I just got rejected for Miss Hannigan in my school’s production of Annie Jr when I had my heart set on it. 😢 The person who got her was a person who didn’t even want to be Miss Hannigan. Thank you for this video.

I'm never on the stage but I do the pit orchestra for my high school musicals and boy is there often drama with kids not getting the role they wanted. this past year, the senior that was 'the theatre kid' that was an amazing singer who everyone thought would get the lead didn't even get a singing part. she quit the show. these are the moments when I'm glad to just sit in the pit orchestra and play my little violin parts

@@cayleejoyes, sorry this has nothing to do with the comment but I just wanted your opinion. I’m in a production of Into The Woods Jr at a local theatre. It's for 2nd through 5th graders, with me, being the oldest there. The company makes money from actors paying money to be in the musical. So the more you come, the better roles you get. My friend who has a lovely singing voice, has been in shows there many times, and has now for this show brought 4 friends (including me) is obviously going to get the part she wants. While me, someone who also has a fantastic voice, will get bad roles because it's my first time there. This is kind of how there works. I auditioned (they had us sing Happy Birthday because there is 2nd graders) and did it perfectly, showcasing my range that is up to C6. My friend also did it great, we both showed our strengths, hers having lots of depth in her voice, mine being very high, great vibrato, and belting it out. Anyways, 7 days later, get our roles back. And on the cast list, my friend gets Cinderella (what we both auditioned for), and I get Rapunzels Prince. This is extremely surprising to me, because Rapunzels Prince is meant for a boy tenor. While me, a girly girl whose a Soprano. (showcased in my audition) The person who casted us, the director, had her mom record our auditions and her look at them later. This just goes to show that the director didn't even have to look at all of them to cast, she could've just casted based on what she saw from other shows people were in, then looked and cast the leftover roles after. My mother texted the director, confused as to why a soprano girl was casted as a tenor man. She texted a video of me singing the lowest I can go, the video being not as low as the prince does. She texts that it could be an octave higher or so. I was very upset and embarrassed, my friend thought I would get Cinderella or Baker’s Wife and that she would get Little Red or Jack. I’m really disappointed and not happy that I will have to play a boy. My favorite color is literally pink and I am not comfortable having to be the opposite gender, fantasizing about marrying a girl. My singing teacher says that this is weird because they usually ask you if you are comfortable playing the opposite gender and that she will work in Agony with me. What should I do? Because this is not looking good for me. I already practiced Cinderellas song for weeks incase I got it because me being the oldest I thought that was a possibility, but realizing how this company works. It no longer is. The director even said in her text “Hello, sorry, me and Agatha were cleaning up after rehearsal and realized you were not there. We could definitely switch you to a different cast but the role would not be as big as Rapunzels Prince. We could still put the ocative higher if the ocative is uoud main concern. Super upset, I chose to keep the role of Rapunzels Prince to not risk being Milky White, stepsisters or ensemble.

@@katiecroal2528 thank you for reaching out! Those "Pay to Play" theatres can be really difficult to work with if you feel that casting is largely based on $$ rather than skill. I always hope that it's a situation where everyone pays the same amount to be involved and therefore has an equal shot during auditions, but I know this just depends on who is in charge. My primary concern here is that you were cast as the opposite gender without being asked first. I have done a lot of gender-swapped casting but I always ask actors beforehand to make sure they're comfortable with it. If you choose to keep the role, although I would understand if you chose not to, here would be my advice: -The prince is a goofy ridiculous role. He isn't in love with Rapunzel, he's in love with himself. The interactions between him and Rapunzel are purely about him looking "princely", so I would not feel as if you have to lean into the idea that he wants to marry Rapunzel/is in love with her. His primary love story is with himself! You have an opportunity to really steal some scenes with this character, especially with "Agony" whic his almost always everyone's favorite song from the show because it is hilarious. Commit to being the biggest most obscene character for this role and it will be impossible not to have fun with it. This is also an opportunity to show that you're an actress with range, which may bode well for future auditions. In the future, if you choose to work with this company again, I would make it clear what you're comfortable accepting/not accepting, although, again, they should have consulted you ahead of time. Theater is my dream. Its what I want to do with my life, my best friend has other plans. In out school play, I had my heart set on being this one character, and in the end, my name was 3rd to last on the cast list whils my best friend got a very big part. I was so jealous and I cried secretly at home for months. I showed up to every rehearsals and filled in for so many parts while the actors/actresses were absent, and I think my director is noticing how much better I am than she thought, so fingers crossed from the musical, and wish me luck for no more tears

I remember I auditioned for a regional production of matilda I made to three rounds and was cut. But then another play came up, and I got the part , I did like four plays at that theater, making some of my best friends, and then another theater did matilda. I tried out and got a part, not what I wanted ( but I was able to make some of the costumes). I was just happy to do matilda , I know not everyone will benefit how I did, but yeah, that's my story

So the cast list for mean girls (my favorite musical!!!!) just came out and I’m really disappointed. I auditioned for Karen, and I’m perfect for the part. I look like her, I sound like her, and I can sing her songs really good. But the cast list just came out and I find my name next to…..Kevin g. I know I should be grateful for the part, I was excited to sing this year. Last year I was ensemble, so I couldn’t show off my singing, and I was excited this year because if I got the part I would be able to you know, have fun singing. Also Kevin g is a really embarrassing part I have no idea why the teacher casted me as him I cannot rap for my life I’m just sad because I probably will never be in this musical and it was my dream to be Karen or Gretchen.
@cayleejo
@cayleejo 6 ай бұрын
I’m going to throw this out here…. The role of Kevin G requires more enthusiasm than either Karen or Gretchen! It may not be as “glamorous” of a part but I bet your director feels you can pull off this role that requires a TON of characterization and energy! If you pull this off you are REALLY showing them how versatile you are. This is also a super funny role and you can easily steal every scene you’re in. You are completely justified in being bummed, but you have an opportunity to really make an impact with this role. Break a leg!

Ok heres my story. im doing mean girls jr at my school (yes im old enoight to be on yt im 13) so anyway ive been in this show twice already. the first time i did it a was sonja, and then the next i was gretchen. i was very confident i would get a good role, and so was all my friends. so anyway, i walked into the auditon and sang very well. i asked for regina or gretchen. i was upset at first when i wasn't a callback for gretchen, which i wanted, but was happy when i got a karen call back. i did great at callbacks and i was sure id get a good part. im fit for karen, im medium height, blonde, and can easily act dumb. so we get the cast list and i dont see my name until the very bottom- next to mathletes moderatpr. i dont want to be greedy or anything because im happy, i get lines,, its just i thought id do better. the worst part though, was that our cady, gretchen, and karen are all in sixth grade. Im just upset because i went from ensmble to lead and flying back down to ensmble.can you give some advice please?

Sorry I know this is late but the biggest thing that helped me was thinking about things in the sense of not who is best, but whos character fits the vision, like a puzzle! Never take things like that as your skills, many takes on characters exist and who knows what they were looking for! I bet you are still a great actor/singer, and this isn't about you, this is about how the directors see the show coming together, this isn't ranking who is the best actors, it's about what they want, so just do your best and be honest! I hope the production is going well and sorry this is so late lol

I’ve been doing theatre since kindergarten and did my first ever show in 5th grade. I’ve done so many musicals and plays before and often get featured ensemble. I’ve learned to see the bright side of it and I usually do end up getting the understudy for a lead which is great cause I at least have a chance to maybe have to play the part lol. But this year I’m now a freshman and highschool and we are doing beauty and the beast, since I almost never get bigger parts I usually just go straight to the bottom of the list and look up. But this time I didn’t see my name of the bottom and got so scared that I just got in the general chorus but then I looked more just in case and saw that I actually got cogsworth! Last year, people always told me that it is impossible to get a big role when your a freshman so I shouldn’t get my hopes up. But I seem to be reversed cause this is the first time I got a role with more than like 30 lines without being an understudy. I’m so glad I got cogsworth too because he is my dream role in the musical besides belle but the girl who got belle definitely fits her perfectly and I would’ve been mad if she didn’t get belle lol so I’m very happy and definitely excited to start rehearsals!

I had almost the EXACT same experience when she started talking about The Wizard of Oz! I was in year 9 at the time. I had been onstage for one musical 5 years prior to this musical, and with every other musical I had been in stage crew. This one was going to be like my "debut role", and everyone was telling me I would definitley get Dorothy! So I had extremely high hopes, but I was competing for the role against a really talented girl in the year below. The audition was brilliant, I got a callback, kinda screwed it up a bit, but still, people were telling me I would get Dorothy. The cast list finally came out, and the other girl got the part. I was Tree 3. I was so upset at first, but it was actually such an incredible experience, and the other girl played Dorothy better than I ever could. I am currently hoping our school's next musical will be Beauty and the Beast, and seeing as it will be my final musical, and my dream role of all time is Belle, I'm really hoping that this dream can come true!

My school did a production of the wizard of oz. When they announced that I put my first choice as glinda and my second as dorothy. The day after I put that down my choice changed from glinda to dorothy but I couldn’t change it in the sheet. First auditions were held for glinda and I did really bad.my voice for her was all over the place and my singing in her voice wasn’t the best out of Al the other 12 girls there. Then I auditioned for Dorothy and I sung beautifully. I really really do believe I sung the best at that audition and I really do think I was a great fit for her. After I auditioned my other teacher (who didn’t have a final say in the casting but still helped my music teacher decide) pulled me out of class to say that I had the best voice in my (small) school and that I should change my mind about being glinda. I said I wanted to be Dorothy and he said ok.the day after I saw the casting and I was glinda. I understand why my teacher would put me as her, seeing as I put that as my first choice on paper but I still cried so much.

This hits hard for me, I used to feel like I was getting slighted everytime I didn't get a role. Im on the heavier side for girls(over 200) but my i have a lot of experience in the musical department. I got cast as irsula one year freakin lost it cuz I felt like I only got it since I was heavier than the other girls. In reality my director later told me it was because she thought the other actresses couldnt hold pitch and I had the best range lol (I had no idea). So I showed up to every rehearsal and my sister became a swing for the show. When we did the show my Sister(playing Sebastian) and I got a standing ovation for our numbers and everyone said we were amazing. My friends who came to see the show said they litterally only remember our scenes in it. So now I think a little differently about casting in general.

We had the same senior musical! I was so excited to be doing Wizard of Oz but then was devastated because I got Aunt Em after trying out for Tim Man. It was't that I was upset because it wasn't a big enough part like a lot of people seemed to think I was, I just felt like I was typecasted a lot and was trying to avoid it happening again so it was always hard when it did. I'm also with you on volunteering for stuff while working on a show! I volunteered for certain scenes that hadn't been cast originally, to be a "swing" for certain scenes when that was needed, as well as communicating with the set design people about happenings and stuff. I also choreographed for the musical's "preview" at the school Christmas concert that year. Another year we did Willy Wonka and since I wasn't really in the second act much I volunteered to be one of the people to hide on set and blow bubbles in one scene and decorate and carry a door across the stage in another (3 hours of decor work for 3 seconds on stage lol).

Oh I know the typecast game very well - as a taller girl (I'm 5'10") I have rarely been cast as a younger character and have often been chosen as the older/motherly roles for that reason. Sigh. I was told that I can be a spotter which is walking next to a float during the parade while watching all the other dancers and performers perform. My heart was crushed. This is my fourth year trying to get into Grand Carnivale and not making it. I always get these lesser non-performing roles that nobody wants. I'm a performer for the live entertainment department and put on shows as a costume Peanuts character. At these auditions, they always say that they're looking for performers and not dancers and don't care if you can dance and have the techniques. People at my job always say that one of the best performers for the costume Peanuts character and how I go above and beyond in costume and how I'm what people are looking for in performers but I never get chosen. I had rehearsals yesterday and it was hard for me to get excited while walking next to a float and thinking about what could've been if I was one of the performers.

I know that no other school in Arizona (my home state) has this opportunity but like still, im not making the most of it apparently. I wasn’t even considered for Seymour. My coping mechanism is telling myself that I’ll be Seymour somewhere else some day. I plan on doing theater for a career so logically, I’ll get another chance. I know i know it’s a high school musical and its not a big deal and maybe i have to pay my dues more, but i would retort that my competitiveness is good because it shows i care. And besides, im not just hating it because i didnt get the role, most of the people in my department just suck lol. If youre still reading, im sorry for wasting your time, and i promise there is infinitely more to myself than this.

I tried harder and studied how my character move and act, but apparently people who just started theatre 3 can literally get bigger roles than me. I literally watched the whole movie beauty and the beast (my school musical) just to know the plot and songs. And the crazy part is that the person who got the role I wanted (cogsworth) doesn't even have talent (SHE CAN NOT SING NOT TRYING TO BE RUDE) and she didn't even know cogsworth have a British accent so idk how tf she got the role, she only get certain roles because they're very confident. I put emotion into the song I was singing I even showed anger in parts that showed anger I did pauses blah blah blah. My friend did not like her role but she still got an enchanted role WHEN ITS HER FIRST TIME DOING THIS. And what I found out today which made me more mad, is that my character isn't even in the named character list, I'm a fucking bookseller and the villagers who was in the list. I always get low roles and I was told I can sing but I don't believe that because now I think they're just saying that to lift me up when they give me low role. I was scared but still pulled the best I can.

I feel like a lot of the time at my school the “director’s vision” already includes who she plans to cast because it’s always gonna be the people whose parents grew up here or the people who are “in” with the director. It’s probably not good for me to think like this though, do you have any tips to try to look at the whole thing differently?

In my last school play, Teen Court, I auditioned for one of the two parts that had singing moments. I thought I had a fair shot as a chorus girl. I didn’t get either. I got a middle aged football coach. What did I do? I put my heart and soul into being that middle aged man

so my school is doing mean girls jr. Callbacks we’re today, and I auditioned for Aaron. They had me read for aaron a lot, but they also had a boy in the grade above me read for him. As someone who is afab, I’m really doubting myself because I feel like the other guy is a much better fit. But, my two friends are literally perfect for Regina and Gretchen. So i’m just afraid that i’m going to be terribly disappointed when my friends get leads and i get ensemble. I want to think I have a chance, but I feel like the disappointment would be larger if i got my hopes up. The cast list comes out tonight, probably in about an hour. I’m just really scared

Sending you all the positive vibes! Regardless of what your role is in the show, it sounds you have friends who will be there experiencing the show with you, and that is wonderful on its own.
