WHAT ABOUT OLIVE SKIN? 👀Olive skin can't just be put under one category, because we need to also look at the intensity between your hair colour, eye colour and skin colour overall. Some olives find they look best in cooler colours, some like the warmer ones too; we all have unique colouring even in that category. Just wanted to bump that up here as many people asked that question, and I'm sorry if you felt that it was overlooked in the video! We assess hair, skin and eye colour all together (when possible e.g. hair loss or similar of course takes hair out of the equation but then we still have skin and eyes left to look at) and so the balance between these 3 are what helps us decide on a palette. And then harmony! I like focusing on that bit rather than the “dark circles and shadows” which definitely does sometimes appear when you wear your less “flattering” colours, but it doesn’t always happen! Sometimes you literally don’t see that kind of stuff when testing. However, you will always be able to notice the presence (or lack) of harmony - are you wearing the colour or is the colour wearing you is the question. 👀 when we wear colours that match our colouring it leaves room for people to notice us too, not just the clothes we wear. Anyway, a final reminder to HAVE FUN! Colour analysis may be highlighted as a way to “look good” but I think it’s far more important to look at it as a tool to help you wear colour and enjoy it! I’d like to look at myself as living proof! I used to shy away from colour in black, white and grey but I feel more confident with my personal style now than ever. Thanks for watching, it means a lot. Signe xx ❤️

I am light olive, light to medium cool brown hair and cool green eyes, but with a bit ocher. I am in between every category that I ever saw. I cannot go light AT ALL (washes me out). I cannot go too deep (makes me feel goth). I am not extremely cool, but still cool is way better than warm on me. I LOOK soft (hair and everything), but I NEED more intense colors for the light olive skin (otherwise I am washed out). But I cannot wear jewel tones, since I am too soft. So, I am MEDIUM in everything...but leaning cool and a bit more intense. :D What category is THAT?

I'm also soft & cool (greying hair that used to be light ash brown). I think when you want to wear a color that isn't maybe in your 'best' colors, you can still wear it, but maybe not next to your face. Like I think anyone can wear black pants or black shoes and you can just be more focused on tops fitting into the best colors palette. The colors of each season and undertone are not always available every year and every season of the year. Sometimes you have to wait for your best color to become trendy, and then when it does, stock up on it! Because when it goes out of trend, it might be years before it appears back in stores!

This is very helpful. I’ve been professionally color typed several times and every consultant has given me a different result. It’s been very confusing as I’ve tried to rebuild my wardrobe (after significant weight loss, I’ve literally had to repurchase everything except shoes and socks). I didn’t want to invest in pricey clothing or jewelry only to find that it doesn’t actually suit me! After watching this video, I can clearly see that the reason my other analysis’ didn’t seem to fit is that the other consultants were primarily focused on whether I was warm or cool toned (seasonal) and I’m neither! I look good in both gold and silver, depending on what clothing I’m wearing and the time of year. (I tend to be paler in winter of course, and my skin takes on a distinctive purple quality when I’m cold, though I get a nice golden glow in the summer when my freckles become more pronounced). Your example makes it pretty evident to me that I am neutral toned and can wear warm leaning colors AND cool leaning colors, as long as they don’t fall too heavily toward any one end of the spectrum. I have warm eyes and cool hair, but not a lot of contrast so soft makes the most sense. Up until now, I have been afraid to branch out and have been purchasing mostly all neutrals as well as cheaper costume jewelry but this explanation has given me the confidence to expand my horizons.❤

This video speaks to me on so many levels! I have always struggled with finding my undertone. I have both green and purple veins, I find both gold and silver suit me. I have also struggled for years with finding my perfect foundation because, as it seems to me, most brands strictly followed undertones' theory and I had an option of either looking yellow, peachy or too rosy. I prefer and usually choose cooler tone lipsticks, but I find warm tone shadows suit me better. I have gravitated towards certain colors naturally and, when shopping, looked for them specifically, but could've never explained why. Whenever I tried wearing black because 'it's the neutral, it's what all of us need in our closet, it goes with everything', I felt so uncomfortable, I looked like I haven't slept in ages and it highlighted everything it didn't need to - when in reality, black should've been the color to 'conceal' imperfections. Same goes for trying any clear, bright color. Following the seasonal chart, I saw myself in both soft autumn and soft summer simply because undertones confuse me and I truly don't see myself in either cool or warm, rather somewhere in between. On the contrary, following the tonal chart, I could've simply chosen soft, and that goes for both warm and cool colors you've presented, which is exactly what is, in my case, correct - I am soft, and that is my primary characteristic. I can wear all colors in the soft family line, whether warm or cool. And it is so freeing to finally be able to put a rest on it and have a proof that what I've been instinctively choosing over years is what actually suits me, and that my instinct was correct - I've been just too strict and tried to adapt to a classification that truly doesn't represent me, my style or my appearance. Thank you, Signe, for this video ❤️

The seasonal concept ALSO includes the characteristics of intensity. Muted or clear, pastell or deep. Those characteristics determine if you can "borrow" from out of your season. And these characteristics become more important for people of colour.

What a thorough explanation with great example photos. I am a cool, deep, clear. Now I know why whenever I buy blush pink or light peach tops they just don't do anything for me. I always end up taking those shirts off and switching to something else. I have dark salt and pepper hair but when I use to dye it the color was a warmer brown. I use to wear warm browns and they looked ok but never good. Now I've found cool browns that make my skin come alive. As for jewelry I go back and forth. Silver or white gold looks better on me but gold jewelry still brings me joy so I wear it when it looks better with the outfit I choose that day.

Thank you for talking about how our colors may change when we let our hair go silver. Most videos I've watched haven't addressed that possibility. I have dark brown eyes, gold tones in my skin (I tan quickly), and my hair used to be a dark brown. Now my hair is almost a silvery blue in some lights. I really feel that some cool deep colors look good on me now. I wear both gold and silver jewelry and both look good. I've felt very confused but your video has helped to clarify things for me.

This was helpful, Ive spent soooo long trying to identify my undertone and it wasn’t making much sense. I don’t really like the colours for my skin undertone. I can also easily wear gold but silver is more striking. I have very clear features and have always gravitated to bright colours. So I think I’ll forget about undertone and think more about my clear bright features when looking at what colours work for me.

I asked for one for my birthday this year and I’m so glad I did. I was struggling with the warm vs cool and none of the vein tests worked for me. Turns out I’m a spring, so warm, but my skin tone is neutral skewing slightly warm when it comes to foundation. Which is why I was struggling to decipher it myself. It’s a good starting point though finally knowing but also received a great lesson in colours and how to match them with different neutrals, beyond just black. ❤ But i agree as well, some contrast and staying away from muted or super pastel colours is better for me 😊

This was pretty helpful. I have been trying to identify my colour season… I can wear gold and silver equally, and confusingly when I look at my wrists, one has quite green veins and the other has blue. My coloring is similar to yours, but have teal green eyes, not blue. (But people assume they are blue…) Realising that they’re not as clear and striking as yours or others has made me look more at contrast. I’m obviously soft and neutral. Going to explore this world of colors now.

This was incredibly helpful, Signe! The standard seasonal system has been so confusing for me. I have dark hair and eyes and pale skin, so identifying myself as a "deep" type was a no-brainer, but I also have an olive undertone, which makes the warm vs. cool question so hard to figure out. I think my skin does lean more cool than warm, but I have a lot of freckles and my hair and eyes both have warm tones in them, so neither deep autumn nor deep winter ever fit quite right. The winter palette had a bunch of shades that felt too icy and/or bright, and the autumn palette had a lot of shades that felt too yellow. I'm realizing now that the "deep" trait is by far my most important, so pretty much any dark color will work, and since the overall balance of my features is pretty neutral, lighter neutral colors will look most harmonious! 🤯And if I look at my closet and the colors I've naturally gravitated towards, it totally lines up. Thank you for explaining all of this in a way that I could finally wrap my mind around!

I love the colors of your taupe and light blue outfit. I have Soft, Cool, Medium to Light coloring, and along with white, these two are some of my favorite colors to wear, together, with white, or separately. I also love light, cool-toned greens and pinks. My Color Me Beautiful analysis 40 years ago was very useful, but I ended up dropping two hues, grays and purples. The grays don’t flatter me, I think, because I have dark gray circles under my eyes that can’t really be “concealed”, and the purples I just found very hard to find and style. For years, I followed the recommendation for silver-toned jewelry, too, but always longed for gold-tone versions. So, I switched to gold-tone jewelry, it doesn’t take up enough visual space to clash with my coloring and I think my undertone is only slightly on the cooler side of neutral anyway. I have both dark gray and some golden brown in my hazel eyes and my natural hair color is a fairly gold-toned bronde (my skin is super-pale). I think a pro color analysis is an excellent starting point for developing a loved, flattering personal color palette, but as you say, it shouldn’t be followed slavishly, “it’s not religion!”

I’m a dominantly Soft type, too, a Soft Summer in the seasonal analysis. Lighter, cooler to neutral tones (tones have a mixture of both white and black, or gray, added), and some tints, suit me best. I can wear some “Soft Autumn” colors, too, they don’t have to be as cool as the coolest Summer colors, because my overall characteristic is Soft, and my undertone is only slightly cool. I just avoid colors that are yellowish, like yellowish greens, orangey reds and all yellows, of course. White, or a Soft (slightly gray) White, is better on me than ivory and taupe is much better than camel beiges.

Interesting information. I have a cool undertone with a slightly yellow overtone and soft grey medium/dark olive eyes with amber specks, which often confused makeup salespeople in the past. They would use warm colors on my face, which looked awful on me. My hair color was a dark cool brown, it’s greying now. I think I’m a cool/soft/deep and medium to slightly deep colors work best. Charcoal grey is one of my best neutrals along with navy blue, soft white, and medium taupe. I think silver jewelry works best, but I can get away with delicate jewelry in light gold. I’m probably some type of summer, however, some soft summer colors look dull on me and others look good like soft peachy/pink.

I am greyhaired with a fair amount of high and low lights naturally. I was born with brown hair but at times it was very blond, especially in the sun. Hi, Signe. I am clear (dark hair, blue eyes, red skin) and muted (eyes and hair with grey undertone - I've always thought about them this way, my eyes can be grey if the sky is grey) at the same time. Interesting! I think if that approach works for you then that’s awesome 🙏🏼😊 I think it’s all about finding an approach that makes sense to you and your unique colouring (and needs of course) 🥰 from what I can see a “shaded soft summer” is what resembles the “soft” type in tonal analysis, maybe secondary deep if you have darker hair or deeper skin. Actually lots of my clients are in between clear and soft - you don’t need to have blonde hair to be a soft, you can have slightly darker hair too. But most importantly you are not as clear as a true clear, you are more, well soft in your appearance 😊 what I love about tonal analysis is that we have lots of flexibility to put together your colour keywords according to your dominant and secondary traits.

This is very interesting and helpful. Thank you. I was a true summer in my youth. It was easy to use the seasonal palette in those years. In my 40s my hair darkened, and my skin thinned. I'm no longer cool but neutral and have higher contrast so it's been confusing to choose the right colors now. Once I saw a color analyst on KZbin say that the important thing is how does a color make our face look when we hold it up to our chin. Did the dark shadows fade away do we look brighter and healthier? Does our face take center stage or does the color draw the attention instead. I've found this to be extremely helpful especially because I do a lot of thrifting and I try things on in the fitting room before I buy.

Thanks for watching and for your comment! Indeed, that’s a super good point 👌🏻 I refer to it as “harmony” in the video, so as you say - is the colour wearing you or are you wearing the colour? Lots of analysts will mention things like dark circles and shadows when you wear less “flattering” colours but these don’t always appear. The harmony bit though always appears so that’s always a super helpful way forward! 🙏🏼

I haven’t finished this discussion but have noticed no mention of hair color. I now wear very different colors since letting my hair go gray. I’m amazed at the difference when I wear a knit cap. I’d like some mention of hair color effect in color analysis (and, if you have covered this, my apologies…I’m a big fan of yours!)

I do cover it when going through the colour types one by one, especially when talking through the cool type! Hair colour can be quite important and it can potentially push you out of your past colour palette if the change is significant. Happens to lots of people when they go grey in particular! We look at eyes, skin and hair colour all together in the analysis 😊🙏🏼

Thank you for this! After 20 years of trying to fit into one of the 12 sub seasons, this makes way more sense! My dominant trait is warm! But I need medium depth colors to harmonize w my olive green eyes, salmon colored lips and auburn hair. I seem to be able to wear muted and saturated colors equally well as long as they are medium value. For example intense medium red looks just as good as muted medium olive green. In your system what type would this be called?

My pleasure! It’s hard to say when I haven’t seen you to be fair, but your palette could easily be a warm/soft/deep combination from your description. Thanks Signe! Is it possible to embrace the neutral palette instead of choosing to lean warm or cool? I tend to look best in true middle-of-the-road colours (for example, a neutral pink blush - and my favourite metal is an older, weathered white gold which has become warmer over time).
@UseLess_dk

For sure! Unless you’re a dominant cool or dominant warm, you’ll find lots of colours of neutral undertone in the other dominant palettes. So that’s also an option, and if you find those are the ones that work best then that’s also a very valid reason for wanting to choose them 🙏🏼🥰

I have always found this so confusing. I had dark auburn hair with black eyebrows and lashes (courtesy of my grandmother). Everyone said I was an autumn because of my hair but my skin is far from “golden”. I’m so freaking pale that I’m practically translucent. Printer paper white is an accurate description but I also have great deal of redness as every emotion shows by blushing bright red. In some lights my irises look black and in others like amber. Now I am going grey and have decided that grey, black, and white can go with anything so I will wear the colours I like.

Olive skin tone can fit under a variety of dominant palettes because it depends on the intensity between eyes, skin and hair colour. We assess your skin tone and undertone for sure but we also look at other factors. Therefore we can't just say all olive skin tones are under the same category 😊

And how to deal with dyed hair? My natural haircolor is ashen blond, I think. Not seen it in ages. I always gravitated towards reds and orange. The times where my hair was more blond people asked me if I was sick. So with my neutral haircolor I would be a 'soft', but with my dyed hair I would be a 'warm' I guess.

It’s hard to say when I haven’t seen you! But many people who have “mixed” or confusing features find that the soft palettes (with the additional secondary palettes to tailor make further) works best in those cases. We talk a lot about how to wear colour according to your features too, so that’s a conversation we would also have. 😊 I doubt there’s nothing significant about your look at all; but it could be that the significant thing is all more blended together for sure. Hope that helps a little! ❤️ I’d advise a colour analysis to be sure though!
