Re-watched this. Even commented 14 years ago. My K1100rs has gone but my trusty R100/r remains…. along with an R26. Hope you’re still riding and enjoying that beautiful machine.

Checking out everything; oil, tire pressure; a general walkaround before you go... a labor of love... BMW loves you back with superb performance & extreme satisfaction when you are on the move with these bikes!

Nice someone actually showing the right way to check oil level, and taking care to check tire pressure before the ride.

I have a 1971 R75/5 BMW.....they are a joy to ride. I've had 5 different R75/5's over the years. The 1971 Short Wheel Base is my favorite. They are simple to maintain and easy to work on if needed...….but they DO require maintenance and attention.

Hi. Lovely bike and quality video. My 30 year old R80 still has it's original toolkit....probably one of the nicest standard toolkits around, better than most modern bikes, and one that I'd rarely need to use in anger. It even came with it's own BMW hand towel.

Nice. Unusual to have original fuel taps. I think they had cork seals. Spark plug caps also original pattern. Mufflers are a more modern design, great if you got the much more tapered end ones. Classic keeper

my goodness, by the time you check everything like you did i would think twice about even riding it. too much boogie. i've had 3 /5's and have run so low on oil that there was nothing showing on the stick. still they always kept on ticking. your bike does seem very ticky though. perhaps a tightening of the valves?

Beautiful bike!! My Dad had one he fixed up. I loved that old bike; even more than my R-60/7. If it hadn't gotten crushed in my brother's carport, I'd have it!! Would love to get another one. BTW: The R-60/5 will comfortably do 80!! I speak from experience!!

I had a R50/5 and it would do 80, just. And an r75/5 that would do 120.

The best part of riding my 1968 R60 was the 'clunky' when I put in 1st gear. Either these are brand new tires (see the front tire especially) or this bike is rarely ridden.

Hi Kevin, nice video, I can see you take good care of this beauty, I would only do one thing different, I wouldn´t step on the kickstarter like you do it on a Harley, it´s aluminun, it´s easier to mount on the bike, step with the right leg on the right peg and give it a kick with the left leg, hope you don´t get me wrong, just trying to help. Also we´ll appreciate it if you make a longer riding video, thanks for posting.

Rode a R60/2 for 30,000 miles and the group I rode with all started our bikes as shown in the video. That cast aluminum kick starter never broke on any of the bikes in our group. We did have a side mount kick stand which made it easer to kick start from the side.

It's the right thing to do, starting with left foot. If you pend your weight to the right the bike will fall to the right side and you'll go over it.

You can also look at the drive shaft itself. If the bike is a LWB, you'll see a roughly 2" area toward the back of the driveline that was welded in at the factory. Once you see one, you'll see how obvious it is.

@65jammie Sorry for not getting back to you right away. I don`t think my motorcycle would have any problem going 75 mph but I usually don`t go faster than 65 mph. The R75/5 would probably be a better choice for higher speeds. The R60 & R75 are suppose to run on premium and on hot days the modern "premium" still causes my engine to ping. Most of the riding I do is just around town. Parts are easy to find online, Your typical BMW dealer isn`t going to have much but they could order anything.

@RCA2nd That`s the turn signal indicator light. Try Googling Bob`s BMW, Capitol Cycle, or Hucky`s BMW for parts. There are many others too. You should have no problem finding any part. Mine has the Euro handlebars, the American bars are taller. Also it is the short wheel base (SWB) version. The later LWB model has the battery side covers & different seat cover. Thanks.

*clunk* I had a 75/6, and I miss the sound of the gear change. I regret that I got it as my first bike after learning to ride, though, because it was too much for me to handle. I wish I had gotten something like a small single instead; something like a Ducati 350 Desmo would have been nice. (I don't want much, do I?)

My R75/5 after a proper valve adjustment (.04" intake, 08" exhaust) is really quiet - just a barely audible valve tick...

Its only dangerous if the valves stop to sound like spanish castanet band. It gets a little quieter when properly warmed up though.
