I work in IT as a network engineer, with long hours, and sometimes it feels like I don’t have a social life. But seeing you go through what seems like 10 times worse and still manage to find time for the gym and friends has been inspiring. You push through things, and I really admire that about you.

Dr. Shaun, please don't lose that ability to give bad news. A lot of patients know the diagnosis before you tell them, especially with cancer. A friend and my aunt both had terminal cancer and no doctor would say the words. My friend's ER doctor had to tell after 4 weeks of trying to see her because her Hemo oncologist would not face her. My aunt connected me for out of state to read her results. She knew she had stage 4 lung cancer and when she went to get her results from the doctor. He refused to see her and had his nurse tell her to go home and a doctor will call you. No mention of cancer. She gets and email from a cancer center to schedule an appointment. Please don't be one of them. Your a good doctor. Stay positive. 😊

You also have to remember that Shaun and many of the younger generation that is posting here in YT and other social media are VERY young in their years as doctors (hence the residency). The joy, the eagerness, and the enthusiasm is widespread and awesome to see, but healthcare takes it's toll. Those older docs are jaded not because they want to, but because of the mental and physical toll being a doctor takes and over the many years, it's rough. I'm not a doctor, but I'm 7 ears a nurse (+2 more now being an NP), and I remember being so excited and enjoying my time early on as a nurse. By the time 5 years hit (which was through covid), that "passion" to care of others slowly dwindled because of the extras that come with taking care of others whether it be colleagues, the disease, persona life stuff, insurance, everything and anything. Regardless, I have much respect to all med students, future docs, resident docs, and older docs as I could never do it, or want to be one either.
@sillyz95783 ай бұрын
I could never be a doctor. I have much respect for all of you. I had to see a neuro for potential MS diagnosis and I got the opportunity to work with a resident as well as primary specialist. I watch your vlogs every now and then, I love seeing "the life of *insert medical profession here*" vlogs. I really appreciate how in this video you stressed the importance of empathy and kindness. I'm a medical assistant and I have worked many specialties with various types of people, and there is an overflowing handful of doctors, nurses, midwives, nurse practitioners, medical assistants, medical receptionists that don't have these two KEY qualities. Its saddening to see and watch. I always imagine my disabled mother being talked to and treated how some of these medical professionals do and it breaks me but it also motivates me to do better and be better. Thank you again for stressing that. Keep doing what you do and being true to you and your patients. You will go far!

Although I am still a med 1 student, I am a huge procrastinator, but I am very passionate. So, I have learned from your channel to maintain my physical health and think optimistically even during hard times. I see many socially introverted people, and I am part of them in some way. But I know how important being social is to patient care. So, thanks to your channel, I have been trying to have a more social experience throughout medical school so that I feel confident enough in front of patients to discuss fully what concerns their care. Our ethics doctor was also very passionate in his late 60s, & much of what he taught us a month ago, you have proved throughout these vlogs. I never thought doctors remained after hours without extra pay, & I also never thought about staying after work to have a final round to go and discuss any final worries that the patients may have before going back home. But, with your channel, the channel of Violin MD, & our ethics doctor, I have uncovered way more truth behind the practice of medicine. Despite it seeming exhausting, I see the beauty in doing so & being one of the primary references for nurses while they perform their patient care. You give me so much hope & I am very inspired by your mindset and work ethic.

@@mbrighton1802hi there, if you don’t mind answering, I agree with the sentiment that healthcare seems like customer service, but I often hear that it’s been this way “for some time”. For reference, I’m a medical assistant in a clinic and I can 100% see the resemblance to my previous roles in customer service (eg provider has little control over her schedule and often times gets double booked, or having to navigate insurance). Honestly, I don't really know how US healthcare system works but I can't fully agree normalising this idea that in order to be a doctor you have to accept working 12-15h/day. I mean that even in my country residents work 80h/week even if they're supposed to work 38h/week, but doctors more than anyone should know the impact of stress on the mind and body, up to a cellular level. So patients supposed to be taken care of by stressed doctors is a pillar of this society I don't really comprehend, especially in a country like yours where you have to spend most of your life paying back college debt. Seeing doctors as martyrs instead of workers is not my ideal, I would be extremely pissed off

I know medicine is competitive and alll and yall worked hard and stuff but there is literally 2 spots for this mayo gen surg APP fellowship PER YEAR we all work hard in surgery and officially, its really subjective if one type of provider is better than the other one. but more is always merrier why argue about one type of provider being better because of "more training" when I literally always demand to see atleast two specialists???
