Mark Martin qualified 5th in his NASCAR debut - the 1981 Cup Series race at North Wilkesboro with a lineup of NASCAR Legends like Cale Yarborough, Richard Petty, Dale Earnhardt, and more. While he was nervous about starting the race on a wet track, what was the ONE thing he forgot to do that might’ve given him a great finish in that race? He talks to Carla Gebhart and Kelley Earnhardt-Miller about that rookie mistake and more from his Cup debut on this week’s DJD Reloaded.
Then, he compares the advantages and disadvantages that drivers like him and Rusty Wallace had while making their first NASCAR national series starts with those of today’s drivers who are coming up through the ranks. Who has it tougher? Plus, which driver does Mark talk about who almost didn’t have enough time to prove he belonged? Which current drivers does Mark have his eye on?

Mark is the best class act NASCAR has ever had. I miss him on the track, yet I’m glad he is enjoying his retirement.

Based on what ? You know this person ? You know the other drivers -? You know his teammates ? Y'all fanboys need to remember - we don't know these people - you may think you do - but most of the time famous people aren't what they appear - so unless you personally know this dude , your declarations are ridiculous

Mark had to work very hard to get in cup & stay. His first start was in 1981. But, before he got his first win in 1989 he only ran two full time seasons '82 & '88. It wasn't easy back then either.

I’m a huge Mark Martin fan. I got to shake his hand one year at DEI at Dale days or whatever it was called when he was driving for them.

Mark Martin is nothing but class! You have to remember that his first Cup team was a failure, and he went back to ASA for 4 years before Roush gave him his break. I still have his autograph from 1980 when I met him @ La Crosse for an ARTGO race!

Great person and good fast race car driver. He didn't win a championship in the Cup Series but it was not from a lack of trying. He was always in the hunt and that was a credit to his team and his preparation and his values.

I wish Mark would mention in every conversation especially tough times saying I beat Larry Phillips!! Everything else easy stuff. Not many people can say they beat Larry. Love Mark!! Love racing but if he never beat Larry you wouldn’t know him simple as that. Just pay respects Dale jr does the same to Mark

I don't watch nascar anymore because 95% of the drivers are spoiled rich little punks. I quit watching my most favorite sport back in 2015ish & have since switched to Flo and dirt track racing is now my favorite sport. These kids are just so milktoast & entitled. It is quite sad and nascar will NEVER be what it once was until this changes

Soooo, this comment will not be liked, I managed "machining" at Roush Racing during Mark's timeframe, including engine build and engineering. WE machined all the components (hence engine blocks, cylinder heads, intakes, etc., etc.). Assembled them, "dynoed" the engines, and built the cars, and sent to the racetrack. The driver, hence Mark was NEVER onsite, no input, including the "guys" you see in the pits, it was all "done" by the guys back at the shop. Yes, at the track you can make adjustments, but the drivers have little to no input, including the staff at the race track..Yes, requires talent to drive but there are many that never have the opportunity, Ernie Ervin is an example that was a nobody and had the opportunity. There are/were pailful hours, days, weeks spent building these cars, and the "folks" you see at the track have nothing to do with it....Mark, or his "race car" always had the best of everything.

Congrats, you did your job while Mark took care of sponsorship agreements and team business during the week and strapped himself in every weekend. You poor man. You should be proud to have worked with Mark. Your problem is with you and Jack.
