This is such an amazing video Katie! I could use another few months of Victober to read more Victorian literature that I want to get to! The Hand of Ethelberta sounds intriguing, not to mention the other books on here that I've been meaning to read like Olive, The Half Sisters, The Odd Women. And I want to get to some of the more highly rated ones too. Also, I keep mixing up Trollope's He Knew He Was Right with The Way We Live Now. They are not the same book, and I've only read one of them lol.
@katiejlumsden
@katiejlumsden 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks :) I always mix those two up too, even though I've read them both - I think because they were the first two Trollopes I read and then didn't read any other for years - and the names somehow get muddled in my head!

Excellent video! This structure is enjoyable and useful!👏🏻👏🏻 This Victober I wanted to read Olive but I’ll have no time at the end. Rigth now I’m reading Doctor Thorne and October is near to its end. But I’m decided to read it this year.👍 So happy to have read some of the underrated books you‘ve mentioned: the ones by Hardy, Dickens, H.G. Wells and Gissing. And i’ve noted down half a dozen to be read 👌

Great video, as always. Maybe the big difference in ratings in goodreads is caused for the fact that there are a lot of victorian novels that are not translated in other languages, so there can only be rated by those who can read in English and have available the original English versions. For example: it’s impossible to find “Olive” or “Lorna Doone” here in Spain, because they were translated into spanish more than 30 years ago, and that books are no more available. Nowadays there are only 4 Anthony Trollope’s novels translated into Spanish, and “Dombey and Son” is not translated either (which I can’t understand the reason why, because Dickens is indeed a very popular author in Spain). And I suppose that happens the same in other languages, so the community of goodreads that can’t read in English can’t read, and therefore rate, some of those novels. (Sorry for my awful English: I can understand it very well, -in fact I am suscribed to your channel-, but I am totally nerd when I have to write it). I’m a big fan of your channel and of your beautiful accent too 😍😍😍 Greetings from Mallorca

It is very possible, in Romania you cannot find a lot of translations for classics, some old books are not sold anymore. Recently, we had Doctor Thorne translated, but not the whole series. Fortunately, younger generation learnt English and they can read the original version. But also, a lot of people don't read, the statistics in my country are quite bad.
@katiejlumsden
@katiejlumsden 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Your written English seems very good to me. That does make sense about translations - certainly for lots of the books I can only find on ebook in English, if they're not in print here, I'm sure they're not in print anywhere!

Lovely video! You said there's nothing else in Victorian literature like Alice in Wonderland, but actually I'd disagree -- The Golden Key, by George Macdonald, is a children's book that is just as bizarre and fantastical as Alice, and while it isn't quite as funny and clever with words, it makes up for it by being incredibly beautiful. I'd highly recommend picking it up sometime, it's quite short. :D
