Hey guys, Darion from the video here. To answer some of your questions here are some explanations. To the warm up procedure I use, you can do whatever youd like, this is simply what has worked best for me. If youve gone 160k miles on your renesis by letting it idle until it warms up every day then do that. These are my experiences combined with my knowledge of working on these cars over the past 5 years and owning one even longer. The guage pod setup I have is a generic glow shift A pillar pod and I formed the pod to my A pillar with bondo and heat then sanded and spray painted black. Yes I know this car doesnt necessarily "start right up" to someone who is familiat with these cars, BUT to Joe Blow whos never owned anything but a honda civic this could be "starting right up" to him even though its likely his engine is failing. Some of the stuff I covered here is merely my experiences and some of it is straight up facts.

I just wanted to say as a long time RX driver and someone who really got involved in every last detail of the vehicle/engine - this is definitely one of the best "explanation" videos out there; I especially appreciated the side remarks. Good for you for taking the time to put it together and for doing what you do. I'm currently still living in Germany, but will be moving back stateside (also means currently selling my 06 rx - very sad), but I wouldn't be opposed to getting another one once I get over there - maybe we'll cross paths one day. Very great and informative video for RX8 newcomers! I will recommend this one if needed. One side note only, in rx8 you do not really need to premix, as good dedicated Rotary garage can comleptly retune OMP Oil dosing in ECU, and set like 50% more Oil pressure also! That will help even better than a premix. But anyways, great video as I said, cheers!

ALWAYS LET YOUR RX-8 WARM UP! This was a great video but I STRONGLY disagree with his 30 second recommendation. Cold Start: Key on ( wait on beeps to finish) crank. Let it warm till temp gauge moves at minimum. i always wait till its 140 - 150 and then i go about my business.

Its pretty much however youd like to do it to be honest. Theres so many quality control issues with the renesis engine its hard to know what works and what doesnt. Some guy might think hes done good by letting it idle until it warms up, generally speaking this puts less wear on the bearings in any conventional engine. Ive gotten 160k miles now out of mine by starting it, letting it idle for 30 secs or so, then driving gently until the oil is warm. It worked for me, it might work for you, it might also not work for you. Matts comment might work for him, and it might also work for you. Its just one of the things I like to cover.

I have an FC and the gauge actually moves around a lot depends on ambient temps, A/C on/off, stop-start traffic/cruising, and how hard I am driving the car. I am from Australia and during a nice 20-24 degree day, the needle would stop around below 1/2 or at exact 1/2 way. On a hot 30-degree day with stop-start traffic with A/C on, the needle would move up to 3/4 of the gauge. Then If I was able to get the car on the move/cruise, then the needle would drop down to just over 1/2 gauge. I am doing an AC system retrofit/upgrade with a bigger condenser. Also, a bigger radiator to compensate the extra heat from the AC system and getting the engine runs cooler. From this video, it makes sense that the RX8's gauge is one of the major flaws that make the engine fail so much more than the RX7. Also please don't turbo because turbo = trouble. Great video 👍👍👍

This was more to explain to people who may have just bought one and have no clue about anything about the car. To them, that kind of start would be "starting right up", though to us that are more experienced we can definitely tell the difference.

What kind of gauges would you recommend in terms of upgrading from the stock one? Would me plugging in a OBD2 style gauge work just as fine? Also How come the thicker oils? is it just due to reducing wear on the housing?
@darionfarina2069
@darionfarina2069 3 жыл бұрын
I use an aftermarket set of glow shift guages with sending units, you can use a live data OBD2 guage as well that will give you the temps from the sending unit on the engine itself as well, but the RX-8 does not have an oil pressure, or oil temperature sending unit, so those two things will not be able to be monitored via OBD2. Thicker oil helps raise oil pressure as the series 1 renesis engine is notorious for bearing failure. So the increased oil thickness will help keep the bearings from failing and also thicker oil will wick around the housings against the seals better than thinner oil will, which provides added lubrication to the seals.

If you are trying to achieve 300-325 horsepower, then just do the turbo now, and transfer the system to a replacement engine when your compression gives out. You don’t need an oil cooler fan unless you restrict its airflow. If you are trying to achieve 350+, then you should budget for a build and add the turbo at the same time for a bespoke build, instead of two things patched together.

There is so much mis-information in this video. Water temp doesn't rise at the same rate as oil temp. You don't nail your rotary until oil temp is up to operating temp. The oil temp can take a little longer than water temp. "In 2004 Synthetic oils were new" ... wtf? NO ... just no. How well does synthetic oil burn compared to mineral oil? the best option is to feed your OMP from a separate reservoir that is filled with 2T oil, and increase the rate of your OMP (more so with a S1 engine, due to it not having the extra oil injection).

@@ImEasyAs you are absolutely correct, but in the RX-8 bone stock there’s no way to see oil temp or even watch oil pressure drop as the temp rises. Yes synthetic oils weren’t new in 2004 but my point was they were still early in development to as good as they are today. Back then it was actually proven that conventional oils will burn with less residue left behind than synthetic oils, which is a more in depth version of basically what I stated in this video. So letting the coolant get to operating temp before beating on it is better than beating on it dead cold, and synthetics in rotaries now are better tested and it is widely known that it can be used with no problems as previous synthetics 17 years ago were not.

@@ImEasyAs this video was simply aimed at newbies who probably have no idea how to even change their own oil, and gives them a dumbed down version of the knowledge that you and I both have that is easier to understand and easily digested for someone who is new and likely doesn’t understand much.

@@JA-lg3tl Indeed. Nobody with experience really builds Renesis, as I’m sure you know. It’s not ideal for a heavy hitter build. I don’t have an example, but it can surely be done with enough money, special engineering, and special modification with the right fuel. High emphasis on enough money. Probably would blow a few engines on the way, and the ultimate result would not likely be a durable unit anyway. Wouldn’t think too hard on it. I don’t think anybody without super deep pockets would pursue it.

@TOYOTA Boyz Total displacement is actually 3.9 liters but when you directly compare the 13B to a reciprocating 4-stroke engine its more like 2.6 liters. The 1.3 figure is what was called "tax displacement" an idea conjured up by NSU as a way to boost sales by reducing the cost of vehicle registration in countries that tax vehicles based on engine displacement. Most countries now use the 2.6 liter figure.
@darionfarina2069

@@sandervanderkammen9230 this is actually common misconception and myth, and is explained well vastly across the internet, the total combustion chamber displacement across both rotating rotors is 654cc, making total displacement 1308cc, making the engine a 1.3l engine. You cannot compare the rotary to a piston engine in terms of displacement as the displacement is achieved differently, therefore comparing them is null and void. Think whatever you’d like though, I’ve had this conversation with so many people it’s not even funny and they just refuse to believe what I’m saying.

@@darionfarina2069 Sorry but you are very confused and misinformed about calculating swept volume displacement of Internal combustion engines and the fundamental principles of the Wankel KKM engine design. The Mazda 13b series has a total displacement of 3,924cc's But when we compare Wankel engines to normal 4-stroke Otto engines we use the 2x conversation formula for 720° which gives us roughly 2.6 liters in effective displacement.
