My parents once told me they had to cut my guitar lessons 'cause I wasn't getting any better, no matter how much time had passed and I felt really bad and disappointed so I told them that they're wrong and started practicing more and more, every single day of the week. Here I am, seven years later having a band and going to release our first album soon! Every time I hear about someone that gave up I just feel bad man..you just have to keep practicing and it will pay off! Also, can we just appreciate how rad the solo at the end is? "Talent" is a mindset. If you can teach yourself the right mindset, you can get good at anything
@jgdooley2003
@jgdooley2003 2 жыл бұрын
As a modestly successful singer guitarist I have often been accused of having this mysterious thing called talent. Yes there is some talent involved like having a decent set of flexible, arthritis free hands, something not to be taken for granted at 63 yrs of age, and a good musical ear; but the main ingredient of a musical ability is playing often and in company of fellow musicians who can teach you a lot and help you hone your skills over time. Irish musical sessions, happening informally and often spontaneously in Irish pubs, were the stuff of my childhood and helped powerfully to develop my musical skills.

@@zirriahmoonxx3426 hey man, Honestly I've been getting way better, what I did was set a time for practice 4 hours everyday, I start d by practicing the spidercrawl for hours, just improving accuracy and speed, then I went on to try and improve my theory and getting out of the box scale, I watched Paul Davids, he really taught me some good information on using scales and chords together in music and learning scales has opened my eyes to songs I've been learning, also learn the chromatic scale it's so worth it. Right now I'm learning some classical since it's different and could definitely help me improve my accuracy and build finger picking skills, just do what you think fits you best and start small, don't be afraid to explore different genres either they really helped me, blues especially, it uses theory in its music which really stands out when you learn it, hope you find what you're looking for, been practicing hard for the past month or two.

I’m currently watching this right now at the brink of tears from frustration. My dad bought me a guitar for my birthday during February, it’s currently August and so far I feel like I’ve progressed to basically nothing. In general, when it comes to picking up new skills and such, I’m almost never consistent when it comes to learning. I don’t know why I’m like this, and for once in my life I actually want to be good at something, even if it’s just a simple hobby. I burn out too easily, and that’s something I hate about myself. As of right now, I really only know the basics which are the E minor and E major chord. I’m attempting A minor but I’m failing miserably at it. Even the simplest of chords I should be able to play by now are extremely difficult. I just wish I could learn at the same pace as other people, and by being self-taught I have no idea what the fuck I’m doing.
@easternsteel8431
@easternsteel8431 7 ай бұрын
I understand the feeling of burn out all too well lol. Part of what helps me in continuing on is not just learning pure theory, but also learning, at the very least, small portions of songs I like to help entertain myself while I’m learning, whether through tabs or theory. Learning guitar is a journey and there’s no rush. Just keep at it and play whatever has you picking up the guitar in the first place and you’ll see yourself improving if you stay consistent!

Robert Greene's book Mastery has impacted my life more than any other piece of media I've ever consumed. It talks about the value of practice, the 10'000 hour rule and gives many examples, from Einstein to Mozart, debunking every myth about born, innate "talent" we've ever been taught. A few years ago I got my daughter a keyboard for Christmas and within five day we were both playing full Beethoven sonatas. Skipped right past marry has a little lamb and Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. All three of us (including a sixteen year old) have jobs in the arts and I take credit for none of it. My only regret is I didn't discover the value of practice till my 40s. The moment we collectively dismiss the myth of "talent" as a society we enter a 2nd Renaissance!

Honestly, whether you have been playing for 5 months or 5 years, think back to when your fingers were hurting by simply fretting. Look back to when you couldnt keep a strum pattern going. Look back to when you couldn't alternate pick. Look back to when you were finally able to play your first riff decently. You're doing great. You and I compare ourselves to those professional guitarists that inspired us to learn the guitar. It sucks doing that to ourselves, but, as long as we continue on practicing and learning, we'll eventually reach that love. For me, I forget that some of these brilliant guitarists have been playing since their middle school years, if not younger, being able to practice up to 8 hours a day. I didn't buy my first guitar until I was 19 and working 8 hours a day. I wish you all the best and let's all continue to practice and jam out with other musicians when given the chance.

I have been playing guitar for decades. I’ve been in bands... But when I go into a music store, I will never pick up a guitar and plug it into an amp and try an amp or guitar after hearing kids Not old enough to shave yet in music stores that sound like Joe Satriani or Steve Vai. they make me question whether or not I even know how to play the guitar. Now I know how stunned Clapton and Townsend felt when they went to see some new guy called Jimi Hendrix for the first time.I will never forget the look on Townsend’s face when he described how he felt after seeing Hendrix for the first time. He stood there with that thousand yard stare you see in Vietnam vets eyes , and then he snapped out of the stare into a chuckle. and he said the most difficult part of seeing Hendrix was, that the who had to go on after Hendrix .. I can’t even imagine what that must of been like to have to perform after Hendrix was the warm-up band. Can you imagine. Lighting is Guitar on fire, and knocking his marshals over, and then your band has to go on after that..

You will probably never see this, but this has really helped me out. I was sitting here giving up on my dreams of being in at least a semi big band and I saw this. I have been playing for almost four years and have gotten pretty good for a thirteen year old. But I think I met the best skill I could in guitar. I cant really play fast or do anything really impressive but I had feel. And I believe that if you have that feel it dosent matter how fast you can play or how many fancy guitar tricks you know. And if you truly enjoy it, you can go far. But I kinda lost that feel. I was taking guitar lessons to try and improve and I just felt pressured to play and improve in guitar and that kinda ruined it for me. I had no joy in guitar, I would only really play it if I was practising for lessons or doing lessons. So I stopped doing lessons and that made me feel a lot better about guitar. But my dad was not happy I quit. He didnt argue with me or anything, he just kinda hinted that I wont be able to improve without them. I am almost completely taught with youtube videos and stuff so I was confident that I could still improve on my own. But I didnt. And a couple of weeks past and I was just sad and angry. Today I had a long talk about it and I just broke down when we got home. But seeing this gave me some more confidence that I can (maybe) still improve without needing to take these lessons. Now I am sitting here crying writing this comment, and I just wanted you to know that you helped me out a lot. Music is the only thing that makes me truly happy. Thanks.

your story is similar to mine. i started guitar when i was 8 after my parents persisted for me to pick up a hobby, and I've been taking lessons every thursday since then. it's been five years since I've started lessons, and I've barely accomplished anything in that span of time because of my lack of motivation as well as other mental factors. pretty much, i only got to learn the basics of guitar and learn a few chords at maximum. it sucks when i recall how much time i could have spent practicing, over the years. however, I've recently picked up my guitar a couple months ago after being inspired by a band, and since then, I've learned and memorized three new songs, as well as memorized the pentatonic scale, and learned how to write sheet music! a lot can happen in a short span of time if you dedicate time and effort into accomplishing your goals, and I'm happy to say that I'm on my way to achieving greater things. :) and i hope you find your motivation, too.

Ha... you sound like me at 13... Bro, feel is important. Lots of fast shreddy players have too little feel... but you also need the skills. What you need is a teacher to show you TECHNIQUE... all those blistering hard things??? Yeah...big secret is, they aint that hard...you just need the KEYS that unlock them! Its the little technique you employ to make a hard thing easy. Like sweep picking... took me TEN DAMN YEARS to learn to sweep pick...know why? I was doing it DEAD WRONG for years... I had incorporated PISS POOR technique and committed it into muscle memory. Once it was explained to me PROPERLY (by an old jazz player actually....weird) I was melting arpeggios like Yngwie... Broaden your musical base, listen to more players, and seek out those who are BETTER than you and stick by their side absorbing everything they know. Once you've done that, the student becomes the master and you can move on to a more sophisticated teacher. It comes with time young homie... but TECHNIQUE is so huge... that and practicing enough. Add one skill per week and you'll be kicking arse soon. (for example, downward pick angle and edge picking for 6 note per string phrases, or learning a few modes)...Damn dude... I think guys like you need their own KZbin channel. Like, a channel solely dedicated to intermediate players who need to get over that hump to advanced... maybe Ill go buy a camera.

for a few years, one of my part time jobs was repairing broken orchestra and band instruments for an instrument rental company, last year i made the decision to start my own guitar company and make lutherie a full time career - i dont have any dependent children or serious financial responsibilities, and i have previous small business experience, so im ready to fall flat on my face if thats how it pans out - but i have too many ideas about guitar innovations to not at least make a stab at this.. im keenly aware that the custom guitar/lutherie industry is a mighty small pond and there are some mighty big fish already in there - so its nice to hear encouragement...

While I appreciate the videos you make that highlight your sense of humor, I think I appreciate your pep talks even more, man. I’ve been spending so much more time with my instrument recently, and I’ve been approaching making music with much more discipline and a sense of respect for the craft than I did when I first started out. You’ve been a part of that shift in mindset. Thank you 🙏🏼

I think what @tomosoos means is that for many guitarists competition and being better than other people is what fuels them, when in reality the most beautiful thing about music and guitar playing is in how it allows artistic expression. So stop comparing yourself and just create something you love

I would disagree. They are way better than most beginner bands. They can actually keep a beat and play pretty tight together

Music is art. What art is good is purely an opinion. Therefore, anyone who tells you you suck doesn't even know what art is or even that music is an art form. Basically this means they suck at life.

Aylbdr Madison If musician B can execute every technique properly that musician A can, it follows that musician B is objectively more capable with the instrument than musician A is. In the context of this video, sucking most likely refers to technical ability rather than artistic expression (which cannot be objectively evaluated). In the framing of your comment, I agree that an artist cannot suck at art. I know you were just saying some kind words, but I think this is a distinction that musicians should be aware of.

I actually needed this today. After spending some time with some incredible guitarists last week I felt like I was outclassed or didn't deserve to be there. All the thousands of hours I practice and I wasnt any closer to being able to hang with the big boys. I feel kinda ashamed to admit I haven't touched my guitar since. Think I'll go practice now though. Thanks man. ;D

Thanks for the amazing message. I started playing bass when I was 6. That was 34 years ago. I started playing guitar at 16. I played many brass, string, and woodwind instruments. None of which I was even remotely good at. I would practice my trumpet for 4 to 5 hours a day. Later I played in orchestras, bands, marching bands, bugle corps, and many more. Music became my life. How did I get good? I NEVER GIVE UP! Practice, study, and practice again. You will get it!

Discovered your channel during covid lockdown last year! since then I've been binge watching all of your content whatever pops I'll watch it. Now watching this vid reminds me that I quit playing after I finished high school since I could never play sweet child of mine lol ffwd to 2021 I'm much older and wiser wanting to buy a guitar and pickup where I left of. Watching your content has inspired me to stick with it this time around so....Thank you!
