Free work is great. Say yes. You help others and less pressure as you get more time to complete the work. Essential experience you cannot get elsewhere. It helps everyone out. Even help charity (but not published for the company or online as it's about not getting favourable work from the work I do).

Regarding the question of 'Free Work', I regularly ask myself the question 'Am I getting more out of this then I'm putting in?' If the answer is 'yes' then its worth doing. If you are learning/growing whilst working for free then its fine. If you feel you already have the experience/skill/knowledge and no one is benefiting from it then you are being taken advantage of

If you're an artist, you will never survive by saying yes to all the free work that people want you to do. A lot of people just assume that it must be easy to make beautiful masterpieces, but that's not true. They might feel that just because your work is made mostly with time, effort, careful thought and years of experience (all intangible things) that it shouldn't cost any money. Don't let them rip you off. Have the confidence to know what your work is worth, and don't accept anything lower.

Might be a little late commenting on this but SAY YES TO FREE WORK - that is how you gain experience, allow yourself to make mistakes (and learn) and get to know the real world! Build up your connections and expand your network, see which field works best for you with little damage to your portfolio (if its for free they usually dont rattle you out to potential clients, but to your face maybe...) I have learned so much via providing my time and effort and i have learn so much and gained much more. I am still humbled and ready to learn - though i do charge for my services now, I am always ready to offer my services FOC if there is reaskn too. Remember not all free work is going yield high returns (or any) but good or bad there is always a learning opportunity.

I think saying Yes is very important to changing your path. Once I started spreading my wings to actually push myself. I learned that no matter how ridiculous something was that I thought I would like to do or try, I would just say yes and try it. I then seen it doesn't hurt much when you fail and your more excited cause you tried. So yes lol say yes!

Yes, free work is absolutely a great way to get noticed and to get some experience. If you will go only for paid projects from day one, you will have a very hard time getting there. But if you really enjoy what you are doing you won't mind doing it for free in the beginning. :)

Free work is part of the creative process, whether it's acting, musician photographer, etc. It gives you the chance to learn your craft without the pressure of payment. It's some poor slob trying to make his first movie and you are some poor slob learning to be an actor, if you both fail it's okay because there is only the investment of time. Besides, those no-pay jobs are the best "war stories". The only time you shouldn't do unpaid work is, if it's a large corporation wanting something for nothing and demanding all of your creative copyright.
