This is great! A late friend of mine, David Rea, cowrote this song. In the 1960s, David was in a studio in NY City with Corky Laing, the drummer for Mountain, who was trying to write this song. Corky asked David if he knew anything about Mississippi. David told me he came up with half of the lyrics of this song, such as the lines about "Way down around Vicksburg, around Louisiana way" and so on. David was also a great acoustic slide player -- one of the best I ever heard in person. In the biography "Shakey," Neil Young called him "far out." David also gave Joni Mitchell lessons in how to play guitar in standard tuning, and she wrote a song about him called, "Play, Little David, Play." This is how David would've played "Mississippi Queen" on acoustic!

David was associated with some great artists: Gordon Lightfoot, Richie Havens, New Riders of the Purple Sage, and on and on. Also, he worked with the (in)famous Felix Pappalardi. I'm fascinated by the lives of these musicians. It might be clichéd to say, but as technology and the internet became more prevalent, we lost a certain authenticity in our lives.

​@@flatsixx Righto! Dave told me a very funny story about Felix Pappalardi that I think is true. Dave and Felix in the mid-1960s were sharing a hotel room in Manhattan while on tour backing Ian & Sylvia. Dave went out to the East Village to "score" a bag of marijuana, which was dangerous stuff to buy back in those days. Dave came back, found the hotel room door locked, knocked, and said, "Hey, it's me -- Dave. Let me in. I got the stuff!" Felix was passed out on the bed, having shot up heroin. David had no idea that Felix was using hard drugs. Felix groggily mumbled, "Dave's not here, man." Dave said, "No, man, it's me -- Dave. Let me in. I got the stuff." "Dave's not here, man." "No, don't you get it? It's me -- Dave -- and I've got the stuff. Come on! Let me in!" "Dave's not here, man." It went on like that for quite a while. A few weeks later, Dave told the "Dave's not here" story to the guitarist in a Canadian band called the Vancouvers, a guitarist who also did standup comedy. The guitarist/comic was Tommy Chong, his standup comedy partner was Cheech Marin, and the "Where's Dave?" routine became their most famous comedy bit. Even I used to do it, and I'm not a funny man. Why do I think this story is true? Because Dave told me so many stories that I thought at first were made-up or exaggerated until I verified them with people who knew and discovered they were true. Dave Rea was that kind of guy.
