I’m doing a no buy simply because I don’t need anything. My goal for this year is to only buy something to replace something I need if it breaks.

I am joining you in a no buy of clothing and items I don't actually need for the rest of the month. I am doing this because I need to free my mind from the clutter of consumption. I spend too much time online shopping, looking, and thinking about buying. Also I enjoy doing this with you and feeling apart of a "group" that is doing something useful for the planet.

2023 was a low buy year for me thanks largely to your videos and the Sustain This podcast. ATM I'm using up all the travel size products (shampoo, shower gel etc) and the multitude of styling products I have accumulated over the years so that I can declutter my bathroom. It is taking forever but is a good reminder that I have way too much stuff.

I recently lost a parent. With that, I realized that they only thing we take with us is memories. As a result, I’m determined to declutter my home every six months, buying only what I need, and save my money for travel. Creating memories is my goal, not collecting stuff.

This also happened to me. I lost my mom, and had to deal with bags of clothing. I don't want to that to my only son. I am really enjoying getting back to knitting for my family and shopping my closet while using the free app Open Wardrobe.

I decided to make 2024 a no buy and decluttering year. Why? 1. I have too much stuff. 2. I've been spending too much money buying things I don't need. 3. I want to retire within 10 years. 4. I don't want to leave a lot of unnecessary stuff for my boys to clean up when I die. 5. I want to make life peaceful. So far I've decluttered 2 closets, multiple cabinets, and drawers. It can be overwhelming, but just pick one small spot at a time and stop when you get tired. I will not stop until every room is complete. I don't even want to bring anything new into the house at this point. Seeing results is amazing. Thank you for making videos to encourage us!

I need to do something too, I am trying to find the strengh to do it. Too much stuff that I feel overwhelm because I feel I am living like a hoarder, collecting beautiful things that I don't have the oportunity to use and enjoy because I have a very simple lifestyle and job. I need to stop.

For me it's not about money or being addicted to spending money/shopping, for me it's about not having any real hobbies other than going to a (second hand) shop and browse. I am using my no-buy month to see if I can find other hobbies and activities that don't necessarily involve buying things.

I'm always trying to curb my urge to shop. I did much better last year thanks to watching your videos, espcially my tendency to shop for my 'fantasy self' and impulse buying. That woke me up and made me assess everything I have, so thank you. This year I want to continue selling my unwanted things and work on my saving goals. I also agree that it's very hard to stop shopping completely and we shouldn't beat ourselves up if we do slip up sometimes.

I have decided to do this because I was so disgusted with myself seeing all the packages (on sale...)) come in this week. The overconsumption doesnt feel like me and I know I am using shopping as a way to deal with my anxiety. I used to binge eat as a teen and now I binge shop and purge return. So I will beat this problem too...Hopefully we will all be better this year!

At the end of last year my car died and i had to use all my savings to buy a new one leaving me utterly broke. In the light of this I decided to do a no buy January which has expanded into a no buy year and your content is so helpful! I have followed you for a few years but after 5 years of shopping too much - i blame menopause and covid lockdowns - I am ready to take control. It feels so good and actually a relief. Oh and I am a nail biter also so a monthly manicure will be the perfect reward for my discipline. Keep the motivational vids coming. Love your work

I love your tips. 🎉 I will say this for the sake of encouragement. *100%* of women (who live long enough) will go through perimenopause and menopause, and it starts in your 30s. When you are in the thick of experiencing body changes and finding your new style identity, give yourself grace. Figure out your new health and fitness. Buy and return as needed until you are comfortable again…and then you’ll be in a position to be as strict with yourself again and embark in as many challenges as you’d like.

“Do it when it’s easy and do it when it’s hard” I apply this quote to every area of my life. Exercise, even flossing my teeth! If I only did it when it was easy I would never see results. Doing it when it’s hard is how you build discipline vs running off of motivation which doesn’t last

I did a no spend/low budget journey for the entire year of 2019. It was so successful. I paid off all my debt for the first time in over a decade, saved enough to put a downpayment on my new home in December 2020 and I'm now on track to pay off that 30 year mortgage by January 2025. The most important thing it did was give me perspective on our consumer culture and how I could craft a life that I love without consuming constantly.

@@azsubie3177 You can definitely do it. One tiny strategy I used was if I was thinking of buying something (usually small) and then I changed my mind about spending the money, I would then take that amount and apply it to one of my bills. My thought was if I had bought the item I would already be out the money so why not put it towards a bill. Sometimes it might be only $20 but it was the idea of refocusing that consumer urge towards my real goals. I have faith in your ability to pull this off. Btw....I was 61 years old in 2019. It's never too late!

I’m motivated by the Sustain This episode where you talked about only buying five new items per year. Considering consumption as something that impacts the planet along with my wallet and storage restrictions makes me think before I buy. I’ve been creating seasonal capsule wardrobes and putting everything else in bins. It’s so freeing!

Committed to a “very low buy” year for 2024. My “why” is that I have lots of clothes, makeup, skin care and books - need to “use it or lose it”. So I’m wearing and using what I have until the end of the year. I will buy new skin care etc only when I have run out. This means using up my “ just in case/ backup” products. If they don’t work or are unacceptable for some reason, I give myself permission to get rid of them at the end of the year. And if I haven’t worn/ used it by the end of 2024… I will let them go with no regrets. A few exceptions: possibly an outfit for an upcoming family wedding, new prescription sunglasses, a lightweight black blazer ( longtime wish list item). I do find the “ all or nothing” approach works best for me - less decision-making, no “negotiating with myself”. And I look forward to a cleaner inbox after unsubscribing to lots of retailer mailing lists.

This is excellent advice! Super helpful. I'm doing a no buy on some categories and a very low buy on certain things as true needs arise. For example my black leggings were getting thin and pilling. Not good for winter LOL. So when I went to the thrift shop, instead of looking at all the racks I went straight to The Pant section. I found a nice quality pair for 5 dollars! Then I went straight to the checkout rather than shopping all the areas. It saved me a lot of time and money.

I am doing a no buy year. Technically it started on the 1st of Jan, but I haven’t bought anything since early December 🎉. Mine is for fashion and fashion related items. Makeup and beauty I was already pretty good with, I have a great skin care routine that I love and are happy to stick with it, so I’ll continue with my replacements when needed. My why? I’m sick of buying things I don’t wear, I just need a reset and I need to spend time with the wardrobe I have. I’m in summer atm, last year before summer rolled around I purchased 4 dresses cause I wanted to be a dress girlie, guess what? She ain’t no dress girlie! So it just needs to stop, I’ve wasted so much money!!! Anyway, I’m actually feeling really excited about it, I’ve unsubscribed from all my fav store’s emails and socials and haven’t been tempted to even look at their websites. Going to do a declutter this weekend and create a capsule wardrobe, so looking forward to that!

I am on a no buy till May, and then maybe on a low buy till the end of 2024. My why is I do not want to stress out over money - ever again. I have everything I need, and more. The goal is to save and spend some of the savings on a summer vacation in Norway. I unsubscribed from all of the content that could tempt me, I paint and read, started the gym (paid for in November, went only now 🥴), and I play a lot of board games with my family. It really helps a lot. I don’t even think about shopping, we hang out together and laugh. Amazing. I see benefits of strict budgeting already, the piece of mind I have knowing that money is untouched in the account 🎉 Thanks for your encouraging videos ❤

I am doing a no buy challenge for the entire 2024. Based on how much I spent on December I believe it is going to be difficult but I got my husband to keep me accountable. My no buys are: clothes, makeup, skincare, shoes, home decor, or household items(pots, pans, plates etc) for 2024 Exceptions: birthday splurge Replacement for something broken or finished (only if it's a staple) A small splurge on April (when I get my bonus) Gifts for loved ones No online purchases (unless the item I decided to buy in store is cheaper online) 2-3 times a month eating out Souvenirs from my travels Wish me luck 🍀

I started on 1 October 23. Spent R8250 (South African Rands) on a number of items for myself. I have under 100 days left. I am calling this my Appreciation Year where I appreciate what already own. It's not the easiest challenge. Just today, I had the urge to buy a Revlon hair care set, but I do have hair care products and one bottle of Revlon shampoo. So I worked through the boredom. Filed my feet, gave myself a mini facial, took a nap and went to the gym. These are all shopping replacement behaviors for me. For anyone on a No Buy or Low Buy, be extra extra gentle with yourself. Habits run deeper than we know. Love & Light xxx

Love the tips! Especially the one about creating friction and ignorance being bliss. I live outside New York City and I’m saving for a 2-week vacation to Korea. When I’ve taken trips in the past, I’ve charged everything and worried about how to pay for it when the bill came. This time, I’m saving all the money I’ll need in advance - including money for food, experiences, souvenirs - so when the bill comes, I’ll be able to pay it all off in full.

I got out of debt last year and decided to do a No Buy this January for the second time ever as a way to spend more meaningfully so I don't go into debt again when I don't need to. I also got my SO on board, since one of our 'problem' areas is dining out. For our most recent date night, we were going to watch a movie, but we just spend the whole evening having a meaningful conversation instead. It was one of the most connected nights we've had at it costed zero dollars. I love that I'm already seeing the benefits in my life.

Great video, Christina! I did a no-buy November (which was so hard, with all the Black Friday sales) and I wanted to continue in that vein into 2024, but I stumbled upon a couple of items that I've been wanting/needing just in the last couple of days, so I went ahead and pulled the trigger, and I don't feel bad! One was a replacement for my black leather booties that are 15 years old and SO beat-up, and the other was a long, 100% wool Brooks Brothers coat that I stumbled upon on Poshmark and got for $40! 😍

I'm going very very very low buy this year. I'm not a big shopper in the first place, but as my financial situation majorly shifts, I really want to save as much as possible, and really find the joy that's already a part of my life! My exceptions are supplies for work and school (which comes out of a specific set of savings), eating out (only when it's to spend time with others or occasionally to take myself on a date), and experiences that mean time with people I love or bring my joy. I'm also willing to buy hobby supplies, but only if it's to finish a project with the supplies I already have. I'm really striving not to spend money on clothes this year, unless it's a work need or replacement. I will allow for the occasional accessory if I find one that's really calling to me, but even that I really want to limit. My goal this year is to really dig into my values, and follow my joy! And the way I find that easiest to do is to make sure I'm only engaging in what matters to me.

A few years ago, something happened at my work and for a while I thought losing my job would be highly probable. I decided to save every penny then until my job situation was more stable and was successful. This year, I’m doing a no buy with some personal rules. I know I can manage it. Frankly I have so much stuff. For every special occasion I can put a minimum of 10 outfits together from what’s already in my closet let alone everyday stuff 😂 My reason is reaching a specific financial goal as well as preventing myself from obsessing over things that I constantly was considering buying.

I agree with everything you say. I find the ‘no buy’ of some people too extreme though. Restocking shouldn’t be included in the no buy, as long as you use things up and not shop around and keep trying things. That includes skincare, body care etc. Even makeup tray you have used up and know works for you. Moderation is key. As for the low buy, that SHOUD be a living philosophy for everyone. Just get things that work for you, shop for utility and not shop for pleasure. I’m still working on this, because I used to have this habit of automatically going to the shopping apps when I’m doom scrolling on my phone. I made a list of things I think I’ll need regularly, like toiletry or body care I’ve been using regularly, and making sure I stick to the essentials. No body scrubs and the fancy schmancy. I’m quite good with clothes, as I’m not into clothes and shoes that much, fortunately. But I used to be awful with home decor.

I am doing a No buy in January for clothes and make-up. I only buy a product when I run out of it. The main reason is because I spent too much on clothing the last couple of months. Altough the pieces that I have bought are really a staple now in my wardrobe. I am buying more concious. What keeps me going is the fact that I can focus on other hobbies. I found out that I tend to shop more when I am feeling emotional or stressed. To end with the best thing is knowing yourself and set up rules and make sure you give yourself some time before buying. Creating new outfits with clothing you already have is fun too ❤ thanks for the video Christina!

I am doing a low buy on clothing and a no buy on make-up/skincare. The only reason clothes is a low buy because I will need 3 specific items for summer that I do not have / the old ones do not fit me anymore. I hope I will manage! Thank you for the motivation :)

I'm currently doing a no buy January and I've signed up to do a level up boot camp mini- course for the week. This will help me keep my focus on my no buy and other goals for this year. I have also made a capsule wardrobe from my most loved items and are currently playing with what I have , so no shopping clothing sales in January for me this year 😊

Thank you. I am trying to do this in this month of September, because I too, overspend when I don't want to feel my feelings. I really liked your point of 90 sec of feeling a feeling vs months of regret of overspending..Makes total sense.

Changing my perspective about the money I receive from income as my “financial resources” rather than “my money” has jumped started my journey into a no buy challenge for 2025

YES. So much in this really resonates for me. The reason for the internet overall, I am pretty sure, is to get us to spend our money. These phones and screens are basically slot machines--dopamine fix included!!! They make little noises, are shiny and bright and want us to keep going back and back...and they include, in the end, mostly false promises. I've DEFINITELY felt the withdrawl already from my No Buy--I'm doing it because we're trying to save for our fully funded emergency fund this year. And over the last six weeks i've already felt the "i don't want to feel what i'm feeling so i really want to reach for that phone." I am a poet and this behavior has led to me being quite creatively sick. It's interesting how the detox from screens (for me) has really contributed to the detox from shopping and wanting things so much. I really have what I need. I can appreciate what I already have. And I really, really love that feeling. Thanks for this list. Really inspires me to KEEP GOING!

I'm doing a low buy year with designated purchases through out the year. I am also planning to use up what I have unless I hate it or it doesn't work for me, and clear out a lot of clutter. We are also doing a 24 out each month decluttering challenge - I made it up, and we've already met our January goal. I find myself scoping out the next spot for decluttering. It all goes together!

I’m doing a no buy year basically because I don’t need a damn thing. I’ve spent the last 2 years decluttering and reducing. I’m retired now and just don’t need as much stuff, especially clothes anymore. My husband has never been one to buy much so he’s easy. I’m only buying if something breaks and needs replacement and even then I’ll decide if it’s necessary. Good luck to all on this journey ❤

I always fail at this, but I am going to give it another try! No clothes, no makeup/perfume, shoes…exceptions to replace something, underwear or socks if needed. I am going to use what I have and remind myself I have enough…all what you mentioned…help me universe! 😂

Im challenging myself to a no-buy rules are only essentials for 6 months. It is to hopefully give me space to revaluate my priorities and help me pay down debt I got myself into impulsively. Also I only recently in my 9 years as an adult have savings, so I want to continue to grow them.

I love the focus on not viewing it as a punishment, and definitely love that you have this theme running in your other videos (e.g. decluttering shouldn't feel punitive) I'm doing a low buy January and while there have been a few instances of wanting things, I find I'm forgetting about them later on and have less anxiety around having to 'manage' my new purchases

I did a 24 things I'm not buying in 2024 with the only exception being if I ran out of an item and it was something I genuinely needed (ie, skin care, a particular makeup item, etc). I'm also doing a closet purge, going to try my best not to buy any clothing and get rid of one item per week throughout the year. If I do buy something clothing wise, then something else has to go. The goal is to make space, not replace the things I'm getting rid of immediately.

My main problem is clutter. I know I use impulse buys as a way to cope with stress. It's fun having a package to look forward to. I'm not buying anything that takes up space in my home for a year unless I'm replacing something I've used up.

I did a "no buy" last year with yarn and it worked out so well! I ended up using 4 balls of some of my stash of yarn. I think realistically it helps me to have a category for a no buy. So this year on my no buy is yarn and books. I need to get through my stashes of those until I buy new.

My goal is to scale down on over consumption. I will work on a low-buy year. I am not in debit, but I feel that I over indulged myself in making a lot of new clothing purchases (including shoes and purses) over the last few years. I know I can do it and I am ready to start this journey. First, I will limit my viewing of KZbin fashion influencers. Next, I will try my hardest to avoid being drawn into the marvelous sales that many retailers offer. Finally, I will declutter and be more creative with the wonderful pieces I did invest in. In addition, I will focus on more meaningful things to do with my time (I am retired). Thanks for your inspiration. I really enjoy your videos.

Picking up knitting to avoid buying can throw you to next struggle though. I've made all my knitwear myself for few years now and a) buying yarn and patterns is addicting and b) good quality yarn might make the garment even more expensive than in store. Just a fair warning. 😅

Thank you so much for posting this video! I’ve been wanting to do no buy for months and have tried but failed due to not having a concrete plan and a severe shopping addiction lol. The way you laid it out into simple steps with tips really helped me organize my thoughts and feelings. And I love your emphasis on self compassion because when you’re in a cycle like this it can be so easy to beat yourself up constantly like I have been for years. Now I feel way more confident going into my no buy/low buy and I’m actually super excited to see how it goes. Here’s to a future where we aren’t controlled by ads and capitalism telling us we need the next new “better” thing. ❤ sending love and I believe in each and every person doing this right now. We got this!

I’m so glad I found your channel. I’m going to binge watch all of these no buy videos. I’ve tried it before but was never able to do it. I bought a lot of clothes because I love clothes and wearing new outfits. Not boredom or stress I just love clothes. However, my life has changed and I’ve worked from home since COVID and don’t need all the nice fancy work clothes. I’ve been struggling with still having nice stuff for when I do leave the house and comfy stuff for at home. In my struggle I’ve been buying way too much. So I want to do a low buy 2025. I already have my reasons written down to help keep me focused.

one thing i’m doing to stay consistent is romanticizing my budget!! i purchased a beautiful & awesome annual budget spreadsheet template (press reset on etsy) and it sounds silly but having a beautiful lil spreadsheet where i can plan everything out and plan/visualize my goals is so helpful. tracking expenses is so helpful cuz it forces you to sit down and reflect on where your money went. i find i need to become low key obsessed with things to stick to them LOL so im always finding ways to remind myself of my budget & plan like watching your videos in the background while i do other things and it just keeps it on my mind. i def try to keep an abundance mindset like you said tho and instead of thinking about how much debt im in now, i think about how exciting the idea of being debt free & financially free is and just focus on that feeling instead of letting myself feel deprived!!

My low buys: one book per month [must donate at least 2], and sewing only one garment for myself per month [with likely donation of something]. Sewing for friends: unlimited, it feeds my love of sewing. I have a capsule wardrobe now, I don't need many garments. Also stopped watching fabric hauls. It's not healthy, especially with the price of fabrics these days. 😮 Great video.

Omg.. that whole piece of shopping taking up a lot of time and energy is SO TRUE!! I have those exact internal debates with myself, it's awful and anxiety inducing. Since November I have a strict budget I can use to buy stuff, however I am starting something new as of today- I am allowing myself 1-2 new clothing pieces per month, and I am not allowed to return any!! Its too easy to tell myself "oh its ok I can return it if I change my mind" but I do it WAY too often.

I'm on a no-buy year. Just want to stop wasting money when I know I already have everything I need. I have recently realized I buy clothes when I am hating on my self and my body, so I will buy anything that fits, even if it isn't my style or taste. So, enough. Instead I will focus on adjusting how I am feeling about my body when I start looking at clothes. And I am curious how much less I will spend monthly when I am doing this. I would love to pay off my house early this way!

Thank you for the informative and inspiring video. I did a no buy last year for 9 months which helped me enjoy what I had and not accumulate more. This month I realized I wanted to feel my personal style more with the help of other KZbin videos. So I purchased a few items (many) to have what was missing to complete my look. Neighbors and friends enjoyed all the items I let go of. I sold some as well to be able to donate to world central kitchen. Compassion for others and myself is my word/focus this year. PS I love your practical ideas! You are exactly what I needed to hear and embrace. Much gratitude ♥️🥰

I'm working no buy months on the months with 31 days. I was pretty successful in January only buying seed potatoes and onion sets and a perfume (my daughter and I share and it completely ran out before the end of the month) I'm now getting geared up for no spend March! Feb was pretty intense as I started buying trips and bits for our summer holiday. I think I'm essentially using no buy months to spread the cost of this long awaited trip. I'm not buying clothes, books, toiletries, take away food/ drinks, items for hobbies. This also encourages me to be creative with what I already have.

Decided to do a low buy this year and I made all the way to January 3rd! Bought 2 pair of footwear while I was returning something from before Christmas! Uhgggg!! Love and relate so much with your content ❤ Im doing the challenge to see if i can discipline myself and have some control over my shopping habits. I started online shopping during covid which is also when i started a full time job for the first time. It was the first time i was earning a lot meant i was literally buying everything i could from skincare, clothing and shoes. So much so that i had no idea what i owned and bought. My after-pay bill was $250 a weekly, i know afterpay is fortnight payments but not if you shop weekly. So i want to have more control over my spending habit.

I want to thank you for your video. I have had a bad problem with buying throughout my life and this past October I really outdid myself at Old Navy to the point of being overdrawn in my checking account. As you can imagine, I was mad at myself. Your video popped up in my feed about your no buy to pay off your college debt and I thought this would be the answer to not only my problem, it would promote a good savings habit as well. I started Jan '24 for a year no buy - the worst part was we celebrated Christmas late and I wound up spending $250 in gift cards (yes, there are 10 people). So I have established a Christmas fund so I don't run into that again. My no buy list is small but packs a punch - no new clothes, shoes and minimal art supplies. Also, no more $75.00 hair cuts (+$10 top). My goal is to save as much money as I can and finally get out of this habit of consuming! Already have two new lists on amazon for anything I may want, and I'm not going to 'punish' myself if I do spend money - just pick up and go on to the next day. Congratulations on reaching your goals - that is awesome. By the way, I'm 73 years old and in my 3rd year of retirement. For all you who are young and just starting, do something for yourself now because this need to have it all doesn't just go away, okay? You have blessed my life Thank you - LindaH PS - am in my 2nd phase of decluttering - will never be a minimalist, but I don't need all this stuff!

I was in an accident in March and subsequently my income cut almost in half. I used my savings because I thought I would get back to “normal within a few months after the accident, and then I would be able to tighten the belt a little and replenish my savings. Skip a vacation or something. Well, things didn’t go as I had imagined and now I’m facing 2024 as a low buy year. It would definitely be a no buy year but I have four children and they have already dealt with a lot from my accident. Sharing because things don’t always go as you would think. I think of all the things I’ve donated - I’m always decluttering- but I always bought, so it was a cycle. Now I declutter and I actually enjoy the space and the things I love. I wish I didn’t have to go through my savings to learn this. I am allowing myself to spend on replenishing and replacing. But we have a lot already to enjoy!

I have decided to try a no buy year. I am allowing myself to replace items if need be, buy gifts for family on birthdays and holidays, experiences with family, spend for church functions, and any pet expenses that come up. I have even limited my groceries to replacement only. I don't eat out, other than on special occasions, and I have plenty stored up. My reason for this no buy is to build my 3 month expenses account.
