I swear Brennan has the definition, connotation, and origin of every word in the English language
@Wimikk Жыл бұрын
He doesn’t have a definition, he’s just trained in philosophy. The first step to approaching any problem in philosophy is to clearly your terms, and as you practice this more, you get better and better at determining the most useful way to define terms to help clarify the problem at hand. That’s all he did here. He asked us to imagine a better definition, sold us on a use case (in gaming), and ended the semantic confusion by introducing “resiliency” as the metric for resisting pain. I could argue the opposite. Strength IS used in many cases to refer to “resiliency.” For an engineer or even a climber, tensile strength would be quick to mind. When people describe the strength of Malala, are they saying she can dish it out like a glass cannon? No! See? Or someone could fully upend the question by rejecting the terms. “Neither, Sam. You would be stupid.” And this doesn’t mean there isn’t truth. I’m not advocating for debate - I’m saying that the skill in philosophy is on full display here in helping to find useful answers to messy questions.
@Stardust_Lily Жыл бұрын
@@Wimikk Super true! Even aside from philosophy, it's an improv skill. If you do improv, you need to be able to justify literally any scenario, situation, or fact on the spot. you're simply avoiding explaining the actual point of the question, which is to also consider that being hurt by your own punch can also mean you have a low pain tolerance. and the point of the question is also not to have a correct or incorrect answer, because its purposely unanswerable. you cant know this specific information about a hypothetical person punching themselves. they could be strong, they could be weak, maybe they just enjoy the pain. there's no right answer.

It could be either. You could have chronic pain and a gust of wind could hurt you a lot. So a half assed punch could hurt you a lot. Or if you are relatively invulnerable and unaffected by almost all forms of blunt force, and you punch yourself and make it hurt, you are strong. In either case you would just be strong enough to hurt yourself. The ambiguity is more so about the energy required to cross the threshold for experiencing pain, and that threshold can vary a lot.
