"Pretty games. No ideas." Oh come on, man. Id Software revolutionized the video game industry in many ways, and several times. Not so much anymore, but in the 90s they were constantly breaking new ground and doing things that everyone else thought was impossible in games at the time. Even 2004s Doom 3 was revolutionary with it's IdTech 4 engine, which introduced many, many things that are totally standard in games now a days. Hell, the entire COD franchise is built upon a modified IdTech engine. Id Software has been MASSIVELY important in the history of video games, for so many reasons. Video games wouldn't even exist as they now do if it wasn't for Id Software. Without them, we'd still have video games of course, but they would be SO inferior and primitive compared to the games made now.

These games are great because they are SIMPLE and STRAIGHT FORWARD. That's a very underrated point that people forgot nowadays. Doom didn't require proper aiming and made you feel unstoppable. Quake did just that but now on multiplayer. Wolfenstein had enphasis on the possibilities of exploration. And so on. Simple and enjoyable gameplay is so damm good, people are faced with the cheapest ideas one could ever come up for a plot, but don't even care.

And miles better than "you're a treasure hunter go shoot some shit and open this vault, also corrupt gun manufacturer and aliens."
@brunocar029 жыл бұрын
FORMINCRAFTIA im not going to say that is not true, the story is miles better, but still, a lot of manufacturers became useless in the late game, the weapon names were improved only because they expanded upon the already decent system in the original, but also made it super repetitive because of that (specially in coop)

ID software didn’t develop Quake 4 and Wolfenstein 2009, you have Raven software to blame for that. Sure they did it on ID engines, like they usually do (Hexen comes to mind), but ID were mainly the engine guys on these projects. As for the whole physics engine argument, ID tech 4 had that and made good use of it, along with a lighting engine that still seems cutting edge when you compare it to the stuff you usually get nowadays. Doom 3 was just a showcase for that. But hey, at least you don’t have to press x to pay respect in ID games.

Just an FYI, both Wolfenstein and Quake 4 were made by Ravensoft, not id. Ravensoft's jumped the shark in their own way. From Heretic, Hexen, Jedi Outcast, Jedi Academy, to meh marvel games and COD DLC. Still not accurate to tie gamed based on id's properties to being made by them. Also... Unreal Tournament? Maybe I missed the joke, but also not made by them. And to top it all off, very few people have seen the new doom so no idea where you're getting the whole physics engine thing as being the big feature from.
@ivanvenne5 жыл бұрын
And the new doom was being made in ID tech 6. For a time it was ID tech 5. I usually like these videos but this one was complete and utter garbage with the lack of effort put into it. Like for example, Doom started off as an Aliens game but didn't because ID wanted full creative freedom. Not to mention Doom 3, made in ID tech 4, also had physics in it.

Wolfenstein was the first to break the barrier of guns and blood. Everyone was afraid to do it, and they did it with high success. Doom was their next big thing to break the barrier and blow the world on it's ass with intense gameplay and gore (at the time). Doom and Quake aged very well in my opinion too. Romero was trying to work on newer things after his "FPS" craze as well, but somewhat to his demise. I could go on and on, but all I'm saying is I feel his work was misrepresented here. Nowadays it's pretty common, but at the time in the videogame industry it was pretty unique. And also... Quake 4 and Wolfenstein '09 were mostly developed by Raven Software so... yeaaa. I get your point that ID nowadays don't release that much original games that excel in the creative department (also they don't release that much games either) and they are mostly known by "that company that every X years do another Doom"... but you could have written a much better video with that material.
