One phrase I heard that always stuck with me was "when anything can happen, it's hard to care when something does." They may sound dumb to someone on the outside, but the reason why people have these debates involving fictional characters and despite the slightest inconsistencies is because they treat these worlds as if they're real. When a world doesn't follow its own rules it makes people apathetic to it. Bringing it back to the comics, when you treat these characters as brands instead of real people you make people feel apathetic towards them. If anyone in a suit with a web pattern that shoots webs and crawls on walls is Spider-Man then why do we care about them? What makes an individual spider-person interesting when there's a bunch others that are interchangeable with them?
@LordTyph3 жыл бұрын
Honestly, a multiverse idea with Spider-Man can work. Just keep those distinct ideals and traits that Spider-Man has and see how they could fit in another universe, what sort of person could fight with those ideals in mind, how that world is affected by them. Take it slow and show how different adventures happen. If nothing else, just make it an Elseworlds-type affair, where it's not canon to the main universe and have it be an experimental grounds.

Stuff like Gundam and Jojo show that there is an art to making AUs or even just alternate stories in the same continuity. AUs have been a huge part of why Gundam was able to survive so long (it was getting burnt out in the 90s and kept sustained with AUs giving it a fresh feel, the success of SEED and 00 in the 2000s breathed new life into it, and it wasn't until the financial success of Unicorn that UC was able to get put back onto the main stage), and Jojo is a case where the author is talented enough that he can elegantly finish telling one character's story and move on to a new one with a completely different vibe but retaining the parts of the franchise that are iconic. They need to boil down what exactly are the key features of the original IP that they want to make a spinoff is. Say for instance with Spider-Man. "A normal person, fairly young, in a metropolitan area, gets the power of an arachnid." These are what you would isolate as some of the more superficial qualities. The central theme of Spider-Man is "With great power comes great responsibility." Any spinoff should retain that theme. Next, the justification. Why are we making a different story instead of simply telling a new story with the exact same character? "I want them to look different" is not a justification, but it can even be as simple as "I don't want the albatross of existing continuity on top of this." However, the most clear reason to do it is if you want to change the setting, change the abilities of the character, or go with a different tone. Spider-Man has the tokusatsu Supaidahman, the sci-fi 2099 and the noir version, for instance. They are still Spider-Man, but they feel justified as spinoffs because they do something completely different that you would not be able to do in the main continuity.

As much as I may like some alternate versions going the route of the multiverse is the beginning of the end. Maybe not in the beginning it may actually have it’s hits but the inevitable conclusion is always a warping of the character to the point where the character has so many versions and interpretations it’s undefinable.

You made some damn good points about how American comic book characters are becoming more of a dime a dozen than manga characters. The similarities between Peter Parker and Peter Dark-, er, Miles Morales is proof of that.
@stephensmith78113 жыл бұрын
I’ve made a similar comment before, but there’s nothing wrong with “a different universe” conceptually. It allows for creative liberties to be taken for a character that can’t be done in the mainline universe, what if x happened instead of y, what if this guy had a more aggressive approach. The problem lies entirely in poor execution, they just doing a bad job in the comics and an aight job in the movies, although I stand by Tony stark being a great character and Spider-Man being solid especially with the advent of the 3rd movie. In addition, while I don’t really care about miles in the comics, into the spiderverse miles is a fantastic character. He’s more than just Pete with a fade, he’s Miles Morales. He’s still had that Spider-Man framework, but that’s necessary to be Spider-Man, he’s a Spider-Man in a different setting, Influenced by different people, and thus is a different person.

I agree. (ITSV) Miles is a completely different person. yeah, while Both he and Peter are cocky, and good-natured, and have the same power set, that's where they diverge. they grew up in different areas (Brooklyn vs. queens) have different interests -- miles is an artist, and music enthusiast, while Peter had/has always been a science guy. they have different upbringings, and yeah, the prowler scene is pretty similar to uncle ben's death, it's a refreshing, completely different spin on the character. rather than his perfect uncle being killed in an act of accidental violence, Miles' uncle is a criminal killed by an act of brutality from his superior, Kingpin. I'd argue he's a completely different character than spider-man, as he takes up the name, and dons the suit only after realizing that he has the same powers as his universe's spider-man, and is influenced by the other spider-people. I also think ghost spider differentiates enough as well.

Great observations Eric. A couple of my own thoughts: I'm of the view that all this alternative B.S.. actually enforces the legitimacy of the true stories. The word 'alternative' is the thing. An alternative is something different, aye. But in order to be an alternative universe, they need to have a primary canon from which to diverge. When Jay Jay Abrahams came along with his Star Trek movies starring Chris Pine and all that I can enjoy something like that for it's own sake, but as a reboot, reimagining, or explicitly an alternative universe, it has no real validity without the OG Star Trek to validate it. It's those characters and their story development that matters, not thesw copies. That's also why they need someone like Leonard Nimoy to come in as Spock and validate them. They know they don't mean anything, they know they're only an 'alternative', so they need to wheel in the real Mister Spock to give them any kind of legitimacy. They can't stand up on their own and they know it. Also, in terms of comic books or maybe more broadly reboot continuity, again you ever notice how rare it is a reboot survives without being itself rebooted again? Very few have the lasting impact of an OG continuity. Superman and Batman might have had some goofy stuff in their Silver Age, but the simple truth is all that stuff was a singular crazy continuity for like 50-60 years before D.C. did they universe reboot thing, but how long did the reboot continuity last before being rebooted with New 42? And how long did New 42 last before being rebooted again? And at the end of the day none of those things has a validation over the OG continuity, because in the mass public mind everything will always be remembered as that OG continuity. Batman '89 was a successful reimagining in itself, but it was a dead continuity only three sequels later by the time '97's Batman & Robin rolled around and killed that version of the franchise. But everyone knows OG 1930s Batman because everyone knows the basics of his backstory, and that's all OG continuity baby. So yeah. I think all these people so hell bent on saying these things can be alternate universes. Sure, go ahead, tell your story, but it'll always be a footnote to the OG and there ain't no denying it.

Look I enjoyed Into the Spider-Verse for the most part but I don’t care about the sequel. In the MCU They got Tobey, Andrew and Tom’s Spider-Man in one movie! That’s something I’ve wanted since Civil War. They gave me what I wanted. So I don’t care what multiverse/Spiderverse things Sony has in store.
@FOF2753 жыл бұрын
As much as I've loved phase 4 of the MCU, I've also been concerned the multiverse will end up cheapening everything and it becomes like a high budget Rick and Morty. If someone dies, a place gets destroyed, or something else big happens, they can just retcon it with another universe's version of that and continue on like nothing happened and that'd keep future stories from having any weight compared to the first 3 phases

On the one hand, I like the idea of the Halloween movies being different continuities, as if they are all campfire tales being told with each person telling their own interpretation of the story. On the other hand, it can be a very lazy way of telling a story where nothing has any consequence.

Tired of the "multiverse" crap! Just cheapens the story and characters, makes things complicated and feels like fanfic. Which is another reason why I prefer manga and anime, since it doesn't has this. Once the story is done; its done. Makes the whole thing more memorable in the long run and is easier for new people to get into it.

This started in the 90's with the artists. Todd McFarlane's version of spiderman was very different then the classic marvel look that had been used for years and years. Back in the old days a new artist on a book had to draw in the style of the book. That went away with the 90s McFarlane Jim Lee Liefeld era of comic books where it became about show boating ones own art style instead of making art in line with the established look.

@reidmason25513 жыл бұрын
House styles died out much earlier than that. Carmine Infantino broke away from the Bob Kane studio style of drawing Batman, and everyone who followed had their own visual spin on the character from that point on. What made McFarlane's Spider-Man stand out was the publicity he got, a publicity that wouldn't have existed without the breakout fame of guys like Frank Miller and Alan Moore. The circumstances weren't the same as before.

I would disagree with you Rippa, on Miles Morales. Miles and Peter *do* have similar circumstances which led to them getting their powers. However, there are differences; Peter got his powers from a *irradiated* spider while Miles got his powers from a *genetically-altered* spider. Peter when he first got his powers, he was curious and excited and used them to make money and gain popularity. It wasn't until the death of Uncle Ben, he decides to use his powers for the greater good. Miles when he got his powers, he didn't want to have nothing to do with them. It wasn't until the death OG Ultimate Spider-Man he stepped into that role (not a mantle) of being a hero for the greater good. I believe if the writers had fleshed out Miles more and given him really good storylines his own comics would sell as much as Peter's comics.

I think what most of the people who've bowed out have realized other than the supposed "creators" are actually devoid of creativity and/or are just lazy is that this shit, these changes, they only go in one direction. Iconic characters sacrificed in the name of "diversity" which, let's be honest, just means "not a straight white guy" at this point. It's all just agenda now and when you start with agenda you get characters that people hate because it's just a platform to preach about whatever supposed injustice is hot at that moment.

There were multiple different cartoon Spider-Man shows by multiple different studios. They can't legally make them a continuation of another studio's storyline, or even a straight adaptation of the comic book which is why we get shows "loosely based upon" the comic book. Cartoon, and also movie writers want to write a story of their own towards a certain audience, that may be of a different audience (or same demographic in a different decade) to someone else's story, not simply to adapt an existing a story by someone else.

Imho I don’t have a problem with the alternate universe concept, as it can be very unique to explore what if scenarios and different takes on popular characters but the problem is the execution when it’s used to cheapen the effect of major events by completely rewriting continuity especially when you have hundreds of “universal threat” storylines each year. Then it’s also a fact it’s used not to work on new characters, new settings, and new stories(IE tokenization).
