here in NZ we buy Y posts painted black and put a plastic cover over the top - just incase a cow decides to jump over that steel post and injure themselves - they are around NZ54cents each when you buy a box and are made out UV stabilised polypropylene - called yellow plastic post caps for Y posts if you are looking for them

In the U.S. the metal post 'driver' is a very thick and sturdy long metal cylinder like yours, and it has two large, long handles at the top end, located opposite to each other, which is where it's gripped with each hand, for driving posts in. Probably easy to find some photos or videos of them, online. FarmerTylerRanch has such videos, for sure. Your 'driver' without any handles was a shock to me! Also, in addition to pure 100% peppermint oil for prevention of unwanted insects, pure pennyroyal oil also works. Thanks Adrian for another excellent video! Evelyn in Minnesota

In Australia they're called Star Pickets and come painted with black bitumen paint or galvanised and sizes 1.2m, 1.8m and 2.4m long. Generally they don't have the clips attached but have holes punched about every 100mm which makes attaching a strainer to an end post very easy.........BTW, great videos with interesting content.....thanks

They are a good looking job Adrian. I only worked with them once with a suckler farm up in oldcastle and he seems very happy with them. I made road ways on my own farm in 2018 and a lot of the posts are rotten and need replacing already. I just might try them steel ones on some of it. Well done on yet another great video lad

Only issue I have had with steel posts is around silage fields where long grass grows around them and reaches the wire.when that grass gets wet current disappears ,cattle grazing after cutting helps but you may have to either clean or spray around them.

A farm I worked on in oz cut out the y shape on a flat plate slightly bigger than the post itself and connected chain to front loader, slide straight over the post and the slight tension pulls it straight up with very efficient speed to remove and attach each post although the star pickets we used didn’t have them wee spring latches to get in the way

You can purchase (here in NZ so you must in Ireland) a steel strainer kit to go with the metal Y posts to do corners etc - called a steel strainer kit - a single strainer NZ$179 and a double strainer NZ$272 depending on where it need to go - you will understand this as you have put in wooden strainers - same concept

Adrian , peppermint spray around windows and corners in the house stops spiders to....the high lift jack mod, just get a bow shackle that's bolt goes through the fencing pole and use the piece of chain going through the triangle cast on the jack and link both chain ends together with the bow shackle....if memory serves me well I believe Highlift make attachements for that jack

Hi Adrian, I’m getting a chance to view your video property today, I agree about the corrosion issue, if you have the time I would suggest that they would be painted with bitumen paint, or at least the portion of the post plus 4” (100mm) that goes underground, that will give them many more years life. A quicker but more expensive option is to have a steel barrel and melt bitumen in it and simply dip the bottom of the stakes into the bitumen. Great content as always.

Adrian, on a slight bend (not straight line) you could put the steel stake in at a slight angle away from the bend and it helps to keep the stake from leaning over.

i do like the clipex posts as they last longer. those insulators are ok, not great on corners, cattle do snap them off ocasionally so your left with wire shorting out on the metal fence post. recommend the white caps for the metal posts if your using them anywhere that cattle bunch up and put pressure on fence or spending alot of time near. lost one steer a few years ago that had sliced his shoulder open on the sharpe top of a post. not sure if he had been using as a scratching post, or was riding and fell on to it.

Being a Cavan man and all that 😁 recycle empty plastic bottles cut the tops and bottoms off and slip them over the posts to stop the dung getting on them, and start up a worm farm for when the digger business takes off 😉

I’ve got a neighbour that’s just had Y post fencing done. It was made by Clipex and there’s 2 different post you put in. Most of the fence is normal Y posts but every 5th is a beefy Y post it gives the fence a lot more strength. Also you can get Clipex post caps for holding wire and electric wire. Not sure if they’re any good or not but might be worth a look. Cheers.

I’ve used steel posts for years & I’m close to the ocean so a lot of things rust. Prefer steel posts wherever you have a straight line fence but buy insulators with plastic pins. Steel lasts longer than wood and maintenance is soo much quicker & easier. Only downside is curved laneways and you can’t get away from 10” diameter wood in nice & deep. My other suggestion is ratchet tensioners you can buy and you tighten them with a spanner. You just tension things enough not too tight as the temptation with strainers. That way tree branches falling ect doesn’t destroy a fence. Keep up the content 👌

I didn't know that yellow jackets hate peppermint. I'm going to get some because I hate those buggers. Thanks for that tip! They are just plain nasty, and they will chase you. I know all creatures have a purpose but, for the life of me, I can't figure what the purpose of the yellow jacket is. The fencing looks great. Nice and straight. I wonder if you could coat the steel posts just where they meet the ground with something like tar that would protect them from the fertilizer.

We have used the galvanised steel post have been in the ground around 15 years or more they are rusted on the bottom yes but still very strong we will just sand the rust of and re paint them with bit silever kill rust and get fair bit more out them

Our steel posts are different. They have holes in them to put pin lock insulators on never use claw ones plus they come in galvanised and painted black but there are also plastic ones made by Gallagher from memory. With your post driver weld some handles on it much easier to use and most have a lug welded inside ti stop the post from twisting

I have seen the posts installed for a grass reseeding demo day back seven years ago. Each one is perfect but it is that initial cost is the trouble. The clip needs to be refined more but the concept is slowly taking off. Timber posts on average last five years so this option makes for a gradual change over worth while.
