Nice puzzle. There is a big difference between solving these in actual play when you do not know there is a solution versus KNOWING there is a solution.

Douglas, I wish I could plaster your comment all over chess message boards. You are so right, and that's one of the main reasons why people have puzzle ratings that are way above their playing strength. The next lesson mini-series that I am going put out on the channel is on tactical awareness where I will teach players what conditions need to be met so an alarm goes off in their head to say "Hey, now is the time to treat this like puzzle, and start looking for tactics". If you know these conditions, you are much more likely to be able to catch these kinds of tactics in a real game. Thanks for the comment.

Simple. After 1. Kf2 f3 2. Kf1 Black is forced to move and White converts his pawn into a queen before Black.
@Together4.4MАй бұрын
0:58 I knew that was a poisoned pawn because the white king had to stay on the f2 and f1 squares the stop the black king from escaping

Absolutely, thanks for watching.

This fucking video made me laugh out loud. You have done what most chess instruction videos don't do... educate and entertain with a good laugh. Bravo my friend, bravo!!! By the way I got the puzzle right, although it took me a few minutes. As I could see there was A zugzwang situation and taking the pawn would just allow the black king to get out of the way and promote his pawn. I have given you a follow my dear dude.

Haha, thanks so much for the comment Alex! Yes, those are my 2 main goals with this channel: Help others and hopefully spice it up with some humor and entertainment. Good job on the puzzle.

Figured it out, never measures my elo. Also you could move to h8 then when black queens, qa1+

Great instructional exercise. This should also help newer players to appreciate forcing your opponent into bad moves. 👍

Not played since 2016, but it's nice to know I still can. I still had to double check that White would win the pawn race, though - but I wasn't quite sure whether there was some subtle trap that I couldn't see, depending upon whether Black chose 3 ... b5 or 3 ... d5. Cheers :)
@chesswithcoachmarkАй бұрын
Excellent, welcome back to this awesome game! Yes, it doesn't matter which pawn black pushes, since white will be able to mate on any square on the diagonal after promotion. Of course mate on d1 also works if black pushes the d pawn. Thanks for watching.

An easy but interesting puzzle.
@ehsnilsАй бұрын
I think that this one was pretty obvious though.
@chesswithcoachmarkАй бұрын
Definitely could be for many players. This puzzle is rated right at 1500 and I think most players understand their puzzle rating is usually 400-700 points higher than their playing elo although it's not terribly uncommon for players to have puzzle ratings that are more than 1000 above their playing elo. So players around the 1000 level should have a very good shot at this one. Thanks for watching!
@jsmariani41807 күн бұрын
This one was easy, yet I doubt I am a 1000 rated player (I only do puzzles).
@chesswithcoachmark6 күн бұрын
Hey JS, thanks so much for watching. I'm sure you could be 1000 if you decided to consistently play. If you only do puzzles, that is a great exercise for the mind for sure. I love doing Sudoku puzzles. How about you?
@timtrowbridge6787Ай бұрын
Actually, the final move should be Q d1
@chesswithcoachmarkАй бұрын
Yep, Qd5 or Qd1 is mate. Thanks for watching!

I solved it and I'm 650 😢
@chesswithcoachmarkАй бұрын
Yes sir!
@randylplampin1326Ай бұрын
If your rating is 650 then what that means is that on average you lose 20 percent of your games to someone that does not know how to play chess. There is no such thing as a rating below 800. Purchase the monograph on the ELO rating system from the USCF and you will see this for yourself.

Its always funny, when not german try to say "Zugzwang" 😂
@chesswithcoachmarkАй бұрын
Oh yeah, I probably butchered it to ha. It's probably more of a "Zoogsvan" pronunciation.
@JoEisenhartАй бұрын
i think, the problem is the z. Or both of them. Its a quite sharp sound in german. Ab little like ts. But not exactly. tsoog-tswang perhaps... With the t not really to hear, and the s very sharp... the g at the end is clearly to hear. I dont know, this german z is not usual in english. And in a lot of other languages too. Streichholzschächtelchen ( a little box for matches) is another funny word. My friend from Wales, has lived half his life in germany, but if he tries to say, we both lay on the floor laughing. By the way, nice puzzle. I got it.
@chesswithcoachmarkАй бұрын
Nice. Yeah, you're probably right. The whole "ts" thing is something I have absolutely no shot at consistently getting right ha.

Awesome! This puzzle is rated right at 1500 so if you solved this as a 200 elo player, you are well on your way my friend.

You rushed right into the explanation... It was like hey guys I'm going to be sharing some puzzles with you today and you can't move this pawn or that pawn and you have to keep the black king trapped... You need to say white to play, pause the video and see if you can find the solution
@chesswithcoachmarkАй бұрын
Hi, if you watch the first 11 seconds of the video I do say this exact thing as I always give my viewers many opportunities to pause in my videos. You may have skipped over the beginning though. Thanks for watching!
