a bit of explanation for those who didn't understand why Laura Dern (besides bc look at her omg) laura dern lost a lot of work and all the big producers stopped working with her during a lot of years bc she played the love interest on the ellen coming out episode. she's an ally and she's spoken (used her voice and privilege) for the lgbtq+ community lots of times. she's said she would do it all again bc of what it meant to so many people. it's an homage

Interesting. I always read that gag as deliberate. Like it was a sarcastic evocation of the political urgency tag-on that seems to show up in every awards show speech and introduction. She kind of did something similar with the female directors joke in the opening where she made it more about playfully trolling paranoid conservatives than congratulating the voter body (which is usually what they’re for).

What people may not remember is that it was Laura Dern who played the out lesbian who helped Ellen come out in her television show Ellen in 1997. Oprah played her therapist. It was also Laura Dern who was blackballed in Hollywood for over a year because of the choice to take the role back then. She had just starred as Ellie Sattler in the biggest movie franchise in the world but bomb threats were called in to the set of the sitcom because of the episode. She and Oprah were whisked off set because of a police sweep. The backlash was awful and she had to have a security detail for several years after. So, to see this 25 or so years later? It’s definitely progress and definitely heartwarming, as I’m sure it was for her, but we cannot forget why it was so important for them to do in the first place. Laura Dern, indeed. ❤
