Almost a year later and this is my most viewed video! I'm so glad to know this is reaching the right people and helping those who were in the same place that I was in. Multiple factors have caused me to step away from making videos here, I really miss it though and hope to be back soon!

Getting into a musical theater program is as hard as getting into an Ivy League college - acceptance is about 1-2%. It’s slightly higher for audition programs like acting and music but it’s still less than 5% for most schools. Most programs accept 12-20 people per class. And most get hundreds of prescreen submissions every year. And yes, not getting into a college performing arts is not the end of the world. It doesn’t ensure success. There are lots of people from wonderful BFA programs that really don’t make their living performing. They end up private coaches, working for studios, working for schools, working behind the scenes or in management. And there are also a lot of people who work who didn’t go to school for this. Take child actors who grow up in the business, middle aged people who find theater that needs people to play mature roles….This is a results oriented profession. As long as you can produce results you can work. This is an excellent video for everyone who has been looked down on, rejected, kicked in the teeth by the audition process. Thank you for your candor and insight.

As someone who was rejected from every single musical theatre program and was absolutely crushed, this helped me so much. I've been struggling with feelings that I wasn't talented or good enough ever since. I'm flying out to college tomorrow where I will be studying musical theatre since there was no audition requirement and I have been extremely nervous that in the long run, the fact that I will have gone to a school that isn't extremely well-known in the musical theatre industry will hurt my chances of getting jobs in the future. My dream is to be on Broadway and I've been comparing myself to different Broadway actors who went to competitive and prestigious schools. Thank you for this!

I’m currently a senior in high school and I’ve dreamt of being in theatre since I was little. I was rejected from every MT program. I didn’t even make it past the first round and hurt me and my self-esteem so much. What you said about seeing other peoples success and comparing it to your own is so true. I still want to do theatre but now I have new interests and everything will be okay. Everything you said was spot on. Thank you, this video seriously helped me more than you could imagine. 💕

Gosh, I really needed this... I am very late to the Musical Theatre scene. I have no formal training in singing or dance, but I have a little experience with acting (which I was also late to the party in). I fell in love with the art form and auditioned for the BFA Musical Theatre program at my top college choice. A couple of weeks ago, I found out that I wasn't accepted into the program, but would be happily accepted into the BA Theatre program. So, I plan to major with a BA in Theatre if everything works out. I felt really down about not being accepted though, and thought that was the end of my dreams. But you're totally right; training is much more important than college. If you happen to get that kind of training in college, great! But if you don't, it isn't the end of the world. So, I just wanted to say many thanks for that reminder :)

I'm so sorry to hear that. I'm sure you'll be able to get great training in a BA, I did! It's all about what you put into it!

Thank you for sharing this and being so open about this topic. I always hear from people how everything always works out for them. And at the moment I don’t know what will work out for me but that is fine.

Hi! I applied to my dream college for a BFA in musical theatre. I got accepted for a BFA in acting. They are very similar but for some reason I am upset. I don’t know what to do. Any advice?

Hey there! First off, congrats on getting accepted at your dream school! I can totally understand why you’re feeling upset - people often chalk up getting a BFA in MT and it’s made a lot of think that’s the only degree we need to be a professional. But getting a BFA in Acting doesn’t mean you can’t be an MT performer or weren’t “good enough” for an MT program. It’s just a different type of training - and training is the most important aspect! Remember that even in MT, it’s still about the acting. We act through song and dance, but the foundation has to be the acting. Even though your degree will be Acting, you can always take voice lessons independently! (That’s what I do!). You’re allowed to be an MT performer no matter what degree you got! Remember that your college program should fit you - not the other way around. I hope this helped and lifted your spirits a little! I make a lot of TikTok’s about this too!

I actually only auditioned for one school which was the school I ended up attending. I auditioned for the MT program my senior year of high school and my freshman year of college (rejected both times). I also did one other prescreen for a different college
