@@NoNORADon911 there is so much controversy, I see homesteaders putting them and have been putting them in huge food grade containers (barrels) with NO mylar, NO oxygen absorbers, and I wonder how the old timers did it BEFORE they ever had mylar and oxygen absorbers. I DID put them in 5 gal mylar bags, and squished all the air I could get out of them and sealed them with its zip lock liner. Think it'll be ok? thanks

My 97 year old mom is in hospice in a facility. However, we're about to begin construction on our simple "aging in place" home. My husband is 78 and already unsteady on his feet. We're spending extra money to make it accessible with walk in showers, concrete outside, etc. I'll be putting in raised gardens, a chicken coop, a small orchard and fruit trees/grapes with a good sized country kitchen for canning, dehydrating and hanging out.

@@skybox-101 it will be simple. We'll have a 10x36 front portico. It will have propane, water and electricity. I have a Camp Chef oven/burner camp stove. I'll prep inside but can, grill and bake outside. I have a Solo Bonfire for ambience and cooking over an open flame in addition to our Webber Baby Q grill. Grey water will water my garden and, scraps will either go into the compost or feed chickens (once we have some).

I am so glad you talk about the rough part of homesteading. People have been coming out of the city and expect to live like they did in the city. It is darn hard to live on a homestead, and is not for those foks that don't want to work or can't. I am 70 things get harder as we age fortunately I have family that can offer a hand for the things I can't do, or. heavy lifting. I still do all the gardening and food preservation. It is hot sweaty work. And I do most of the work as my husband has health issues. So women better be strong, because that tree won't fall itself wood won't split itself either. Cloths need washed sometimes by hand as the electric will go out pretty regular. And this clothes need patched as we can't run to the store all the time. The Good Lord willing we can continue this until the day we leave this earth. Blessings to Doug and Stacey for all they are sharing to help the youngn's to learn.

My husband has already made it clear he has no desire to homestead or live in the country. He's lived his whole life on the same street in the township, and we've been watching the city with it's filth and its noise creep closer and closer every decade. This used to be a little dirt road between the greenhouses and the city, and now it's paved with heavy trucks going down it multiple times a day. I miss the quiet.

I remember busting wood to get it inside before a big storm. I'm 5' tall and weigh 100 pounds but was strong as an ox. I’m ageing in place. Everyone leaves here because of getting older and not managing the back steps. I looked after a friend’s farm last week and they are off grid bar electricity but I’d bet my bottom dollar the owner has a lkck ass generator in one of his many barns. Even my own neighbour has one. Lots of people in rural Somerset live on small holdings you wouldn’t believe. Just a few weeks ago a small detached cottage came up for sale, in a field, no road and the bathroom was a porta pottie. Opportunities to live this life aren’t as easy but they are doable.

Good job Doug, I wish my husband would think of everything ahead too. We all eventually will age so it's good to be prepared. After I got foot pain I had no choice but a sedentary lifestyle and then after came back pain. My back pain was diagnosed to be degenerating disks which is in most cases for those who have sedentary life. The doctor advised me to get cortisone injection which I had to do it every six weeks. I didn't agree with the doctor and told him that with that injection it would be like I turn off house fire alarm while there is fire there. The damage will be greater than what it is now. So I thought( BTW I'm a nutritionist) I had to feed my body what it needs ; glucosamine and chondroitin and some vit.C together (the building blocks of our disks and cartilage). I used to take 2 per day 500 mg each but apparently that wasn't enough so I increased it to 4/day and I felt better and then to 6 and then 8. Even 8 is not that much considering to be 4 grams of cartilage. We can take more. Thank God My back pain was gone in less than a year. Still i take those supplements plus some light exercise, walking and light gardening. I wrote all this because you take good care of your mom and I thought sharing it could help her. I wish the best for you and your family and thank you and your lovely wife for sharing your helpful videos.🙏🙏🙏

I agree about the storm. After 911 things accumulatively destabilized. I really became interested in macroeconomics and supply chains. The funny thing is right now people who I don't see regularly are telling me they've been thinking about me and what I said back then. It's really hard and expensive preparing for this stuff. I became a single mom when my daughter was 2 years old. With one income it took me over 10 years to pay off my 20 acres and another 10 to save and build a house. I've shared before on your channel that the house is almost done. My brother said about 2 decades ago we would make it to the land "...by the skin of our teeth." That statement reverberated through my mind everyday and kept me focused. You have to prep where you're at and if you haven't started yet it would behoove you to do whatever you can because the clock is ticking and I know my brother was right. I have studied, saved, and prepped for decades. A solar generator is ready, plans for a greenhouse are underway, and a Harvest Right Freeze Dryer will be delivered when I move. Next steps will be water and a wood burning stove. Builder was charging an arm and a leg for everything so we have city water and propane furnace to start. I'm hoping to finally put some videos out as I start this long awaited journey.

Doug more firewood videos would be nice, too. Basically I think most of us enjoy any and all of your videos. Your life is varied, just like Stacy's. Your channel is good at showing the importance of being a "Jack ,(or Jill), of all trades. Thank you for caring so deeply about us. In case you need a reminder, it is reciprocated. Take care, and God bless.

Good to see an update on mom's place. I was wondering what happened, after the videos on her home build stopped.

Thank You for being a good son. You and Stacy help each other so much and I’m reminded of my wife and I. Although we are now in central Virginia, we are originally from Dayton, OH. If we can help or you’re ever this way, you have peaceful welcome.
