If Side Order Fails

WIth Side Order being just a few days away, I’d been thinking lately “what if the Splatoon 3 expansion we’ve been waiting for since the February 2023 Nintendo Direct end up being an unfinished game”. So today I want to talk about all of the possibilities that could come from the Splatoon community not enjoying side order. WHether it be backlash, people not caring about the new game, or who knows. Maybe Side Order ends up being really good! Thats what we’re talking about.

I’ll be honest I’ve kind of stayed under the rock like i just enjoying playing not really caring if it has its faults because it’s Nintendo they’re not gonna give us perfection ever and it’s fine for me at least cause because I am one of those people who felt the first year was good. I love the game. I mean hey, I’m a casual player and I’m not a critical person. and its honestly so tiering to see everyone being so critical like just get over it 💀

@@goatcheesee a lot of it was good quality of life updates, I have no doubt the splatoon 3s launch was great, but the content really fell off, took more then a year for a single new stamper kit, all the new maps being dog water, reused content in the catalogue. Like all the little things are great additions but in the grand scheme of thins it’s really not enough to be called a sequel. We don’t even have a new ranked mode yet, you gotta admit that’s insane.

God, I hope Side Order doesn't suck ass, and I hope Side Order will save Splatoon 3. Since Splatoon 3 is the last Splatoon game of inklings vs octarians saga, I think Splatoon 4 will have a new, fresh, and unique start with tropical/exotic environments, new species that's related to allies/heroes or foes/villains, more clothing options, playable idols (such as Squid Sisters, Off The Hook, and Deep Cut), new and original story mode that doesn't involve with octarians stealing the zapfish, new idols (and it better a male idol this time, or better, male and female idol falling in love each other), new and original stages, new side modes, customizable weapons, new splatfest-like events, glowy fingertips/toes, unique hairstyles for both inklings and Octolings, unique clothing based off from Splatoon manga/dolls, better online servers, and last but not least, bring back the collaborations for Splatoon 4 (such as amiibo, anime/manga, and indie/AA game franchise collaborations)! God, I hope Nintendo doesn't milk the Splatoon franchise to death like how the other triple AAA companies are doing it.

Now that the DLC is out, I have already beaten it in less than 24 hours and I have to say that I still prefer Octo Expansion Side Order really was just a single mode that while had replayability, was lacking story wise. The fact we waited for it longer than Octo expansion definitely set the bar too high for many people

@@rizironeI already 1000% it so spoilers ahead The story doesnt get much better, and I knew it was gonna be bad (at least for me) when they announced it was gonna be a rougelike. I know rougelikes are supposed to be focused much more on gameplay than on story, but it still feels like a missed opportunity. I like rougelikes when they have minimal lore and are a new game on its own, but Side Order is literally the alternative Splatoon 3. I got so hyped for the first trailer because I thoughtthe flashing images were pretty cool and ominous, and they couldve done a banger story either a campaign style DLC, like a really good successor to the octo expansion, and it makes me really sad that they didnt.

I feel like this wasn’t trying to be as much of a successor but more of a side story to follow up on what’s the latest happening with eight, pearl and marina. It was also the creators trying to experiment with a different level design than usual (rogue lite sort of thing). I would say creating a build and trying to squeeze everything I can from it is also good

you're kind of spitting tbh, a few days ago I criticized on another video that even if side order is good (which i pray it is) nothings going to happen to the main game and everything is still going to be a mess +2 years is not nearly enough to keep this game going with the state its in and i got called "Toxic" just for that by yet another splat-zombie that in a simplified version went "No this games amazing actually you're just wrong."

Personally I disagree as I think it would become better, but of course it would take time! Your reasoning is still very valid as compared to the time frame between the release of Side Order and the supposed end of updates with the time frame between OE and Chaos vs Order, we have less time to actually get these updates, unless they have some major updates planned and/or they extend the update cycle [we can't know for sure what's going behind the scenes tho]. I also don't think it's a mess, but there are some clear problems with it.

They most definitely have to be making a splatoon 4. This game has lack of content, lack of customization, most items and splatfest being JAPANESE EXCLUSIVES. I don’t even want to talk customization because it would just go in a long rant about the customization, I know people want gameplay and story but customizations is HUGE for this game. The whole main reason why I loved splatoon as a kid. But side order has colored finger tips, I know we can’t use it online but still a breath of fresh air for something we can customize.

I'm still so disappointed with this game especially when you look at Splatoon 2's update cycle. Like the core mechanics and changes that set it apart from 2 really gave me hope the updates would be peak. But nope. We didn't even get holiday fests until A FEW MONTHS AGO. Not to mention no ranked, no new hairstyles, no interesting clothes to wear, etc... If they fumble with Side Order I'd actually consider dropping the franchise like how I'm considering dropping Pokemon.

I’d like to think Side Order’s lack of marketing compared to Octo Expansion is because Nintendo has simply become overconfident in the Splatoon IP. Given how this game managed to sell 10 million copies in its first three months, and it racks in more players than Splatoon 2 did at its peak, Nintendo probably doesn’t feel like they need to push the Splatoon experience as hard as they used to like they did in the OE era. Do I agree with this process? No, I think it would have been nice if we got a BIT more non-spoilerish details on the game ahead of its release, but it is what it is. I want to have confidence that Side Order will be an experience to remember, because the DLC is the opportunity for Nintendo to further expand on the game’s world.

As someone who has 1.25K hours in this damn game since day one, yeah, content wise its been a massive drought. We only get a substantial update once every 3 months which is enough for people to realistically only pick it up for a month, then drop it for 2, then pick it up again. My COPE is that once side order comes out they release extra content like they did with octo expansion, but at this point with Switch 2 on the horizon im not sure. I feel like Splat 3 is one of those games that had so much untapped potentially that we will never see and its honestly heartbreaking as a lifetime fan being around since the first ever global testfire in 2015.

i dont feel hopeless for side order. If the devs are putting a $25 tag on it, then it HAS to be worth it. I also have one critique about the expected quality of the story. One, if they did the other stories well, how could they falter? Two, literally none of us know whats going on, and three, im gonna use the "its a kids game" card. Of course the story isn't gonna be super heavy or complex, but it wont be too simple either. I trust the devs know what theyre doing, so seeing people worry over DLC that weve seen rarely any context for (in terms of how itll play out), then thats on them. if the DLC ends up being terrible, we're all capable of telling the devs "hey it sucks" and... sometimes they listen.

i've enjoyed splatoon 3 since launch even through all its rocky history, so side order potentially not being great would just be kind of a big whup for me. i'm honestly not expecting it to be mind-blowing since the main campaign of S3 wasn't exactly the most compelling in terms of level design like OE was (in that many of the levels were very hold-forward with not much substance or reiterations of gimmicks from previous games). i just think it's kinda nice to have something else to mess around with when my matches aren't going well and i need a cool-off. i get it if yall would be pissed tho, it's a lotta cash for the full package for one

I think the main reason I'm close to being one of those "die-hard fans who can barely accept any criticism of the game" is because I have a tendency to unconsciously double-down on my opinions of things if people tell me that they're horrible, e.g. if I say "I enjoy Splatoon 3" and multiple people say "no you don't, Splatoon 3 is objectively the worst Splatoon game and there is nothing fun about it." I will subconsciously start thinking "Splatoon 3 is the best Splatoon game, and there's no changing my mind." That's probably also why I kinda found S2 and OE mid.

I'm a die-hard fan who accepts [sometimes I point them out] criticism about this game, but even though I acknowledge these problems, I don't really like people becoming extremely negative before the release of something. While their reasons are understandable, I feel like we should wait and see, and be cautiously optimistic! As for whayever the best Splatoon game is, honestly, despite its multiple problems [content feels dry due to the poor seasonal distribution instead of it being throughout the season], I still feel like S3 is the best due to the added mechanics and weapons lol ! I like s2 more than s3 but that’s probably because I started with 2 years after they stopped updating it, so it’s probably bias. I stopped playing splatoon 3 three months after launch after I beat the story because I didn’t find the multiplayer fun like 1 and 2 I’m really excited for wave 2 from when I bought it last year let’s hope for the best!

We just need more weapon kits and better maps because a lot of maps are terrible. Maybe some quality of life features would be nice too, like online table turf not being locked behind a pool or making challenges actually having a good system. (SO MANY TEXT) If side order ends up being a rogue like how it's shown, at least it will be a good mode but the bad thing it's that you have to pay for playing it, and honestly I don't think it will give us new content for the game, maybe some new customization but that's all. I see that so many people are hoping that the inkopolis square lobby it's going to be unlockable after completing side order, but listen, I think inkopolis plaza it's in the game because splatoon 1 servers are going to shut down or because splatoon 1 is in a different console, and giving me 2 lobbys that have the same things from splatsville except the characters, it's a fucking scam unless you're a great fan of splatoon. I'm sure side order will be peak still and probably i will be wrong, but we just have to wait and see if this "saves the game"

thing is splatoon 3 is (like splatoon 2 before it) basically just a big balance patch. Nothing groundbreaking or substantial actually changes between any of the games. Legitimately the only new additions that arent just balance style things (like new gear abilities/changes, new specials and subs, etc) is fucking squid roll and squid surge. Take the hud away from S2 and S3 and the games look virtually identical. Splatoon 3 is just splatoon 2 DX, and Splatoon 2 was just Splatoon DX. The game still has a shitty map rotation system instead of just letting you pick what you want, you still can't pick what kit you want to use and have to use nintendo's braindead choices, map design hasn't gotten better and maps have regressed massively over time. We haven't gotten any new modes since clam blitz in 2018, and rainmaker in the year of our lord motherfucking 2015. The game has been the same for well on a decade now. The game is just 2015 splatoon with a fresh coat of paint, nothing sequel of a sequel worthy even exists in splatoon 3. So I think that's why people are bored. It's why I am, at least.

Everything you're saying makes sense, but you're parroting a lot of opinions from the competitive community. I feel like people who play this game casually, even if they dont spend as much time with it, love it a lot more than those who play it competitively.

Hard disagree, but with how it's being managed rn, I get ya. I'm personally not having any problems with it, but I can see them [competitively bad map and kit design, time locked challenges, etc.). I still personally enjoy it tho!

I'll be honest, while the content drought of Splatoon 3 is a problem [it has around the same amount of content at this point in the life cycle, but it wasn't as distributed well], I genuinely don't think we should be negative about its release, and instead mostly focus on the positives [while still acknowledging the problems]. We can of course be skeptical about its quality considering they haven'treally shown as much compared to OE, but I feel like it would be unhealthy to immediately think about what would happen if everything did go wrong.

This will probably never happen, BUT. I hope another Palworld situation happens where a different company makes a game similar to Splatoon while still being legally distinct and offering more than Splatoon compared to its price tag. [RANT WARNING] Nintendo is getting way too complacent with their IPs, as someone who used to play Nintendo stuff all the time, it seems to me that they are milking their games for as much money and engagement as possible while putting in the bare minimum of effort. Because why put effort into making something people WANT when you can make what's easy and proven to work for the 10th time in a row... Released EXCLUSIVELY on hardware YOU (Nintendo) own, on a storefront (Eshop) YOU CONTROL, for a high price (60/70$) that will pretty much NEVER GO ON SALE But hey, keep buying from the billion dollar conglomerate if you want to, just don't complain when nothing changes, you the customer can choose not to buy whenever you want, like I have.

Hot Take, I don't think Palworld will be relevant by the time the next Pokemon comes out. It carries the same energy as Slap City back between the end of Smash 4 DLC and the launch of Ultimate, a game that filled the hole between releases. Once Ult came out everyone forgot about SC. It also comes with the fact that by not being on the switch, Palworld is appealing to a very different audience than Pokemon. Essentially every time and Indie title tries to take on Nintendo they always get rolled over once the next title comes out.

I highly disagree, Palworld has already created memes, fan art & more in barely a month since release and the devs are still working on the game, not to mention community mods already being made. But hey, keep buying Nintendo's merch & games like their past hot garbage, and I'll be over here on Steam enjoying actual good content. (I used to be a Nintendo fan since I was a kid, so don't think I'm some blind hater)

Palworld will likely still be around and I’m not even saying it’s a bad game it isn’t. But I expect that will probably be lost underneath the hype of a new main Pokemon. It’s the trendy flavor of the month Indie Game that everyone is obsessed with last month it was Lethal Company now it’s Palworld and in a few months something else might be something else. And the only ones left playing it will be the ones who really like the game and not because it’s simply trendy.

While Palworld isn't a bad game, it's clearly the trendy game of the month. Lethal Company was that game last year and Pal world is it now. I simply believe that once the hype dies down it won't be challenging Pokemon just like many other companies have tried to do before. As a Die-hard Splatoon fan, tbh I don't really think they're milking it (they literally only do merch in Japan; they would get a lot of money if they sold more merch in the west), but they really need to improve their understanding on how to make an online game and have a good online experience [Nswitch online , while being comparatively cheaper than other console subscription services, doesn't provide much due to disconnections in Splatoon]. When it comes to effort, I feel like they are doing their best [graphics are good and there's barely any bugs, and we can't know for sure what's going on behind the scenes], but the devolpers for Splatoon 3 are newer compared to the experienced Splatoon 2 devs, so I feel like it might be the lack of experience [e.g. bad map design, not so viable kit design, etc. Although I don't mind them], which also needs to be dealth woth ethically. They also do give in a lot of effort when it comes to story campaigns now (S2's Octo Expansion and S3's ROTM has shown that Nintendo can make much more complex and darker stories with Splatoon, and don't forget worldbuilding!), so that's why as a die-hard Splatoon fan, I think Side Order isn't gonna fail! It's just not gonna guarantee better seasonal updates. One other issue I need to acknowledge is the lack of official communication and feedback towards the game. It's honestly mostly one sided, wherin Nintendo gives us news, or fans suggesting something to Nintendo, but not really back and forth. As for another indie IP taking place? I'll be honest, with how much worldbuilding and good story Splatoon's IP has, it's highly unlikely I'll leave it because I love it so much for that despite its flaws. As for gameplay, I would probably try it, and that can also push the devs to make the multiplayer aspect better! As for the video, I think it has a negative [but valid] bias, but personally, I think we shouldn't focus too much on the negatives cuz ngl it feels unhealthy whenever we do it too much, so I think we should focus more on the postive aspects and effects while still acknowledging the problems that must be fixed!

The only "amazing" thing I'm expecting from Side Order is competing it once to unlock Inkopolis Square as a place you can visit. Other than that, Side Order is already a failure to me. One of three things will happen: A: There'll be no rewards, making it pointless to play, 2: It'll be the same rewards you get from Salmon Run and PVP (scales and cash respectively), where even if the drop rates are somehow worse it's still progress on two separate grinds, rendering all other modes redundant, or (worst of all) D: It'll have it's own rewards, adding a third grind to a game already on it's last leg for people who'll give a shit about them.

I'll be honest, you don't really play these for the rewards lmao...you play this for the story and the gameplay the campaign brings! You shouldn't focus too much on the rewards! This isn't a new way to grind stuff, it's a new story that has digital currency as a bonus! The main meat is the story and the rougelike gameplay!

@pls_stap_ -- You can't add rewards to a game and not expect people to want them. I've been playing salmon run an unhealthy amount since launch, and it still took a full year to get just 100 good scales. I expected it to take a while, but that is unacceptable. My next gold banner from the shell out Maine is 2,450 pulls away. At the rate I'm making cash, the servers will be shut down before I ever make it. And i I estimate the Splatfest pull will require a minimum 25 more Splatfests, and we're only guaranteed 5. "Nice bonus" my ass.

"content drought" The game is fucking good and if people just drop it if a single player DLC isnt great then they clearly don't like the game. Its a solid game with an incredible aesthetic and music and the gameplay is solid too, especailly with the addition of squid roll. Nothing NEEDS to be changed except maybe map changes so comp people can stop complaining despite the game being fun regardless of those flaws, except at high level i guess? but most people wont get to that point anyway so. the addition of new music, emotes, weapon kits and maps so consistently is really nice and is just icing to a really fun game.

You're right! 5 emotes and 8 weapon kits every 3 months is exactly how much it should be. It's totally not tiring playing the same 10 maps over and over, or lazy update times, 1 new salmon run map!?!? I'm gonna cream with all the new stuff they've added. Bringing the old maps back!?!? Also we got Big Swig in year 1 im pretty sure. my partner plays ranked all the time and she never complains about the experience, so idk. sorry i just dont agree that we got no content
