The best change would therefore be to UNDO all the changes made by the post Vatican II Popes, and go back to the former liturgy, discipline and theology. Today's Church is hemmorrhaging souls, whereas the 1950's Church was in constant expansion. All we have to do is reverse the trend and things will start working. As Benedict XVI said, «the future of the Church is in Her past».

Now you mentioned Gold.Everything the Vatican owns is a gift from the faithful. So it would be like regifting to others.Nothing wrong with bringing out the finest china for a special dinner.The eucharist is a fine meal feast fit for a king. Altar Vessels ; the chalice for example is the cup in which the wine and water of the Eucharistic Sacrifice is contained. It should be either of gold, or of silver with the cup gilt on the inside or it may have a cup only of silver, gilt on the inside; in which case the base and stem may be of any metal, provided it be solid, clean, and becoming. According to the Roman Missal it may be also made of stannum an alloy of tin and lead, with the cup gilt on the inside, but authors permit this only by way of exception in case of extreme poverty. Chalices made of glass, wood, copper, or brass are not permitted, and cannot be consecrated by the bishop. Yes good idea change the Vatican website and the awful artwork coming out of the Vatican now looks very strange.

tim spangler What is the significance of kissing the Pope’s ring? In fact all bishops of the Catholic church receive a ring. This symbolizes the commitment of the bishop to his diocese, not unlike a wedding ring. The ring has a seal on it. When a bishop marks a document he puts wax on the document and marks the hot wax with this ring, so the recipient knows it comes from him and isn't a forgery. The formal way to greet any Catholic bishop is to kiss his ring. In so doing, you are showing respect for the authority of their office.

No Brian we can't change the structure of the Church as it is now. And we would not place that thought in peoples mind that we have a say about the ordination of the Priest. It is God's will that it is done this way. The Choir also cannot be just one, because each soul who wants to sing for God is a calling also. It is beautiful when souls can be able to sing in the choir (just about anyone), even if it is not as good as everybody wants to hear, God does not care about that much, He is only concerned about the condition and the heartfelt service to Him. Because that's love. God wants the smoke of worship to rise up in heaven through all who want to sing for Him... beautiful tone or not... Have you read the Poem of Man-God yet? I recommend that you will be able to read this. You will understand so much what is in the mind of our Lord about our church, and what Priest and Bishop should do... And I tell you St Peter was also married to Porpheria, a Jewish woman. And the kid who have 2 fish and 5 loaves in John 6:1-14. St Peter asked that kid from Mother Mary and our Lord, to be left with Porpheria because of the work he is going to do for the Church, St Peter and Porpheria doesn't have any biological children. You see Peter willingly left his wife for God, He died in Rome and never came home to Porpheria. (The reason all Bishop must be willing to serve God only, because of the work they do, it is not easy. And Porpheria have accepted this, and she is very proud of her Simon that he was to be the pontiff of Christ. They maybe simple people and unlearned (like the theologians today) but they have special anointing, making them remember the teaching of Jesus Christ like "Sheldon Cooper in the big bang theory example" brain who can remember so much. :) Even if the Priest sometimes struggle in their studies if it is God's will they will eventually become what God wants them to be. Geusseppe of Copertino was also not a brilliant man, but because he love's God he listen to the promptings of the Holy Spirit. Simple minds and loves so much is the most important virtue for Priest. As for the MASONS, God the Father has a message for them in the 1932 Message of God The Father, given to Mother Eugenia Ravassio. www.fatherspeaks.net/pdf/the_father_speaks_english_v-2005-02.pdf They don't need to fight with the KofC. Masons must come back to God because they are endangering their souls to the enemy. They can't serve two masters.

LOL ... love it. And hey...BLESSED Solanus Casey too! I "kind of" have ties to both St. Andre Bessette and to Blessed Solanus Casey, because I'm in Port Huron, MI, and St. Andre B. was in London, Ontario at least once, and Blessed Solanus C. was in Detroit for much of his priesthood. He had flunked out of the German Catholic seminary in his native Wisconsin, but a voice told him to go to Detroit, and the Capuchin Friary admitted him and trained him for the priesthood. He struggled academically, but was ordained as a priest on condition that he would not have the faculty to hear Confessions. That must have been a great humiliation for him, having to explain to people repeatedly that he couldn't hear their Confessions. Yet he could read souls - oh, and he was known for many miraculous cures. People came from far and wide for his prayers for healing, and if they had to go to Confession first he told them in no uncertain terms. Another tie I have to Blessed Solanus C. is a prayer group leader who was my brother's teacher, and then my daughter's -- Mr. Howard. When Mr. Howard's mom was a little girl, her dad became terminally ill. It must have been the 1930s or thereabouts -- 20s to 40s. He was a farmer in Smiths Creek, with 7 very young children, and the doctors told him to put his affairs in order. Someone who came to pay respects told him of 'this healing priest in Detroit,' so figuring it was worth a shot, he went to see Father Casey. Father Casey was always seeing visitors lined up out the door. Once one of the brothers brought him an ice cream cone on a hot day, but visitors interrupted, and Father Casey put the ice cream cone in his desk drawer. Hours later he finally had a moment's respite to enjoy his ice cream, and as he opened the drawer, the brother said, "It'll be a mess!" But Father Casey pulled out a perfectly cold, solid ice cream cone. It's great to be Catholic! Anyway, Mr. Howard's maternal grandpa went to see him, and all he said was, "Go home." Then, as if an afterthought, he said, "You will help the poor, won't you?" And that began a lifelong partnership with Mr. Howard's grandpa and the Capuchin Soup Kitchen. Father Casey came to help at harvest times (he had grown up on a farm), played base ball with the kids, knew them all by name, had supper with them. One time he noticed one of the girls was missing, and asked to speak with her. She was found hiding under her bed because she had a hole in her sock and she didn't want him to see it. He told her she was going to be a nun, and she is. You don't just walk in and join the convent, this was a real prophecy. Mr. Howard's grandpa went to Father Casey's funeral, and lived to be 83, got to meet his grandchildren and some great-grandchildren. I just love the stories of our Saints!

Ok hear me out. I love good graphic design and I even studied it in college for a while. However, the vatican's website has a distinctive tone to it that makes it obvious that it is from a church in Rome with older people chosing its design. I can obviously tell it is not fake or going to try and sell me something because it is not modern at all. It resembles a small town website and everything on it is straight to the point. So I like it. Now, if you could change it to assist in the readability or somehow make it resemble a Roman Catholic church and keep that vibe of it being obviously the correct webpage because its asthetics have not been overdone by modern design then sure go for it!

I agree with you about the visual aesthetics, but a lot of the web content is built in the styles of the era where we explicitly defined sizes of elements in such a way that makes them a pain to use on the majority of devices in use today. Nice video as always. I definitely agree with you about the Vatican's website and your view on the arts in the church. I'm not sure I agree In regards to less emphasis on theological credentials for bishops. Bishops must safeguard the faith and make sure proper doctrine is being carried out. I think having good training in that area is necessary and makes sense. I think weather Pope, bishop, priest, or laity, If we live out our faith and constantly say "yes to Jesus" than God's will is being carried out (no matter what vocation we are in). It's also possible that being a bishop could have held saints like St. Padre Pio or St. John Bessete back instead of making them more influential. I'm not sure those saints would of had as many interactions with laity if they were bishops. Interesting topic! God bless you Brian and keep up the good work.

Why are people so hung up with newness in web design, what's wrong with some tradition there, too? Good points about bishops and theologians, especially as there's good theology and bad theology and I suspect many of the bishops with lots of letters after their name are full of Nouvelle Theologie.

I personally disagree with the idea we should get rid of all the gold and the material beauty. Gold and marble and precious stones were created by God, and they are good. Why shouldn’t we use them if we get the opportunity to do so?

I agree that clergy should not be predominantly measured by their academic credentials.
@ThePhilosorpheus4 жыл бұрын
My only disagreement is Bishops should know their theology exceedingly well. To guarantee unity of doctrine, and to make sure they´re going to know how to answer questions. Most protestant pastors haven´t studied any theology, and the result is clear, the endless multiplication of misconceptions and misguided biblical interpretation, some which lead to heresy, and that do not do any favor to Christianity

Your point about the bishops is good, but intimate relationship is possessed by all those who in a state of grace consume the body of Christ but not all are Holy. We need Holy bishops, ones who will die for the Church and Jesus Christ without question. We need Bishops that are courageous yet humble. But more than holy bishops, we need Holy Catholic families. Saints on the ground everywhere and everyday missionaries through word and deed.

Regarding your point on the lack of academic qualifications serving as a hindrance to being elevated to senior clergy roles (eg bishop, archbishop etc) is one that needs voicing! You only speak the truth when you say Christ chose simple men with very humble beginnings to act as the first Apostles. Indeed Peter was a fisherman! Whilst we shouldn’t shy away from those who have been gifted from immense intellect, the mistake of disregarding a persons character at the expense of a PhD is a mistake. God Bless and Merry Christmas 😀👍

Of course Bishops can’t marry, because of the vows they took at their ordination, but I’m fairly certain a married man, in theory, could become a bishop. There’s a priest in DC who is married with children because his family converted to Catholicism after they were already a family. It’s just that the odds of a married man becoming bishop are approximately zero. Please correct me if I’m wrong. And whoever said Peter left his wife and kids after Christ called him, that’s absurd. To think God would call you to sever a sacrament and abandon your children in service of Him is to deny the character of God Himself.

How can a married man become a bishop? I thought that was against the church's teachings? Can somebody please explain to me???
@DanUtley6 жыл бұрын
As I noted in my comment, you'd have to be already married when you converted to Catholicism, and then your local bishop has to really believe that you really have a calling to the priesthood to let you go through seminary, and then you get ordained a priest. Once you're a priest, I think the door is open. Maybe I'm wrong. I think the Church WOULDN'T appoint a married man as Bishop, not that it doesn't have the power to, like it doesn't have the power to ordain women.

@@BrianHoldsworth You didnt answer my question. You do not support gender equality.
@BrianHoldsworth4 жыл бұрын
@@robertlight5227 If by equal, you mean that they are the same, then of course I don't because nothing philosophically or scientifically supports that conclusion. If you don't believe they are the same, then it would stand to reason that their abilities (strengths and weaknesses) are also not the same which is why we end up trying to find roles best suited for each as the video argues. I actually do believe that men and women are equal, but I have a principle that reinforces that conclusion: God created us both according to his image and loves us equally. As an atheist, you have to provide some other measurable reason and supporting evidence that fits within your belief that matter is all there is. So, your argument must be based on what can be observed materially and there is nothing in matter that says men and women are measurably equal.
@robertlight52274 жыл бұрын
@@BrianHoldsworth You must first prove by logic and logic that your overt sexism will have positive good. I have seen no logic in your argument yet.
@BrianHoldsworth4 жыл бұрын
@@robertlight5227 No I don't. I just have to show that premises support the conclusion, which I've done. Nothing in the laws of logic say that in order for a conclusion to be valid, you have to demonstrate some moral good will come from it. That's like saying, I won't accept general relativity until you show me how it's going to feed the poor. What!? What grounds do you have talking about objective moral good? Objective morality is an invisible, non-empirical standard that transcends space and time. Atheist materialism is the belief that all matter (ie. everything) is locked in an inevitable sequence of cause and effect. How can you talk about good (what ought to be compared to what is) with that as your starting point? To speak of what ought to be is to say that something outside that sequence exists by which it is judged. Theists can say that because we believe in transcendence (ie. God). I can talk about objective good and not contradict myself. You can't without betraying a massive contradiction. If you're going to be an atheist, you should have the fortitude to accept everything that it implies.

I spent most of the past forty years fighting much the same campaign as you. Things were getting better from about 2000 until 2013, then all the momentum was lost. The dreadful Papal liturgy at Malmö, devised by the Diocesan music directory, set the tone. At my own parish, we spent several weeks learning a Proper in Latin and then did not sing it, as there was not time after the mandatory Lutheran hymn. The Catholic music in Sweden is not undignified; it is Lutheran/Anglican with some Catholic music as tit-bits. The overall effect is incoherent. Light infantry march tunes such as "Tell out my soul" have completely the wrong energy for the start of Mass. The organists work in the North German tradition and tend to blast out, with a bit of infrasound thrown in (the frequencies that make your guts vibrate). Although I had no objection in principle to a Novus Ordo Mass, in practice the music was not recognisably Catholic and we had other aberrations such as communion being distributed by women improperly dressed - spray-on jeans - and the priest just allowed it to go on. In practice, therefore, the only reasonable Mass was the weekly Tridentine. Then the priest got ill and none of the other priests would stand in - requests were met with a flat refusal in a rude tone of voice. That left the question of where to go on a Sunday morning. The only sensible option was the Serbian Orthodox church, a mixed Serbian/Russian congregation. This was providing, reliably, what I had always struggled for in the RC church. So I stayed. I just walked away from the problem and I have felt much better ever since. And as a bonus, the fasting rules got my cholesterol level down so the doctors stopped threatening me with statins! kzbin.info/www/bejne/hJ-qaWibhMR9bJo

I wanted to say that, I do not believe that Pope Francis is doing good to the church, I believe sometimes that he is the anti-pope. And I also wanted to ask people to see this comment, to pray for my great aunt, her name is Margarita Carrera Lopez, today she died, she spent her last days very bad ... I did not have the honor of, spending her last days with her , for my great stupidity, I just wanted to ask you to pray for her, I am 15 years old and she was like my grandmother, when my real grandmother died, at my age of 5, she took care of me and my family. When my parents divorced she gave us home, I spend many nice moments with her, she took me smiles the saddest days, we played a lot ... anyway, I just want to ask a prayer for her, you know his name, we are of Coahuila Mexico, God bless you.
