I have told all 4 of my married adult kids that next year no more Xmas gifts for them only the grandchildren and that will be limited. They are all well off (make more $ than us) and don’t need a thing. I told them please don’t buy us anything as well we don’t anything and will buy it if we do. We will do a family white elephant gift which we did one year and had so much fun. I also said the same for their birthdays. It’s ridiculous to call my almost 40 yr old to ask what he wants for his birthday! We would much rather take them out for dinner or spend time with them . Thankfully they are all in agreement . The consumerism and stress has just got to stop and it will begin with us in 2025 🎉
@TidywithSPARK21 күн бұрын
Bravo! What an incredible gift you're giving your kids by having these real conversations. I applaud you and I'm in awe. We've done something similar in my household and I 100% agree that if there is something I want, I simply decide to buy it myself. Consumerism has gotten so out of hand that gift gifting has lost its luster. Thank you for sharing your experience with this community.

This sounds good! I am already spending little. So I am considering to try no buy 2025. How you decide what is really a need? For example I have 10 year old winter boots. Last winter I noticed that boots did not resist water so good. And boots look worn out. I have another winter shoes but not same kind of walking shoes. Where I live, winter weather changes a lot from very cold and lots of snow to rain. So good winter boots are essential. I have 4 pair of winter shoes: 1 for icy roads, 1 made wool for cold but dry weather, 1 walking boots that has resist water (not anymore) and one pair of boots for snow and forest walking. So I don't have neat nice looking town shoes for walking that resist water. Maeby it is time to buy winter shoes 😂 I have been thinking 2 winter that I might need 1 neat nice looking water resistant winter shoes, but still I have wear the old ones... Or I usually don't buy books, but like to read. Last month I found books that costs 3,50 each and about interesting topics, so I bought those books. Books are not esential, but good book can give a lot of joy and knowledge. I know that those books are not in the library, so I bought them...
@TidywithSPARK18 күн бұрын
Love this comment and question. I just posted a new video on a no buy challenge success guide. It will definitely help with your questions of discerning what to and what not to buy. kzbin.info/www/bejne/hZ2VZ3R5g8tsaas I also have a resource you can grab too. tidywithspark.com/no-buy-success-guide-yt/ As far as books go, I consider them an investment. If you tried getting them at the library and they aren't available, spending a few dollars to invest in education makes sense when it aligns with your personal values. Keep up the good work! And thanks for being here.
@paularuotsalainen895418 күн бұрын
@TidywithSPARK Thank you for your answer! I will look videos you recommended. I have been confused how anyone can live no buy year or many years, because I thought they could only buy food. If there is possible to buy new clothes when old ones are broken or worn out, it is doable. I usually bring my old clothes to my cottage. Those clothes are old and so worn out that I don't want to use them in the city. My cottage is in the middle of the forest in the country side, so there is no need to have good clothes. Only one good clothes for going to the shop and traveling home. We have been laughing with my cottage neighbors because we all have so old clothes there. I have one shirt from 1960. My father used it and I have used it, now my son use it when he is at the cottage 😂 Some buttons are loose and fabric is so worn out that it is not possible to sew new buttons. It is still good shirt when painting or cutting trees in the forest...😂

Any tips for those of us who coupon? I usually coupon for items I use , detergent ..toilet paper etc
@TidywithSPARK18 күн бұрын
Great question! What I've found with couponing is that you end up buying and accumulating extras that you don't want or need just to get the few items that you want. Also because of buying in bulk you end up storing the items in your home contributing to clutter. If you're using coupons to get what you need, this is a smart and savvy way to be a conscious consumer, but otherwise, it may not be beneficial if you're trying to keep clutter at bay and expenses low.

It's not that it's unhealthy. Only you can determine that. But it's more about living mindfully and buying what you need. If you have duplicates, it likely means you're only using one at a time, so it's natural to question whether you need both.

I do have to laugh at the way Americans pronounce herb though! I never understand why you don’t pronounce the h!! Borrowers - you rarely get items back, or they're damaged. Borrowers are leeches many times to further themselves. Trading, yes but always borrowing - no. I end up telling those users I don't have the item as the relationship becomes one way and out of balance. Building community sounds manipulative and planning how you can use your neighbor. Nope!

To US residents: Trump's tariffs will make the cost of everything skyrocket here the further America is into his presidency. So I would respectfully encourage Americans to put off this 2025 no buy year until 2026. You don't want to hit 2026 with a need to buy new items that are important for your household.
@TidywithSPARK23 күн бұрын
Thanks for this perspective. No buy is for things that you really don't need so that clutter is minimized. The point isn't to buy nothing. Rather it's to stop overconsumption, whatever that means for you.
