1. Don't be too closely aligned with your company 2. Diversify your investments 3. Buy back time (pay others for menial tasks) 4. Your spouse will not be with you forever 5. Health is more important than wealth 6. Rent expensive toys before buying 7. Wished they had done it now versus waiting 8. Wished had reconnected with old friends 9. Wished they had thought about time of each day and fill with joy and purpose. 10. Wished they had said no more often.

I took the idea about renting expensive toys and experiences many years ago, the roadster, the hot tub, the camper can. Best to keep your money for what you love and use it to retire earlier. Quite an important one.

I recommend diversifying your investments by considering stocks alongside real estate. During a recession, there are potential buying opportunities in the stock market if approached cautiously. Additionally, market volatility can offer short-term buying and selling opportunities. However, please note that this is not financial advice. It's important to be proactive in investing as cash may not be the most advantageous option during these times.

It's often true that people underestimate the importance of financial advisors until they feel the negative effects of emotional decision-making. I remember a few summers ago, after a tough divorce, when I needed a boost for my struggling business. I researched and found a licensed advisor who diligently helped grow my reserves despite inflation. Consequently, my reserves increased from $375k to around $650k.

100% agree. Only by something you are going to use all the time. People fantasize about second homes and big toys, but between hectic retirement schedules with family and friends, or health issues, they often don't get to use them as much as they would like. So they outlay tons of money to buy these things, rarely use them, and then have to take it in the shorts when they sell them or pay commissions. Keep your life very simple and retirement.

When we started to do international travel in retirement my mother-in-law lamented that was what she wanted to do, but her husband wanted to do that "someday" but not now. Then he died and she had health issues, so she can't do the travel. She said her definition of "someday: is "the day after never". He was also cheap since he wanted to preserve their investments, now she has RMDs she does not need and pays more taxes because of them.

"Your stuff can own you vs. you owning your stuff". Wisdom. I just turned 50 and moved to a new home, new town after a long stint in one house. The amount of shit owning me that I had accumulated felt overwhelming. During the move I got rid of so much stuff and the process keeps going. Every single time I give away or sell something I had previously acquired thinking it would make my life better, I feel lighter and happier. Being a car nut and petrol head since baby, cars have been my weakness and it's been just recently I realised there's a point after which the passion becomes a burden. Walking into the garage and feeling like shit, man, what have you done, you know something's wrong... Love your grounded wisdom, great content, no bs, no clickbaits. Thank you.

All good points, especially the vacation home. An elderly relative has a lake cabin where we've vacationed for the past 40 some years and now they're too old to get up there so it's just me and my wife and it became clear this past summer that it's too much work for just one or two people. Between getting the boat ready, replacing and charging the batteries, launching the boat, hooking up the electricity to the boat lift, the canopy, the cleaning, the house repairs, even the cooking and dishes is more significant without more people to help shoulder the load. Another eye opener is that it's really difficult to get anything done up there these days for larger maintenance items like painting, roofing and forget vehicle repairs without a 2 week wait. The blower on my truck's HVAC system stopped working while I was in the midst of everything else while it was in the mid 90's with super high humidity. I was lucky because I had brought my multi-meter and wire stripper/crimper for a boat repair so I was able to diagnose it as the blower motor resistor and make the repair myself including replacing the burned out wiring harness all while parked on the 30° incline driveway...good times! My relatives are going to sell the cabin once one of the passes for the step up in cost basis which is disappointing because they always said they'd pass it on to me, even using this to talk me out of buying a small lake home in my home town a decade or so ago when they were far more affordable, lol. Clearly it's a good choice to sell as it's far too much for me to manage 2 properties and I thought I could get a smaller lake cabin in the same area but those are all long gone, torn down and huge monstrosities built in their place. So I'm going to look for a lake home in my home town again, while not as nice as up North, good enough and a lot easier to care for one property, easier to find help around here not too mention much closer to good quality health care and emergency services which has been an issue up there.

My original retirement plan was to retire at 67, work part-time, and save money. However, high prices for everything have severely affected my plan. I'm concerned if people who went through the 2008 financial crisis had an easier time than I am having now. The stock market is worrying me as my income has decreased, and I fear I won't have enough savings for retirement since I can't contribute as much as before.

Agreed, the role of advisors can only be overlooked, but not denied. I remember in early 2020, during covid-outbreak, my portfolio worth around 300k took a slight fall, apparently due to the pandemic crash, at once I consulted an advisor in order to avoid panic-selling. As of today, my account has yielded big fat yields, and leverages on 7-figure, only cos I delegate my excesses right.

As you say, everyone’s situation is different. In the case of my wife and I we had a vacant lot that included a clubhouse that we could sleep in and a slip on a dock. My dad bought me a cheap sailboat, which is an awesome addition. During the housing market collapse in 2009 and 10 I was looking at 2 x 4 futures And told my wife that if we were ever going to build our vacation house now would be the time. Labor was cheap material was cheap and in total we have about half a million invested in the house and it’s now appraised at about 2 million. Both of our kids use it on and off and it has become the gathering place for the entire clan from across the country for the holidays so a great addition to the entire extended family as well as ourselves. We could rent it out through Airbnb or VRBO, but choose not to because the expenses aren’t terribly high. We could in the future but you have to be aware of the extra wear and tear on the house.

My wife said she wish I worked more hours during my working years instead of just 48 hrs a week so we’d have a bigger nest egg. My wife said she wished I didn’t retire so soon she said 72 was way too early because I still had reasonably good health and could collect full social security. My wife said I spent too much time exercising because it might make me out live our savings and she hadn’t figured that into her financial plan she said it was only for me to have a life expectancy of 75. My wife said with me retiring so young that she might have to cut back on my meals , well it’s that or her stopping getting manicures and pedicures and she said that’s out of the question. My wife said when I need something to help if I start having bladder issues that I’ll have to use old towel because big people diapers are way too expensive just to throw them in the trash. Well anyway my wife lucky for me has things pretty much figured out.

Unless you are very wealthy, don't get a vacation home unless you have a lot of money & you are realistically going to use it A LOT. My parents had one that was in a lake community that was 1.5 hours away. It was such a money trap PLUS my mother was a control freak & wouldn't let us 4 kids use the house unless my parents were available "in case there was a problem" with turning the water on & off, draining the water, etc. - yet we all had homes of our own, so it's not like we weren't aware of responsibilities that needed to be taken care of. They had the house about 40+ years & it was hardly used because of my crazy controlling mother. The money spent on taxes & annual lake fees would have been a nice nest egg alone. We kids were after them to sell it for years because no one was using it, but my dad had an emotional attachment to it bc he built it. I even had them see a financial advisor & he advised to sell the lake house as it would eat into their retirement money. Did they listen? No. They finally sold it bc my mom had serious cancer at 85 years old & they basically made no money on it. It was such a relief for us 4 adult kids that they sold it. It's really a shame my parents spent so much time & money on a showpiece house that was hardly used. When I suggested that they rent it to help psy for it, my mom went crazy at the thought if strangers in her house. The whole situation was insane. Don't do this to yourself or kids. Rent a vrbo or ab&b & stay away from vacation homes.

And I agree with the buying stuff, I always wanted a classic benz , so I got one. It wasn't as great to own, became a burden, costly , wasn't even very comfortable .
