FYI, the GM service manual says to replace the seals on the oil lines every time they are disconnected. Also, you have to be VERY careful to avoid putting a kink in the oil lines. They are poly and will be ruined if you bend them too much. I personally don’t put enough miles on my oil to worry about getting the last drop out of the lines. Also, my LS7 heads had 16,200miles on them and according to Lingenfelter, all of my exhaust valve guides were worn beyond the factory service limit! Just take your heads to a HIGHLY reputable machine shop that ROUTINELY does LS7 valve jobs and you’ll be good! In the DFW area, I’d personally recommend HPR in McKinney, TX.

I want as much of the oil out as possible; how it's accomplished without removing the lines. 1. Drive onto the lift, raise and remove both drain plugs. 2. Turn off shop lights and close doors. 3. In the morning, lower the car and pour half a quart of oil into the dry sump tank, then wait until the oil stops dripping. Install drain plugs, install pre-filled oil filter, then fill the Lingenfelter modified 11-quart dry sump tank.

The oil change procedure per GM does not specify removing the two dry sump hoses. I have a 2012 Grand Sport with manual. Every time I remove BOTH drain plugs and refill with oil, the car's taken 10.5 quarts, so that seems to be right on the money. I use Mobil 1 5W-30 with the Mobil 1 oil filter; my car has 52K miles...

Same here. Got a 2013 GS 6spd and every oil change I don’t bother to remove the lines and drain them and I always get the proper oil level with 10.5 quarts. Also, I have 2 aftermarket oil coolers in each fender well and I’m sure there’s a quart in there between the 2 that don’t drain out but I’ll just live with it 😂

I did the valve springs on my LS6 this year, heads on the car, in a drive way, with a $70 amazon tool. It's the exact same procedure for the LS7. The biggest PITA of the job was pulling out the steering rack to gain access to the crank pulley in order to turn the engine by hand to bring each cylinder to TDC. I went with a COMP higher lift spring kit with everything in the box for a complete over haul. Revs to redline smooth as silk now.

10 1/2 years and nearly 125,000 miles. So far, the valves are holding out. Been on the track, too. Apparently, early in 2011, Linamar started doing 100% inspection of guide dimensions. So far, no engine related issues at all. Negligible oil usage between 8500-10K changes. Been using Amsoil since 1,000 miles.

@@jamesw.6931 Some interesting information. This is from the Ruthless Pursuit of Power on the situation; "GM Recognizes the Problem In mid-2012, official GM, finally, acknowledged the LS7 valve guide wear controversy. According to public statements made by GM engineers at the "Corvettes at Carlisle" event that summer and content posted on forum sites by Chevrolet Customer Service on 11 October 2012, the condition affected engines in "...some 2008-2011 Z06es." and was discovered during an investigation into warranty claims involving cylinder heads. The volume of problems with heads spiked from "...practically zero to 6.5 problems per 1000 engines." Chevrolet Senior Customer Relationship Specialist, Evan Sawaya, said in web forum posts, "Through inspection of returned heads, it was determined that a machining error in the valve guide had occurred at our head supplier." According to Sawaya, the most common customer complaint with engines having heads with worn guides due to this "...machining error..." is excessive valve noise. GM stated that the problem was solved in February of 2011 and the solution verified with inspection of 100% of cylinder head production. In any warranty return head with badly worn guides, much less one on an engine which experienced catastrophic failure, evidence of improper valve guide machining might be hard to obtain. It would be difficult to quantify original guide diameter or the relationship of the www.corvetteactioncenter.com/specs/c6/corvette-ls7-engine/ls7-engine21.html Page 1 of 9 Ruthless Pursuit of Power: The Mystique of the C6 Corvette LS7 Engine -original centerline of a worn guide to the centerline of its valve seat, so-how did GM arrive at a "machining error" as the probable cause? We believe it possible that the suppler, Linamar Corporation, determined the cause though an internal investigation, then advised GM of its findings. It is, also, possible that GM could document the problem in warranty return heads which sustained modest rather than severe guide wear. It also could have documented the problem by inspecting replacement heads on the shelves at GM Parts warehouses." Mine is a 2013. So I'm hopeful my heads were made after Feb 2011.

9:20 EMI is from copper plugs like the NGK tr6 that everyone uses once they go big power. If you switch back to the irridium plugs like in the ZR1, the service charging system errors go away. Saw this first hand with my blower C6 a long time ago. Pulled the TR6 plugs in favor of the stock ZR1 irridium plugs and no more errors. Nobody thinks of this, but it was so simple.

This dry sump draining thing boggles my mind. I have never seen any documentation anywhere. (Including GM) talking about pulling the lines. It’s gravity fed, so the tank should drain down to the pan (hence why GM says to get the car to 175* oil temps then shut it off for 5 min to check the oil properly. If this is really a thing, this is a new theory to me for sure

It has 55000 km now and GM said my car was not effected by the valve guide issue. Pulled the heads off myself, and they are perfect, just like GM said they would be. It doesn't make sense that GM would say some are bad, and some aren't, if that wasn't the case. So, IMHO I think if GM says yours aren't effected then they aren't. If GM says they are bad then you better get that fixed. I have never tracked my car, but I do drive it hard. I mean red line all the time, almost every time I take it out, after the oil temp is up. I think giving it too much gas at low RPM is very hard on these engines. If I do ever track it I will definitely get the oil tank with the goiter attachment since mine came without. Super fun car!!! This is ridiculous. The crank and rods are separated by an oil film, not a coating. If the coating did wear away and do any damage, it would be very obvious by looking at the bearings. But that's not where these engines fail. It is always the valves guides.

I sucked a valve right at 50k miles and Chevy covered it...thank goodness. They must have detuned it because it didn't run nearly as well as before the valve so I went and had the top-end done with a nice cam (a clip on my channel), 385, tune etc. It was incredible but a pain in the ass dodging smog every 2 years and constant niggling problems so after 12 really fun years I sold her. When your LS7 heads are rebuilt, do not rebuild them with hollow stem ex valves. Period. The guide wear issue is not why they drop valves. People have reported dropping hollow stem ex valves even in rebuilt heads. Use the valves with the strongest stems. I've disassembled 2 sets of LS7 heads, one set with 15k miles and the other with 38k miles. The wear on the intake guides I measured (I'm a machinist) was far greater than the ex guide wear, and some intakes guides were very sloppy, even in the 15k mile heads. Later manufacture Ti intake valves have an extra micropolishing process run on the stems, as they believe that the rougher finish on earlier Ti valve stems was accelerating wear compared to the ex valve guide wear. Still, I've yet to see a report of a Ti intake valve failure even though their valve guides wear more. There were 2 manufacturing issues found in brand new heads back in the 20 teens as delivered by the contractor that supplied the assmblies to GM. One was eccentricity of the valve seats to the valve guide bores. This results in the valve flexing sideways every time it closes, and that in turn creates a side load on the stems which accelerates guide wear. Another issue found with the assemblies is the location of the rocker stand mount hole vaied by .050", exactly, some being one distance from the guide bore, and others being exactly .050" different. This would result in the variation in how the rocker tips sweep the stem tips (or lash caps) when the valve is in motion. If not optimized, at worst, there can be accelerated rocker tip and valve tip wear, at the least, there could be excessive side loading of the stem (and guide), again, accelerating wear and, once the guide bore ovals, increased bending of the valve when it closes as effectively there would be greated eccentricity between the stem and valve seat. Also the N/A vs FI argument re: cylinder wall thickness has one glaring flaw; an N/A engine with a crank output of X has roughly the same cylinder pressures as an FI engine making X. The means by which that cylinder pressure is achieved is different, but to achieve the same output, roughly the same amount of fuel is burnt, and to maintain stoichiometry, roughly the same cylinder pressures are required. The FI engines produce slightly more power before it is sacrificed to the device compressing the intake charge, but that's only a few percent of the crank output when we're comparing FI engines with the same output NA engines.

So I am reading elsewhere from some corvette ppl that the issue has to do with the titanium valves themselves due to the way they wear, not heads. So the issue could be present in an aftermarket head, with the same kind of valves. This vid indicates it's the heads. Which is it? Serious question as it's a lot cheaper to replace valves.

C6's...Z06's especially...are demanding SO MUCH MORE than a stock C5 that you can make an ABSOLUTE MONSTER using a fraction of the $ you'd spend on a C6 Z06. It looks SO MUCH BETTER than a C5 in my opinion though. I'd still go C5 with another 200+ usable horsepowercfor the same $. I think they're the best deal right now for building a SERIOUSLY FAST Vette on a budget. Both are great deals and I think they're a good investment. They'll be going up soon. If you're going to get either, now's the time.

I love these things but curious … what do you think of the gearing? After your last video I test drove a c6 427 (I’m a convertible guy) to replace my c7 stingray, and the super tall gearing absolutely killed me. Couldn’t get to the top of 2nd on any of the back roads near me. All I wanted was to hear that 7L v8 hit redline and it was near impossible! Curious - does it bother you? I ended up sticking with my c7 because despite the less exciting engine, the gears are way way shorter and that made it a little more fun for me

Hey Jakub, thank you for posting the video. I'm currently in the market for a C6 Z06 and am trying to figure out whether to completely stay away from any that haven't had their heads done. Savagegeese made an amazing video on this car in which they've also brought up the issue with the GM engineers they interviewed. According to them, all of the wrongly machined valve guides were subsequently assigned to a certain batch of bad heads relatively early during the C6 Z06 lifecycle (end of 2006? 2007? They didn't specify this unfortunately). They also claimed to never have actually seen cases of dropped valve heads. Have Nigel or Dave mentioned anything about affected model years? Do I correctly assume that all Z06s built 2008 or later are fine?
@itsreallyjakub
