I love my RX8. It has 177k miles on it. First engine went tits up at 133K miles. Coolant seals blew, car would still run though, you'd just have to dump coolant into it every drive and it wasnt making much power. But the compression was still good and the apex seals were fine. I got the engine replaced with a mazda remanufactured engine through Rotary Performance in Garland, TX. They also replaced the cooling equipment (radiator, fans, stuff like that), modified the ecu to run the fan longer and turn on earlier, increased oil metering. Also opted to replace the 6speed with a later gen JDM 5 speed. I bought the car for 7000 usd and spent 6500 on the new engine, cooling gear, and transmission. I have done no other major maintenance on the vehicle. Only consumables (ignition coils, brakes, tires, etc) and oil changes. Let it heat up before driving, take it on longer drives, hit those higher rpms every once in a while, keep an eye on your oil level and change your oil frequently. Treat the rotary well and it will treat you well. I drive the rx8 to work every day, 50 miles of highway time every day, and it makes the drive lovely.

I bought a low mileage one, 15 years ago and do about 4000 miles a year. It’s a dream car and everyone I know loves it, including my very critical aero engineer and car enthusiast brother. It’s hardly gone wrong, 4 new Bridgestones, a Lambda sensor and 4 new brake discs. Currently got a MIL 661 error after using very very cheap fuel. Happened once before and cleared after using high octane.it’s oiled and watered regularly.

These can't be had for quite that cheap where I live, but they're still way less than half the price of a 350Z. I've been wanting to buy one for quite a while now, but I've been put off several times now by either my friends telling me that it's a bad purchase or the amount of failed inspections I see when I pull up the car's MOT history. That sound is awesome, though, and I've started to know my way around Mazdas in general. My current daily is a first gen Mazda 3; this is almost like its sporty brother. Guess I'll pull the trigger on one when I find a high power model that's had its engine recently swapped, or a cheap relatively rust-free one as well as an affordable fresh-ish replacement engine that I can fit a direct lube system on. Any downsides you mentioned aren't really showstoppers at all for me, and you're right: most of the complaints I've heard all boil down to insufficient maintenance or wrong expectations. Obviously, I'd still keep the daily for daily tasks. The RX-8 is for the evenings and weekends.

While sure, there are less and more reliable models out there (regardless of price), a very cheap car with lots of wear to it is... well, a car that's been driven to Hell and back, really. A car that's regularly serviced and in good condition is far less likely to have severe issues. Edit: I've noticed that you've only made two videos. I'd like to watch more of your content.

Truly the rx8 is the updated more refined car, and one of the best investments you can make in a sports car right now, the prices are going up on them. I've owned one for 9 years. What'll finally kill it, is the rust. I used it as a normal car - and just kept on top of oil changes, used 2-stroke in the fuel and did basic maintenance. It got to 160k - up until a bogey sparkplug dropped into the engine and spun around. It was in good order up to that point. It ran and made good power afterwards. I'll probably rebuild the engine eventually - just a life extension.

I had an RX8, had around 90,000km on it. I miss it so much. I used it as a daily drive, and while I didn't sit in stop start traffic daily it did get used through the week to and from work, and it was brilliant. I was constantly paranoid though - never really knowing the previous owner's attention to detail on the engine meant I always kept $5k in a dedicated 'engine rebuild' bank account, just in case. And my aftermarket exhaust didn't have an air sensor in it which would always set off the check engine light - nothing wrong with the car, it just didn't like not having that sensor. So OBDII sensor was a frequent passenger in the centre console too. But I'd buy it back if I could. I dearly miss that thing. Evidently "But it has ISOFIX in the back seat" doesn't mean it's a kid friendly car, according to the wife.

I did over 100k on my first RX8. I sold it because of fuel economy and recently bought another one which has over 100k on the original motor. The key to longevity is performing several reliability mods. First, premix with 2-cycle oil. Second, get the SOHN OMP adapter so you can run 2-cycle oil into the engine instead of having it inject dirty oil from the crankcase that wasn't meant to burn in combustion. Third, get rid of the cat, it fails by clogging and can take the motor with it. Fourth, upgrade the stock ignition system because it's weak and fails prematurely. Fifth, make sure the cooling system is healthy and maintained. Last, perform frequent oil changes and increase the oil weight to 10w-30 or 10w-40 depending on the climate you live in. Do all of that and it should run 100k+, assuming you treat it like that from the start (which means you need to start with a fresh rebuild that uses *new* components). The best way to get into one of these is buy a clean chassis with a bad motor and have it rebuilt. Start with a fresh rebuild and maintain it properly, then you'll have a badass sports car that will treat you well for years to come.
@kzz89713 жыл бұрын
Hey, which 2-cycle oil do you use? And do you use the same oil for your Sohn and premix?
@IronicTonic83 жыл бұрын
@@kzz8971 On my original RX8 (the one that went over 100k) I used a synthetic 2-cycle racing oil design for 2-stroke motorcycles, unfortunately I can't remember the brand . I used it mainly because it was convenient, there was a motorcycle shop around the corner that sold it. I have another RX8 now and I'm using Idemitsu for both the SOHN and for premix. You don't have to use Idemitsu, but I would recommend a high quality synthetic 2-cycle oil. Also, I recommend at least half an ounce of premix per gallon of gas. If you drive the car hard or track it, then you could go as high as 1 ounce per gallon. I've never seen any negative side effects from premixing up to a full ounce per gallon, however some people claim it's too much and could clog the fuel filter. @@IronicTonic8 Are you using the Idemitsu Racing Rotary Premix? I can't find that around here. But there are lots of mineral, semi and full synthetic 2-stroke motorcycle oils here. Can I use any 2T motorcycle oil? Or does it have to be a specific spec (viscosity, flashpoint, etc.)? How do you measure how much premix to put into fuel tank? Do you use measuring bottles? And you have to put in the premix before filling the tank up with gasoline right? I'm having trouble measuring how much premix to put in, because I don't know how much gas I need at every fill up.
@IronicTonic83 жыл бұрын
@@kzz8971 I'd recommend something that's synthetic if you can find it. Idemitsu can be bought online, as can many other brands of stock 2-cycle. The motorcycle stuff is probably better suited for a rotary engine compared to something that's designed for a snow blower or some kind of marine motor. Those kinds can have additives that may not jive well in a rotary motor. You want something that burns clean and doesn't leave too many deposits. I use an Idemitsu rotary premix kit that comes with a measuring bottle. You need a good idea of how much gas you'll be filling up because you need to add the oil before gas. I always fill up at the quarter tank mark because that's 10 gallons. I usually mix 6-7 oz for a 10 gallon fill up.

Hey Luke, American chiming in. So far have owned 2 Rx8s both made it well past 140,000 miles. 1st car would have gone longer but was sadly lost to a track accident. 2md car made it to 170,000 miles before compression was low enough that I just got a prebuilt motor from PineApple racing for around $3k-4k all I paid aside from the engine was labor and bam! Brand new car essentially. Love these cars, more than my old FC3S. Keep spreading the truth man

Right, this video has convinced me, gonna get an RX-8 again, but this time as a second car 😅 I miss that buzzy little engine, miss the way it felt through the corners, and you're right, that gear change was sublime.

I drive a 6th gen Camaro SS these days, but once had an opportunity to get an RX8 for free - Which I passed up. Always kind of regretted it. You get out of these cars what you put into it. My Camaro for instance has a pretty rock solid LT1 V8 engine but is well known to need semi-regular rear differential fluid changes, transmission fluid changes on the A8 and A10's, there are even bolts under the car you need to monitor and keep tightened. I love the car so I do all that work myself. The RX8 sounds similar. Those are very cool, unique cars - Whereas a Camaro you see almost every day now here in the States. Good luck to you and your RX8 and happy motoring!

Because the majority of people that own one don't know how to take care of them, and knowing you're supposed to redline them more than twice a week to get the excess carbon buildup out, and im talking from experience as my parents used to own one our rx8 broke down quite a bit because they didnt know that and we tried to daily it like that, so thats usually why

@@vortex1628 yeah I mean unless you're willing to do tune ups yourself, which in my case isn't an issue, but still tbh I would probably rather a 7 over an 8 or even an MX5, just less hassle, unless I had the choice of an NSX or Supra, but they're not exactly in everyones budget range.

I've got a 2004 with just under 140,000 that still does 0 - 60 mph in 5 seconds (and change) which is what the first years RX-8 was listed to do. I agree that its not a car that doesn't need some extra special care. Here is what I do for what its worth. I premix 2 cycle oil (a small container) every time I fill the tank. I always fill it with the correct octaine. No "cheap" gas / petrol. I don't hammer the engine until its come up to temp. So when its cold no 9K revving for example. Once its warm I do rev it quite high even if I'm going to the grocery store and back. When I park and stop it I rev the engine to 2 to 3K count to 4 and while revved up I turn the key to the off position. Oh... and frequent oil changes and checking its not low. Everytime I fill the gas unless I'm in some major rush. What this does is this. The reason I add oil to the fuel is that the normal scheme of counting on used 10/30 (or whatever) dirty engine oil (of not enough qty) keeping the engine happy is wrong. The engineers just blew it... It should have its own secondary injection scheme for putting in two cycle oil and of enough qty to lubricate the rotors. I'm too busy to try to buy or design an automated way of doing it and its just not that much trouble to just do it myself at the pump. Not high revving when cold I think is obvious... A car that redlines at 9K is.... Quite unusually high so you need everything to have warmed up. Once warmed up you do want to rev high to blow out the crud? This one I'm not sure about it was something I was told and seems right. The rev, hold, count 4 is so the engine doesn't flood. These engines don't explode or flood without a reason. The years after the 2004 were filled with things to reduce emissions and slow it down. Maybe they included an auto self destruct engine as well?! All I have is my experience with the first years model... I will say one thing that I think is unacceptable about the RX-8. The gauges for temp and oil need to be torn out and stomped flat. One doesn't attach to anything! The other gives you no useful information. Other than that its the most agile and quickest car I've ever owned. *I'm not claiming to have experience with a lot of fast cars. Going round cloverleafs posted as 20 MPH at 55 is great fun and shows that at least one of the designers was indeed a race car driver that knew how to make a proper suspension so the car stays glued to the road. Thanks for your great video btw!

Completely underrated car imo. Rev them high, hit the corners hard and use it for what it was meant to be used for. Ive had 2. 1 great and the other a bargain roll of the dice that i crapped out on. Thinking of picking up a 3rd for track use and teaching the kids how to drive stick. Ive owned cars 2x-3x faster and have an aprilia crotch rocket and still the rx8 was more fun than the other cars and on par with the aprilia but just in a different way.

I stumbled (unknowingly) across a 300,000km original engine well cared for example here in Australia, which was running like clockwork for about a year of me owning it, until I started getting oil leak issues and having to replace a radiator due to it cracking, and not at that time having a vaccum filler. Safe to say I cooked it, but, when I tore it down, I got a lot of parts that cleaned up spectacularly. I'm now in the process of gathering tools and parts to rebuild a replacement engine I have acquired, while I streetport the old engine. They are cracking little cars, the hate is undeserved.

The cat blockage is due to the need for oil to be present in the combustion chamber for apex seal lubrication. In the end it doesn't matter how it gets there (injection, premix), or whether it's ashless 2 cycle oil, or fully synthetic engine oil; rotary catalysts live on borrowed time, period, the end.
