Not harsh religious practices. He actually loves us. He showed it by his death. Well get born again.. if your born again you can't get any closer to God s presence he will move to the inside and you become the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus you become equal to Jesus himself... if you mean you want to feel his presence then you need to repent because the spiritual realm can't be accessed by yoir 5 physical senses.. but faith can be felt by the 5 senses but faith doesn't make the spiritual realm real its real whether you believe it or not. But for us as believers we also suffer like those who do not believe(yet the other part of that suffering is different). Jesus said: "This world will give you tribulations, but take heart, I've overcome the world." Jesus himself when he came in the world, he suffered all his Life, and he never said that those who believed in him will not suffer. In fact, it is to expect. But, what he promised is that in all this, he will be there and we will always find peace and joy in him, because he overcame. And it's the faith in his victory that he gave to all who believed in him that allows us to stand firm through any hardship.

So true. Jesus is so good. He said that we should rejoice and shout for joy when we experience trials not because we are promised an easy life but because we are under the blessing of God.
