Sadly, we've had deaths in the ring - Misawa's death in Japan from a backdrop suplex. Nothing will change even with deaths. Wrestling needs to begin to be treated like an actual sport and have everyone involved (wrestlers, referees, agents, management, etc) change the culture to reflect that. The NFL has this problem. A couple years ago player named Tua Tagovailoa for the Miami Dolphins got pushed backwards and his head hit the ground due to the whiplash. He got up to walk it off but stumbled bad and was shaking his head. It was clear to former players and pundits that he had a concussion some fans were on twitter speculating in real time on twitter but was hard to prove he had one and Tua said he was fine and the Dolphins team doctor either covered up he had one or was incompetent and said it was a "back injury". So they allowed him to keep going. Players arent going to admit they're injured unless they literally cannot continue. Wrestlers have a similar mindset and its hard to tell if something is seriously wrong if they're powering through. It was clear JD was hurting but he audibly said he was okay, he was wrestling as if he was fine, and it was impossible to tell by the eye test he had broken ribs and a punctured lungs so hard to stop the match at that point. Its sorta a grey area. Unless someone collapses, has a visibly broken bone, or is completely out on their feet. its hard to make that call in the moment

Great discussion by the way. I don't have a complete answer here BUT I do have somewhat of a solution to offer. Incentive through SEVERE fines. Some sort of 3rd party commission should exist to watch over this stuff when an injury comes to light. The fine for failing to stop a match AT MINIMUM should be equal to ALL revenue generated for said show PLUS all expenses involved in putting it together. In other words...failure to put safety first should result in a fine so severe that no one in WWE or TKO would be dumb enough to take a risk on it. You CANNOT just say HHH should do this. He's clearly motivated to take certain actions just as the wrestlers in ring are. A third party not paid by WWE, Netflix, TV or otherwise wouldn't care and just have a job to do to satisfy their own bosses. How you make all that work is complex I'm sure...it would probably have to do with having medical records of injured talent forwarded to a commission as part of the job among other things. The bottom line is this doesn't get fixed until you threaten capitalism. You can't just slap on a $5000 fine either because companies do bad things and just pay off petty fines all the time. It has to be absolutely crushing. Screw up at a Saudi show and its 50 million + expenses in fines. You better believe HHH will stop the match or TKO's firing that man.

@@Suspindedwrestling has been around for over a century and injuries happen. Literally on every show, there's bumps and bruises and hopefully everyone gets to walk out the show healthy. I don't think it's necessary to wrestle hurt or keep wrestling mid Injury. But there's also something to be said about a dude who just gets it done and gets the team to the finish line without making a gigantic spectacle of what happened. Just draws attention on shit like that. And if we stop a match for that, what- we're gonna sit here and do that with every match, go through it with a fined tooth comb and wag our fingers at these dudes?? C'mon man, these dudes are pros working for the biggest company ever known to mankind, wrestling- wise.

There’s no way in hell AEW nerds are clutching pearls this hard with their car crash demolition derby ahh in ring style. STFU 😂 JD took his stock to the next mf level for being a trooper.

The ref could've held up the x to stop the match, yes. But JD, despite the scary bump he took wanted to carry on with the match. If he wants to continue, that's his choice and the match goes on. Period.

@pooldead7712yes but they we're not going on this much about the time moxley was knocked out in the ring and then was allowed to be dropped on his head a second time

No. Sometimes in any sport, the sportsman needs to be protected from themselves. Unless they literally can't stand, the vast majority will say they are fine to continue. Someone needs to be on the sideline to say no. And yes, although it's "sports entertainment," these people are still athletes and sportsmen and women.

Dumb wrestlers are why athletic commissions still exist.

I think if the wrestler can continue, which JD definitely did, there’s no issue in continuing the match.

It's not about whether or not they CAN continue; it's about whether or not they SHOULD continue. A wrestler will be on the verge of death and say "nah, I'm good." The doctors should step in and save the wrestler from themselves. JD could've died. We're not talking a torn pec or a pulled muscle or whatnot; this was an organ that was punctured, more specifically a lung. He also had broken ribs, which could've punctured other organs.
