As an 11 year old boy, working with my neighbour .I remember that bucket system (3) 18 cows big farmer back then. I remember Mossie (the farmer) was at a meeting, CO OP related. 6PM milking started always. I bought in the cows chained them up in the stalls. Farmer must have delayed maybe a little drink after the meeting. Who knows. I decided to milk away on my own.Started up the Manus milking machine. Had a few milked when his mother came up in a terrible state. She didnt think I was up for the task. I assured her all was running smoothly. I can still see her stroking the udders of the cows I had milked. Making sure I had them were well drained of milk. Milked the cows there many a time after that.Until I finished school. Never milked a cow since.54 years later. Other distractions and work came along. Enjoyed that time with those lovely neighbours. Rush down there after school. Happy days.May they all R.I.P. Thanks for the memories. Funny I I always have an interest in farming, it got in the blood Isuppose.🐄🐃🐂

oh my goodness! Thanks for the memories. lol My son and his friend put chocolate sauce in the piece that goes on the udder. Then put it on the cow while milking to prove that brown cows give chocolate milk to a girlfriend. The chocolate milk came spilling into the jar, which was closed of course. Can't put that in the tank. She was impressed and told everyone that she saw a brown cow give chocolate milk. Oh brother! Great video Adrian!

Our local supermercato sells butter from several countries. I would routinely buy butter made either in Italy or Hungary (very good quality). Since watching your channel (just recently) I buy butter from Ireland. Certainly, my 'wee' purchases mean nothing in the market, but it's simply fun to think in some way I help your farm. 🧈

Adrian, thanks for the tour. I have come to the conclusion that upgrades tend to change one stickler for another. Granted, the new stickler may be more user friendly, but the learning curve and general maintenance cannot be avoided. 🇺🇸

You are right to keep everything simple, such that you can maintain it yourself. For the size of farm you have, it wouldn't make sense to have anything high-tech. Like owning a classic tractor that does the job perfect;y well and doesn't depreciate.

A farmer that has to continually pay other people for repairs and maintenance must take a significant hit in profits in comparison.

Welding technique. Stick welding pull towards you, mig welding push away from you, gas is designed to purify weld as you go, especially so on light fabrication, angle iron box section n the like. You will get a nice flat weld opposed to all bunched up. Big welds as in digger buckets n the like you will get away with it as your weaving a broad weld,15, 20 or even 25 mm wide. I know it was a simple useful tip when I started.

We hand milked 12 cows in the early 50 to 61. Then Canada went to the milk quota and we switched over to a calf cow operation. My mother could hand milk 2 cows to my one.

Built my own 12/24 from second hand parts in 2002 added extra milk meters in 2008 then in 2014 I built my own 32/64,I’ve never been afraid of electrics and wired everything myself.

Loved seeing the parlor. When you get to the basics it isn't to different than smaller farms in the US. You have a creative mind, and it is set for saving money and quality. I love it. Do you have any thing over there like an adhesive sand paper to put on the floor pads. Most often they are used on steps or ramps to prevent slipping. Maybe you can get something similar. I used to keep sucklers in the tie stall barn with the chain around the neck the cows were pure pets from been handled all the time if I went back into farmimg I'd not go slats for the cows I'd go back to the tie stall barn

Very interesting video. We changed from a stall parlour to a fullwood herringbone 7-14 in early 90s with jars like you, then added an extra stall in 2002. In 2007 we bought another 30 cows so we were milking around 110, it was taking around 6 hours a day to milk them twice which was far too long. So after a few years of milking like that, we took a big step and extended the parlour to a 12 - 24 and made it direct to line with acr's and bought second hand feeders and mangers to match our existing feeders. What a difference that had made, we can be milked and washed up in less than 2 hours and now milking around 130. Trouble is now the old feeders are tired but there are always plenty of second hand about so I have plenty of spares for them.

I milked 130 for a man for a good few years, he had a summer parlour on the out farm (10 unit) and a winter parlour at home (12 unit) herringbone. Just them extra 2 units at home made a big difference time wise!. Anywhere you can save time is a good investment

In 2001 I built a 24/48 swing over parlour myself, we had an 8/16 parlour with feeders and electronics, it was only 5 years old but horrendous, cows didn’t like it and dead slow We built the 24,48 in the existing 5 year old building by changing the angle the cows stood on, narrowing the pit from 8’ to 5’ and lengthening the pit by 10’ Total cost £12,000 all secondhand equipment, swingover, no feeders, no acrs, manual pit swing butterfly front gates which could be operated anywhere in the pit, manual back gates on a rope…… It took me 6 weeks with 100 lengths of nominal bore galvanized scaffolding pipe, a pipe bender and s welder, got a dairy engineer who was a contract fitter up from Cheshire for a weekend to pipe everything up…. Can’t remember the lady who drew up the plans but she was a grazing dairy consultant from Southern Ireland…

Really interesting video Adrian, I started my milking career in the early 60’s at my uncles farm and he hand milked about 12/14 cows at the time, that was enough to put me off dairying and swore I’d never have cows at home. We only ever took in stirks for fattening and lambs to eat off the fuggage after hay time and fatten them off, I stayed mainly arable all my days after that, might’ve been a different story if it was a parlour like yours though. 👍😎

Better you than i the hours your not working in the 24 hrs day you are on call-out. 24 hrs 52 weeks of the year St Patrick's Day Christmas holidays and new years day Easter and bank holidays. Then there's the leap year. Some dogs are very sensitive. Would a man not be better off breaking rocks with a sledgehammer or do they still run those one way free transport ships to van diemens land at least it would be warmer they say they were the good old days. My father always did the milking and the six stall breat parlour would be spottles from start to finish ,when i did the milking from time to time the cows where great and gave no trubble but almost every single one would dung and i would have a hell of a mess to clean up at the end.👍.

Farm I work on went from parlour to robots in February. Interest in 20 year old De Laval double 8 herringbone milk meter and auto take of was zero. Gave our Neighbor milk clusters and some spareparts to his tie up stall

Am 40 and learnt to milk cows in a byre 22 at a time direct line with 4 machines was a pain if a hefier kicked it off loss of vacume ment 4 machines fell off 😂😂 was great getting the parlour fitted we bought it second hand welded new bars on her and done the pit work our selfs shes still going now that was 24 years ago we fitted it same as yours but with the jars above

We upgraded our jar plant from a 10 unit to a 14 around the same time you done yours. We rose up the jars and made the bar that drops down with the pipes and the hanger for the cluster swinging. It transformed the parlour and milking and our pit was smaller than yours. Don't get rid of the jars
