#p70 #gdr #eastgermancar The AWZ P70 or Sachsenring P70 was built by the AWP IFA company VEB Automobilwerk Zwickau. We were able to film this Trabant predecessor Sachsenring P70 at the 20th International Trabant Drivers Meeting (ITT). Very few of the 36,151 vehicles ever built remain, with most being sedans and station wagons. Only about 1500 pieces were built as a coupe.
The P70 filmed here is already a Sachsenring P70 because it was built in 1959. In 1958, the AWZ was renamed Automobilwerke Zwickau, so the AWZ P70 became the Sachsenring P70. Thanks to Jens, who gave us an interview about his car, which has become very rare, there is certainly one or the other information for the connoisseur, but this video could also be of interest for P70 laypeople.
For example, I was completely unaware that the trunk cannot be opened from the outside because there is no flap for it.
Also interesting: Many said at the time how spartan the car was, but compared to the Trabant 601 (not 500 or 600!), the P70 is still really good. Water-cooled, a folding roof, soft seats and a whopping 22 hp from 700cc show what was possible back then.
Only the construction of the body, which still consisted of a wooden skeleton, was no longer up-to-date, the Duroplast covering even more so. In principle one can say that the P70 was the test vehicle for the Trabant, because the P70 was built on the basis of the IFA F8, which in turn is a pre-war construction. The fact that the plastic parts were tested on the P70 explains the relatively short construction time of four years for the GDR.
From 1958-1959 the Sachsenring P70 was still built alongside the Trabant 500. Since the P70 was slightly larger.
