Nice job on the recovery at 10:12 in the video you are pulling on the the tow hitch. That could be very risky, axle hooks should have been used. A tow hitch isn't designed for those types of pulling forces.

Definitely this. Such an inexpensive tool to have when you consider how much safer it is. A snatch strap is a big no no on a hitch but a static pull can turn just as catastrophic. It’s pretty absurd, of all people, they are the ones using the damn ball as a recovery point 🤦‍♂️

Let me start by saying that I love your Channel. Been a subscriber for a while now. I used to be in Towing and Recovery and just one word of caution that may save someone an injury or worse in the future. When you had the yellow tow hook attached to the ball on the hitch you have the back or (the bend) facing you. If anything was to ever fail as in the cable, hook or hitch that tension on the cable is going to swing that hook directly towards the bend side of the hook. Which means it would have come directly towards you. Try to always attach the hook in a way that if it ever comes undone it will swing towards the ground or at least away from any property or people. Good luck and keep the recoveries coming.

Yes!! Sometimes, watching them get so close to the chains or cable when they're hooked like that, I cringe. Two of my dad's friends were killed from incorrectly hooking up and the chain + cable. Then being destroyed in one good pull. I know they are professionals but so were our guys. One small mistake cost them.

@@alyr7443Eh, I get what you’re saying but there’s a HUGE difference between winching off the ball like they did here, and a running start type of scenario where the recovery pull happens with another vehicle taking a run at it and hitting the ball with thousands of pounds of brute force in an instant. I do agree that a “do as I say, not as I do” moment would have been appropriate. Just an fyi for those in the audience who arent familiar with this on a practical level that they’re professionals and rigging this way can be dangerous so don’t try this at home.

I'm glad the tow ball didn't turn into a cannon ball. Ronny Dahl (4-Wheeling in Western Australia) has an impressive video demonstrating how to kill manikins with a tow ball recovery (hilarious). Better to use a hitch recovery insert that doesn't rely on a bolt being bent at right angles to its normal load. Glad it worked out without any ballistic interlude.

I work there as a welder. You'll likely break the bolts or your chain before you break the welds on the hitch. They are made for towing within the ratings of the vehicle, not going "YeeYee" and being dumb. Also, I've done exactly that and the hitch held up.

As a general rule, Yes, tow hitches are not for recovery.... But that's because too many weekend warriors are using snatch straps or kinetic ropes. those produce "shock load" yes, even the kinetic recovery ropes... This recovery was with a slow & steady winch line that provides a static load... no shock... the only way a receiver hitch should be used with a kinetic rope is by using a SOLID receiver, specifically for recovery. regular slide in receivers are hollow square tubing & are not designed for those types of loads. NEVER use a ball hitch, especially a drop hitch. This was not an ideal example using the ball, to show the public, but it wasn't a tough recovery & it was a slow steady winch pull... different forces & much more controlled.. no shock load. Pass

Hmmm?! Winching off the towing ball on the hitch. Didn't I see many many recovery experts say that it was dangerous and to never use the tow ball as a stress point. People have died from the ball and hitch failing and flying back like a lethal projectile. Just noticing and questioning. Glad it worked this time and no one was injured or killed!

I think that is primarily an issue if you are using the dynamic ropes. (Yankum and stuff).

Maybe because this was a beyond simple recovery and they know that. The truck stopped there for a reason and it's obvious it wasn't going any further. That truck weights maybe 5,000lbs and the towing capacity is 13,000lbs. Do I need to say the obvious? Probably.... if the tow ball can handle towing 13,000lbs, pretty sure it can handle dragging that truck up a slight embankment.

​@marcuslinton310 what's obvious Is you don't understand physics. First the truck is heavier than 5k. Then add the fact they dragging it sideways. That adds potential energy. Those balls are rated for weight downward not sideways. 13k rating doesn't apply at all. The shear strength of the ball is far less than the tow rating. What if the hook comes off the ball? Then hook goes flying and the truck drops back down. Why risk any of that. Putting in a recovery hitch takes 2 seconds and they're rated for that kind of load. And if that happens and someone gets hurt. The lawsuit potential is there since they were using proper rigging. So yeah there's more to it then what it appears. The forces being applied are not be taken lightly

Not sure I'd have ever used whatever your hook was on the ball hitch of the truck, I'd have used a D ring off of the hitch. Seems unsafe with opportunity for that to come flying off the ball under tension. At least the truck recovery turned out well.

I learned from another KZbin channel that one should never pull a rig from the ball joint because it can only take so much load. I saw In a video test the ball joint ripped off from the long adapter that goes in the hitch and also the pin sheered off and then the ball joint hitting a tree behind the truck with so much force which can kill someone.

@@marcuslinton310 As long as the hitch was installed correctly. Anything can happen and to hook to the hitch is just a silly professional move. 99% of the time it is fine, but why take any chance. Hooking to frame, axles, or control arms would be a better play.

In that scenario it looks possible using the hitch, Since they are not doing a kinetic recovery...that's where you need a solid recovery point. The hitch is probably rated for 7500 lbs trailers and using it to pull the truck backwards is not applying that much stress.

Dave one thing to remember is never I repeat never put the winch line to the hitch ball you can put a rim sling through the wheel cause they are engineered to be pulled from cause the ball is either rated from 3500 pounds to 12000 pounds cause it could shear off

Dave what would I do different? Well let’s me see, not bringing 11 vehicles and 14 people. Too many distractions. Not pulling on a tow ball. A single line wrecker needs a double leg adjustable chain bridle. Snatch block off the highest biggest tree, hook to the two transport points front and rear of tires on a GM truck frame. Wrap towels or moving blankets around chain bridle. Start truck, turn wheels hard right, neutral, and medium park brake. Cut all snags and sticks. Pull onto roadway in one winching. That’s what I would do differently. A single line wrecker with scotch blocks, 150’ of cable, and 4 snatch blocks and I’ll recover the world.

I always wondered why not make sleds of HDPE (that stuff on bottom of airboat) to help with sideways pulls or broken machines. It could be heated to make a semicircle, so the leading edge does not get caught on pulls, less likely to cause further harm to machine being pulled and less resistance on lines and winch.

For stuff like this, it's would be good to have some kind of electric rig that would attach itself to the to be rescued machine (grabbing by the tires) and then use articulation to rescue itself out. Some form of exoskeleton with tracks that's adjustable to any size of vehicle within a certain range.

[For the Tow] I'm no expert, but I would have done 2 things. 1) tether the back of the truck to a tree adjacent, to keep it from slipping more. 2) use the tow winch, loop it off a pulley on a tree adjacent to the front of the truck, then hook up the front left wheel to a K-strap. again, I'm not an expert. I have no clue if that would damage an axle or anything of that nature

Just a plug but back in 2004 has a tow truck driver I took the wreck Masters course, out of Texas in British Columbia Canada for a 2345 level certification in recovery . I was certified until 2009 as a wreck master

I sooooooo wish that you guys were slightly more available time wise. I would LOVE to see you actually set up scenarios and ask those "armchair quarterbacks" what they would do in this situation. Then use some of those ideas and see just how horribly most of them end up. I know that is something that is really just a good thought but not something that can happen in reality but MAN it would be fun to see so many dumb ideas fail!! Sorry I just get really tired of all the know it all people in the comments. Great work on the recovery guys!!!

He's the one that asked tell us what we're doing wrong, pulling from a tow ball is not a safe way to pull and with the hook on it could of shot right off and killed somebody just saying.

10:18 when you have the hook attached to the ball on the guys hitch. Dont do that. Go right to the frame if you can or get a receiver mount with a heavy duty shackle in it. Those balls aren’t designed for lateral loading. They snap right off usually

one thing I would say if tou pull from a hitch ball put a heavy blanket or pvc pipe around cable incase it decides to let go a guy died last year for a hitch ball recovery atleast blanket or pvc pipe will lessen the force if something breaks or let's go
