Dan, about ten years ago New Hampshire went to a split system for rescues. If the weatherman said 80° sunny and balmy at 7AM and you got hit by a 4' blizzard after lunch, they won't charge you for the rescue. OTOH if it was 45° out and predicted to snow heavily by sunset with temps below zero, and you set out in shorts with no shelter? Yeah, you are going to get the bill. They've been doing this through an objective program, with almost everybody happy. Idiots pay the stupid tax, victims of circumstance don't. And it keeps taxes down. The policy is well posted at trailheads all over the state.

@@DanBecker In New Hampshire we have Hike Safe Cards you can pay for on New Hampshire Fish and Game website. $25 for an individual, or $35 for a family (parents and minor children), and are good through the end of the calendar year. If you need by chance a rescue, then you're not liable for rescue cost. Fuel for the national guards black hawks, man hours, etc.

In NH - mainly in the Whites - we have a lot of rescues involving negligence. But I feel it’s applied appropriately. Hiking in sandals, no headlamp, no food or water - that happens more often than you’d think. And yes, in those circumstances, you will be charged if SAR is needed.

I live in Sweden and last year my parents bought a inreach mini 2 for me (but I pay for the subscription) because I mainly hike with only my dog as company. Earlier this year I got myself in a situation when I was hiking in the mountains and I wasn’t able to get my dog and myself out of there so I had to push the SOS button. I wouldn’t change it for a phone with satellite. I like that Garmin updates your emergency contacts from the moment you press the sos button to the moment you’re “safe”. This time I was able to talk to my parents (who are my emergency contacts) and warn them I was pushing the button. But it was nice to see how things worked when it wasn’t an emergency and my parents worry a lot less since we got the inreach. The police picked me up in a helicopter and dropped me off near my car. So far I haven’t had to pay. Something that I noticed when sos was active on my Garmin was that it was draining the battery and the battery on my phone held up better than the battery on my inreach, even though I used my phone to write all the messages.

I have tested both. You can only send a message if your phone is on SOS. If you have service but it does not work, you have nothing. You can't put your phone into SOS mode to force it to send over satellite. Garmin always sends the message as long as you have a clear view of the sky. Until Apple allows you to send a message over satellite when your phone is reporting service but it is not functional over cellular, Garmin has a more reliable product for use out in backcountry.

I am going to stick with a Personal Locator Beacon. While it does not have any messaging features, there is no subscriptions or costs beyond the device, it connects to multiple satellite networks, and has about 3-X times the broadcasting power (depending on which beacon) of any messaging device, which means I can transmit successfully in places where the messaging devices can't such as deep forest or inside a ravine. It also directly connects to local government rescue services anywhere in the world including the middle of the ocean.

So much talk about iPhones and Garmins as if those are the only two choices. Passing mention of Pixels having SOS and a small bit about Spot, but Zoleo, Somewear, Bivystick... And what about dedicated PLBs? Regarding the "don't hesitate if you're in genuine need," I hate to inform SAR that I will still be hesitating because if there is a chance of an ambulance or hospital getting involved, I can't afford that, and I don't feel like I get to tell SAR to rescue me but to leave the US healthcare system out of it completely. US healthcare needs to be fixed before I'll ever not hesitate to call for help. Also, with random exceptions like Dixie's lurking out there just waiting to surprise me with a ruinous bill I was never warned about, I'm never going to trust that SOS button to be free. Never. And paying a corporate middleman insurance is not a proper solution. That's too easily exploited by greedy suits (see: us healthcare costs and health insurance premiums).

Dude, there's really no Garmin-Apple war. The InReach private consumer market is a minute, minuscule part of Garmins business. The whole consumer products thing is kinda a side-business for Garmin altogether, because they are primarily a marine and aviation navigation company, who delivers GPS solutions to commercial fishing boats and the aviation industry. Also, the main bulk of the people having an InReach are actually serious people, who of course wouldn't trust their lives with an iPhone for a second on a winter expedition or something.
@zachweinberg8318Ай бұрын
I'm curious about this Yellowstone Trip. I get that a certain percentage of your audience is new to backpacking and may not have their stuff. But there's got to be a decent percentage of your fans that have taken your advice over the years and collected the gear needed to meet you at the trail ready to go. With that, I'm wondering if you do any trips for non-beginner backpackers that's maybe a little less money but requires a bit more self-reliance? Perhaps something in Sequoia National Park around next August? Lol, just something to consider. Also, I've been using the iPhone for satellite messaging since iOS 18 came out (maybe 2-3 trips now)... there's no reason for an InReach anymore. If like me and most people watching you, you're in the U.S., and can make to semi-unobstructed skies, I haven't had an issue or put much effort into sending texts to my loved ones while backpacking.

A Garmin inreach (or the GPSMAP for that reason, it also has the Inreach functionality) is a two-way communication device. You can explain your situation instead of only pressing the SOS button. Very helpful when not in a life threatening situation but you do need help. They can talk back and give you advice. Or you can just message your friends and family about non-emergency situations. Edit: a PBL doesn't have this two way communication
@craigiedema170716 күн бұрын
@e.k.4508 I asked this question because I've heard that sometimes there can be problems with these 3rd party services contacting emergency services.
