lol, i just split wood, shovel snow, and do all my building projects in off garden season to keep my old body moving. you are absolutely right though. if we do not keep our bodies active year around, we lose all the gains of the active growing season quickly 🙂

I lost faith in certified organic label years ago when they started to "allow" certain things that weren't what the origional certific organic stood for. 😊

Came here to say this. But it's also very expensive for smaller operations to get certified as the downside.

The biggest step forward in my own non-horticultural career came following completing an intensive certification. My clients only cared about the results, not the label. It taught me the value of pursuing a certification is really making a commitment to learning how to do something at a high level and be accountable to others via tests and papers. Oregon State University now offers a professional certificate for organic growers that can be done at home. It would be an opportunity from someone to do a deep-dive into how to make organic production work without making the commitment to the official certification.

Thank you so much for answering our questions so honestly. Ive just got a new plot and was toying just going for deep mulch beds to set up This has helped me, and saddened me, to realise I should dig over first. I'm still absolutely loving these daily podcasts. Excited for the rework and experiments!!!

I simply wouldn't want to be without your input. Have read your book ragged, and I don't even grow veg (yet..). So much of it is simply about building healthy soil - or helping soil build health. - Grow your soil, let the soil grow your plants - And for the directly veg-related, I am simply encouraged by your thoughtful love of the work & the learning to work better.

On new home exercise routines, you may enjoy the following book: Miranda Esmonde-White The Miracle of Flexibility: A Head-to-Toe Program to Increase Strength, Improve Mobility, and Become Pain Free Been doing a few of the routines and have noticed a significant difference in reduced low back pain. Also feel an improvement in joint stability. Thank you for your content, always enjoy watching!

I use 'organically grown' to describe my produce. I don't subscribe to any of the certifications, I'm too small to justify the cost and time involved. Love that you're covering keeping fit over winter. I'm working on it, hoping to maintain muscle without going into a gym. Thanks for the daily videos.

getting people to throw up their hands and say they don't understand and thus no longer make the effort, is their goal though. we as consumers have to tirelessly work to even have a little confidence that the standard we once desired has been co-opted by big-ag in an effort to weaken our movements for better food.

My wife and I are a part of a organic certified farming Co-op in Canada. One of the most frustrating times of the year is the paperwork required to maintain organic certification. Our organic certification body is also totally unorganized, often not getting back to us in when we need to request information on new ammendments we wish to use. It's gotten to tbe point that we are considering moving on from them and maintaining our ecological principles and organic standards that our Co-op agrees to already.

I recently started strength training at home. Dumbbells are necessary, but I also got by with gallon jugs of water for a while. 😅 The best thing that’s worked for me is establishing a weekly schedule of exercise. Doesn’t have to be the same time every day, just whenever you have 20-30 minutes to spare. If I know I need to get a few moves in on X day, then I make time for it instead of doom scrolling. I also have Apple Fitness+ which has helped me remember to keep to my schedule, so there’s that too if you have the means.

Love Johnny's l was able to visit their test gardens. So interesting. And another cool thing about them is how well they get along with nearby seed sellers. I visited Fedco Seeds which is near Johnny's and then went to Johnny's. When I got to Johnny's and talked to them, it came out that I had just been at Fedco Seeds. Johnny's thought that was great and couldn't say enough nice things about Fedco. Both companies are awesome.

Good podcast, I would like to comment on a couple things. You mentioned skateboarding and an old back injury. I am late 60’s and have skated for 47 yrs. I’ve had my share of injuries but they have been spaced out over time and I avoid the high risk of injury moves. I skate flatland banks and pools, the last few yrs I have moved heavily in the direction of Longboarding, not high impact and if done right is great for flexibility and the lymphatic system, gentle flowing movement with mental and physical benefits. Tony Hawk is still going strong mid fifties, Tony Alva 67 still skating pools. The point is keep moving and keep body and mind engaged, for some like me it’s skating and the gym plus my garden duties. For others it may be bike riding yoga hiking ect. This year I have been hurt worse in the garden form accidents than skating. Not being careful and sleep issues will get you no matter what you do. Great to give the real organic project its due, I’m a longtime supporter and support them regularly. The two episodes on biodynamic growing were insightful also. Good work on the podcast.

For exercise, check out Dan John's work and podcast. He focuses on the fundamental human movements: push, pull, hinge, squat, and loaded carry along with whatever mobility work is beneficial. Like Dan, I have found that if I get in some combination of all those movements on a near-daily basis, I stay physically comfortable without having to think too hard.

2 comments here: 1. Blueberries and acid loving soil sounds challenging in a "no till" environment close to other beds and crops. 2. This is prevalent where I live in South GA, so much previous rangeland and crop land mass turned into Pecan orchards due to the one time investment and the quick turn around and lower input costs with higher back end margins.

Not that you all need another project, but I'd love to see a farmer-specific physical therapy channel...No-Till PT... I've feel like I've gotten good advice from a number of KZbin channels: - Hybrid Calisthenics is down-to-Earth and has good ideas for people without a lot of equipment. - Calsithenicmovement has a lot of detailed videos about technique, and ideas for exercises you can do without any equipment. - Squat University has a lot of videos, and many many shorts, that talk about many causes of chronic pain and exercises that can address them. - Movement System also has a lot of PT videos, particularly about repairing damaged tendons. - Also, I feel like people on this channel would appreciate The Bioneer. He doesn't have as much advice about how many sets and reps to do, but he explores all kinds of different exercise methods. Good one if you like to nerd out about things. Not that there are any nerds here...

great insights on physical health and starting early. for me, i like to keep it simple. weights with dumbbells 4 times per week, 2 push and 2 pull days. And as much daily walking as I can muster. What do you like to do, Farmer?

Because i use fermented compost to build my soil, i feel that im more of a soil gardener than a vegetable gardener. I think organic farmers are awesome though because it'd be a lot of work to be one.

Ima gonna make compost. I'm a gardener/lawnower. I have so much green waste that I have to pay to dump. I'm going to sell to neighbours, local farmers. It will be amazing, but I dont need govt approval. All cash. Chicken compost, Adelaide, South Australia

09:00 when I get my farm Markgden up and running I was going to label it ethological and naturally grown / raised, pharma free. Even starting on unused land for a number of years AND if the previous owner / tenant had records and shared them it's aminium 2 years before you can apply (depending on graze, existing perineal fruit, I believe it's longer for cereal and veg crops) You could be using high raised beds and organic bed creators mulch, compost, manures etc and have marketable crops in year 1 but probably 2 that could be described as organic/ly grown but wouldn't be able to use the labeling (soil association) to sell and start growing customer base and Thier trust
