That happens with therapists/counselors too. When someone shows up and tells me how terrible their last therapist was, I am very cautious.

Baba seems to put the majority of responsibility on the initiate. Poroye seems more realistic. A lot of problems in the houses is greed. In the old ways it was unheard of for a Awo to have hundreds of Godchildren. It was more centered because godparents was considered a responsibility to their crown. Exhorbent fees was considered immoral. Not everyone was admitted freely into the religion. It was a process. Again people who come to Ifa are seeking it is a wise and moral Baba who should discern and not let money influence their decisions.

I appreciate the honesty in this video. You both were very clear as always about the topic. That said, with all due respect Baba Joseph, it seems the onus for dissolution of relationships between godparents and godchildren is being placed primarily on the godchild. I don’t think you’re taking into consideration just how horrible godparents can be. I love your podcast because you and your wife are an anomaly in this culture. You’re about doing what is right and for the betterment of people and their evolution. You’re both extremely communicative and mature. This again isn’t normal, not as far as I’ve seen or experienced. I do agree that for godchildren shouldn’t speak badly about their experience with a godparent, but when these godparents commit heinous evil acts, they should be put on blast and ostracized from the community. Personally speaking, I’ve had issues with godparents trying to sleep with me. I don’t know what I’m doing to constantly experience this but these priests need to get their stuff together. When I received my Kofa, during the reading I recall one priest god fixated on what I liked sexually. This is during my ceremony. I don’t know what letter he saw or why this was to speak on or voice out loud. I was embarrassed and neither my godfather or the other babalaos put a stop to it. I had one godparent that I learned later who had only goddaughters and slept with ALL of them except me. I left. I’ve experienced this with babalaos, Santeros, and Paleros. Then there’s one who as far as I’m concerned played a hand in the death of my mother due to ill advice and thievery. This babalao charged my mother an astronomical amount to receive Olokun and he and his wife took my mother to the ocean at night, cleaned her and put the things that he cleaned her with back in the turine. There was no Oba present, none of what the process of receiving this orisha entailed was done. He and his wife simply cleaned her and sent her home with a turine and told her she had Olokun. My mother had cancer. My mother was lighting candle to this thing in her home with my siblings and nephew. She went back into the hospital after that ceremony and never left. If I didn’t have a child to take care of, believe me when I say I would’ve willingly to go to prison for unaliving this man and his wife. It will be ten years since my mother’s passing and I’m just as angry when I think about it. I pray Obatala never place me in the presence of this man or his wife because I honestly don’t know what I’d do to either of them. This is what some godchildren are dealing with. The culture is not filled with honorable people like you and your wife. It’s filled with vultures, egos, immorality. Experiences like this cause mistrust. It is the main reasons why I haven’t crowned Obatala as of yet. I truly despise most of people and don’t trust them. So, I hold my corner and mind my business. I’m a straight forward no nonsense kind of person. I have no time for BS. I pray to get over my disdain with most in the religion so that I can complete my spiritual path with Obatala, but it’s going to take a lot on my part. To those who are able to find good honest people to mentor and crown them, they’re blessed because it really isn’t that easy for some of us.

As a priest of Esu of 12 years (aborisha for 8 years prior), I have seen some things. Whereas I appreciated this podcast, I feel like a lot of responsibility of "respect" is put on the godchild and the mutual respect of the Godparent to the Godchild is not emphasized. There is so much about this subject that needs to be explored, and kudos to you for being brave enough to tackle this subject. But, to my chagrin, I've seen a lot of good Godchildren torn down and disrespected by elders- good people who cared about this faith, the Orisha, and carrying the tradition forward to only be nickel and dimed for everything, asked to purchase things outside of their ceremonial fees (even if it was not their ceremony), taking on personal expenses of the godparent- and made to feel like it is their responsibility to take care of every need of the godparent. It becomes a 'cult' and not a faith and in these situations the godparent becomes greater than the Orisha. So what do you say to that??? I'm sorry, but I am just a little tired of the over emphasis of staying true to Godparents that treat their Godchildren in this way. So what happens? The Godchild stays getting abused, misused, and mistreated all in the name of Orisha- meantime they are not getting taught, directed, or guided, nor are they being mentored to fulfill their destiny. I need to someone to approach that in honesty. It is not always a "forever and always" relationship- and though I found this podcast to be helpful, this subject of mistreatment and the REAL responsibility of the godparent, because people are becoming godparents and have not idea of that responsibility. This podcast focused way too much on this deference to godparents- but it is the children that carry the legacy forward- and enough emphasis is not placed on that. I would encourage you to speak on this, and have various godchildren to discuss their experience to provide a more unbiased standpoint.

So am I doomed for life, because there is NO reconciliation possible for me and my Padrino? What about when you no longer trust or feel safe with the person who initiated you? What about when the priest disrespects you and views you as a business transaction, and treats you as such? I need help!🙏🏾

It is teachers teaching teachers to improve the education system and further the idea of academics, except in this case it is within spiritualism and life guidance to improve ones life from a spiritual stand point and passing on the knowledge of the household traditions. In the education system, it is said it is like Santeria/Lucumi/Ifa/etc it cost money to maintain and keep at it... and I agree Baba in that if you fail the exam you will be charge higher the second or third time around. The education system is the same. To get a certification in education, lets say for teaching Social Sciences it is $250 first time around and there afterwards retakes are over $350 each. As someone with two degrees in teaching and four certification and 4 endorsements in the education profession, I totally get what you and Erica Oshun state here. We have the same thing in the education system with the pricing system and how mentorship works. Though recently, in the last four years, I am disappointed with how the public school systems are being managed and dealing with mentorship poorly, as it don't make sense to me. I come to found out through family ties there are other forms of educators in this world and it doesn't always involve being condescending or vindictive to get to the position of that as a master teacher or professor. Finding the right mentor and guiders is very important to be a successful teacher. What I love about this path is how I can be as patience as I want to be and not be criticized or made fun of for it and the people I am connected with are just as patience and attentive. Thank you you for this amazing video. ASE! 🥰🙏

This was a great topic! I come from a bloodline of Santos/ Paleros who most no longer practice after being in America. However, I think there is a huge imbalance on both sides. Majority of Palo/Ifa houses are filled with huge egos, power/control, scandals, addictions, sex trafficking, puppets by manipulation/curses, jealousy, envy, competition, lack of information/knowledge/wisdom/teaching, & exploitation!!!! Oh the men are patriarchal on the Lukumi side, lack of respect for women, & still in 2022 tell women they can’t know most information because it’s only privy to Babawos etc…odu is feminine! Most houses act more like cults then open & honesty! Right before I completely abandoned the Cuban side, I had a reading with Joseph . The reading was amazing, he was the first I had met that was younger & had more wisdom, Ase for divination, right procedures, then most 20-50 year elders. Joseph is skilled in divination, & without books. I abandoned Ifa after experiencing so much spiritual attacks from my so called elders, & spiritual siblings!!! I am not mad at them, actually thank them all! I learned exactly who my destiny odu is!!! Even my exit to completely depart, was in my destiny-Odu! I’m all about honor, devotion, & respect…but it wasn’t until I left completely even the Isese side that I made peace to know that religion wasn’t my path! You have to know that everyone has a destiny & fate! I am more spiritual then most & anytime I walk into a room of Orishas/Palo/Egun they all speak, show, & tell me things. It never fails. No matter which way you go you will get there. Its no one’s job to judge your destiny or karma. They can help or destroy it’s all divine order. Every moment. . Had I not had Palero’s etc…attacking my life spiritually I wouldn’t be at the level i am now to completely defend myself and have the power of Orisha inside of me, instead of in a pot, prenda, or nganga. Everyone isn’t meant to have a master! There is a messiah in every bloodline, who comes to effect change! I will forever be grateful & give to those who at least open there doors to me when I was under attack spiritually by my very own spiritual house, without cause. Ase,

@@locsalkey2594 The biggest problem with all religion (Manmade laws) is FREEDOM & ignorance, whether born into it or not! Then humans use morality to try to dictate or justify why they know best, why you should fear them, why their will rules over yours?! Nothing about RELIGION is freedom, it is very slavish, cult-like. Slave On every aspect that claims structure & foundation & I’m no slave: mentally, physically, or spiritually, that’s a HUGE problem for any awakened or EVOLVED soul! In my studies & practice of law, this is why the so called government who are really US corporation & all judges and attorneys are not citizens of America, this is why they have to give you redemption and/or remedy in law- whether tax, criminal, equity, or civil law! Yet they subject you to massive amounts of fear ,control tactics, and enslaving of your mind to ensure you remain a slave, disconnected from being a living soul- the constitution (created by men) exist for them to keep you a slave…RELIGION is no difference: all laws were made -with the sole purpose of keeping you a slave! Only the Supreme Court justices rules on sovereign powers….. Beyond GREED, yet we are suppose to trust these people with titles, agendas, superiority complexes: Babalawos, priests, judges, attorneys etc with our spirit: giving them the power to control our spiritual power, energy, currency, & fate at the root??? @@defensivemagick You speak of Freedom but Freedom in its true form is subjective. I think maybe you are speaking of liberties within a system of governing rules. The key word is discipline. Religion was enacted to serve the disconnect between God and man. However, man being a lower level anima does not always have the desires of higher order of spirit. In addition man does not always walk in the light. Granted you must have self awareness which gives way to spiritual elevation if destiny is manifest within. However, how is the earthly body grounded? To what belief? All Religions are beautiful and are coded for a better way of earthly existence. In turn your spiritual will elevate. However, it is the corrupt nature of man that promotes different translations and interpretation of religions purity to suit the purpose of those who claim to be spiritual leaders. If reading the Odu's, the Bible, the Vedic Scriptures or the Quaran to name a few you see the beauty of its wisdom. Your own discernment should instruct reading. The laws does not seek morality but justice. The same with religion, it does not seek justice but provides the groundwork for morality in so doing man would have no need for justice or the carnal law. In that essence he will be truly free.

Once I left even Isese side, I found so much more about my odu, and destiny. After leaving, I vowed to myself that I would never ever join another house. I just connect with different traditions of indigenous ppl all over the world & practice spirituality, not religion. If you are in position to leave, GO!!! And be sure about it, make sure you try your best to depart on good terms. If that isn’t possible, make sure you have a heart to heart with the Orishas/Palo. Release yourself from the bondage of fear, curses, evil eyes & curses on those who try to intimidate you or tell you you are going to die or try to execute their will over yours etc….clear any debts as best you can….I tell you this by experience. I left never joined another house and carry on through fellowship & culture experiences. I’ve met Babalawo, Oreta’s, & all types of elders who have retired their Orishas because of the wickedness & greed tied to human nature.
