Wanna hear the absolute worst thing Ubisoft ever did? In Assassins Creed Revelations, they added a feature where if you need to follow a friendly character while you talk, you just have to lock on, and Ezio will follow along. You can just put down the controller and listen. But in the next game, they removed this, and to my knowledge, haven't added it back in.

You know I just realized that the reason NPCs move slower than the player is that if you DO have to follow them and they move the same speed as you do, there would be no way to catch up to them if you fell behind for whatever reason (assuming of course they didnt have some range at which they'd leash and stop moving)

I think Ghost of Tsushima solved this pretty nicely. NPCs always move at the player's speed, so whenever the player runs the NPC runs and when the player walks the NPC walks. If the player does fall behind the NPC will just wait for them to catch up. It's actually quite a simple solution, plus everyone can enjoy the game at their own pace.
