I thought this was an especially helpful idea for anyone, but definitely for those starting out. I think for tech, a lot of people that get into the field is because they find it interesting and may be (not always) a bit of a nerd. I've been an electronics tech for over 20 years but at home I definitely have measurement equipment, components, microcontrollers, etc because I enjoy the activity. Same for IT. Once I was given system administrator duties as well, i set up a home lab. I get that it can be expensive so it's sort of a mix recommendation. For someone just starting out, i think just having two laptops that can be purchased for cheap off ebay and a home router is good enough to start. I'm a big fan of upcycling and restoring older computers and this is an excellent place for beginnings. Installing OS, simple network connections (Testing ping, tracert, troubleshooting firewalls) and installing/replacing older parts or batteries that may be not work properly as these are old computers. You also get exposure to stuff that you may not at work. Maybe you're not in IT yet so how else are you going to get experience? Of course, you're doing it for free, so I get that idea but if you want to break into a field, sometimes it's necessary to go beyond just the normal training lessons and expecting a job to fall in your lap or let your skills diminish. Once you're working yeah, get paid for your work but, if planned right and it's in your budget, I understand things are extra tight the last few years, it's worth the investment of even two used laptops and a home router to get a lot of the basic sys admin/networking/security concepts down.

I stumbled across your channel recently and love the content! Quick question: who's your favorite Star Trek captain? As a 90's kid, it's close for me between Cisco and Picard

Thanks fam, I really like em both but I have to say Picard was my favorite across the franchise, I liked Janeway too, it's still early but nowadays Pike might take it

20 years ago, we set up a CCNA/CCNP lab. It was absolutely necessary. That is, until the routers were time-share and/or virtualized. A couple of things come to mind. First, unless I am chasing a cert, I am not going to do a lick of work for free. If I am messing with AD, I am getting paid! Second, with desktop and/or server stuff, just virtualize it, man! I think what this fellow is saying is that there is a difference between production and all the other types of solutions. Pretty much everyone in IT knows that by now, no?

@@GadgetoolsUnlimited By the way, I really dig the videos. And, truly, there is nothing at all *wrong* with having a home lab, it just seems wasteful in my case. If you were a one man band doing consulting or something, then, yes, absolutely! You can't play around on a client's gear as a contractor. If you are not self employed and you have the ability to virtualize on some hardware, then, why reinvent the wheel at home? There may be some reasons, as you point out. I will reevaluate my opinion in the interest of intellectual honesty.

@@treyrhodes I see you POV and thats probably the biggest aspect of perspective, (how you look @ it) if you feel practicing a skill on your own time is working for free, and you are driven by payment then yes labbing is a waste of your time, but if you feel like practicing a skill is more about self development and becoming the most valuable version of yourself, then labbing is not working for free, it is investing in your own brand, thereby making you more valuable and opening you up to far more opportunity than the pay me my 8hrs guy, my perspective, if that makes sense to ya.

Depends on what you wanna be doing. You can spin up a linux, windows machine or server on any cloud platform. or use a program like VMware on your desktop to create your own virtual environment, and use it for labbing
