Dino Crisis 1 was a certified classic, and Dino Crisis 2 was a worthy sequel that gets a lot of undeserved hate for being an action game instead of a horror game. I think the move from horror to action was justified, since this would be the second time Regina would face the dinosaurs and has been equipment and support this time around. The same type of survival-panic wouldn't make sense the second time around. Maybe the concept could've been executed better, but Dino Crisis 2 was still a competent and enjoyable entry in the DC franchise. DC 1 and 2 are like Alien and Aliens for me; both good movies with different tones.

The thing is, the series is not really that great. It's a reskin of resident evil. It is not worth a sequel. It didn't do anything. Games that deserve a sequel are like Godhand, one of the greatest game of all time, developed under a year yet is much of innovation that is still unsurpassed and looks like it will never be thanks to the souls series. The game's dynamic/adaptive difficulty system is so advanced that not even the AI of modern games can come close to it. It was a game that cares about your experience, a game that wants you to be better by actually helping you to be better. Compare that to Dino Crisis, what has Dino Crisis contributed to gaming that it deserves a sequel? Nothing.

As a kid, these were my absolute favorite games. I inherited my older brother’s ps1 when he got a ps2 and I played through these games dozens of times each. I did speed runs of 2, but never 1. I enjoyed the slow methodical approach, even at 9 or 10. It was the first game that made me think and plan ahead. I learned that the most efficient use of resources was to hoard supplies for poison darts rather than ammo so you can permanently put down the big bad black ones in the last third of the game and breeze through the toughest parts, and it made me feel really accomplished to handle the toughest sections like a walk in the park

Videos like these give me hope that, soon, Dino Crisis will slowly reach the same level of recognition that RE, SH, Shenmue, DMC, etc, once did, after only a few devoted fans kept the flame alive. And, when that day comes, I hope Capcom is listening… That recently announced Exoprimal really felt like a punch to the gut, similar to how RE6/Umbrella Corps or DMC reboot did, so I really wish more fans could step up, spread the word, and join in one voice to finally bring back this dormant franchise. This is where I get personal: Dino crisis 1 was such a shock back when it released, and it partly the game that made me further interested in survival horror, but Dino Crisis 2 was something else entirely… it was the action I loved from classic movies like Aliens, but with the coat of paint from Jurassic Park, more precisely: The Lost World… which is my favorite of the Jurassic films, alongside the classic gameplay aspects from both Dino Crisis and the newest RE games, that game became my very first addiction… I wasn’t forced into finding all the secrets, or playing it in the harder difficulties, or with a no damage score in all the levels…. No….. i WANTED to do it, and it was the very first time I felt that… I was so proud of having memorized all the Dino files locations through every playthrough, and every new replay felt different and fresh, as I kept unlocking more stuff that I kept earning, plus also getting enough points for the extra crisis mode. The game kept me hooked far after the ps1 era… I got the game (pirated sorry) on PC, then emulated on my phone, then I found an original ps1 copy, bought it on my vita, and I keep replaying and beating the game as soon as I get the chance… It’s been my one answer to: ‘’what’s your favorite game ever?’’ Since I first played it back in the early 2000’s. I dream of one day, watching a game reveal show, or an award show, and suddenly seeing that raptor paw drop in a dark room with one light in the middle, and seeing the words R E M A K E. Exoprimal’s announcement made me feel so betrayed… especially when they showed the redhead girl… I just felt like they were ready to kill it, and rework it for modern, post-fortnite audiences, and call it a day…. And I still can’t shake the feeling of sadness whenever they show more of it. Especially knowing how long it’s been… people I used to play the originals with, are either out of my life, or dead… and it depresses me greatly, feeling like I might be the only sad little nerd who still holds on to this franchise with a life saving grip, hoping that someday, I’ll see it again, and videos like these, lighten the grip a bit, as I feel I’m not the only one there… and i mean, other childhood classics came back, Resident Evil 2 and 3, Silent Hill 2, Alone in the Dark… so… maybe… one day, we’ll get to see Regina, Gail, Rick, Dr. Kirk, and the badasses from T.R.A.T David and Dylan as well as Paula back again, and maybe, even a proper third part that finally solves that mysterious DC 2 ending that has been laying dormant in my heart since I was but a tiny little kid on my way to school every week… So, I guess, what I’m trying to say is: thank you for this… you’re keeping the hope in my heart alive just by still thinking about this franchise, let alone taking this much effort to make such a detailed and fascinating video. Safe to say, you have a new subscriber. Greetings from Mexico, and now, to keep waiting… for as long as life lets me. 1:05:08 also, real quick, that wasn’t the Giganotosaurus, that’s the T-Rex, the ‘’one eyed menace’’ who chases you throughout the whole game, only to later be turned to mush by the actual final baddie, the Giga. 1:25:39 Triceratops mate, also quite possibly the same ones you saw roaming in the background earlier with their child, they go on a rampage after the poor little critter dies either by mean spirited survivors, or just caught in the crossfire. ALSO thank you for being the only person who’s given Dino Crisis 3 a proper chance… I remember being so puzzled and let down by the game’s reviews, but when I played it, I realized it wasn’t really that bad, and while the story’s only connections to DC might be the mother super computer just like Dino Stalker, the third energy and the mention of Dylan, I really was intrigued by the story and the way it slowly revealed itself. Plus the Dino mutants were beautifully designed. And I’m glad I’m not the only one who felt like thee was a slight connection between this game and Dead Space… I always described this as an early dead space with zombie dinosaurs and crazy combat.

@@IFinishedAVideoGame I'd say retrospectives like this, while more common than they used to be, are still pretty rare. So, I'm watching this again, and the Dinos In Space game is still the coolest looking one to me. But I've figured out why I enjoy your videos so much. It's not just that you research everything pretty well or provide an objective look, it's your narration style. So many KZbinrs either sound like game show hosts, condescending, overly sardonic dweebs, or put on ridiculously dramatic voices, or constantly making terrible jokes. You don't do that. Every time I watch your stuff, I feel like me and my faceless Brit pal have sat down in the bar, a pint for each of us, and he's happily telling me about something he legitimately loves. The excitement is genuine, the critiques are honest, the praise is heartfelt. These videos have a pleasant, almost cozy feel to them, and each time one ends I look forward to the next one. You're doing a solid job. I don't know if you're intentionally cultivating the atmosphere I've described, but if so, it's noticed and I dig it. Now let's see that Castlevania video!

All I can say in response to this is thank you. It's probably the nicest comment I've ever had on the channel and really encapsulates everything I'm going for. I know I might not be the most well-researched, have the best production, or even have the most original takes - but what I do have is a real genuine passion for this era of video games. I always used to tell my friends stories when we'd sit around drinking or smoking and I think that it translates quite well over to KZbin - I'm really happy that it's coming through in the videos! Castlevania shouldn't be that far away! It's an absolutely huge video which is easily my longest yet but I think it should be well worth the wait! Thanks once again for commenting - it really made my day!

@@IFinishedAVideoGame it's researched well enough for me. Your Eternal Darkness vid was pretty thorough. And as far as production values go, none of this stuff has been shoddy in the least. I dig the conversational approach. I dig the little fun bits like naming chapters after some of my favorite short stories. I like that I start finding myself interested in series that I honestly never was interested in before, like, honestly, this one. I used to think Resident Evil: Jurassic Park Edition was the dumbest thing ever, but then you showed me videos of a mutated T-Rex on a derelict space ship and mercenaries fighting off velociraptors in cybernetic armor in a tone of voice that's clearly accompanied by a grin and full awareness of how utterly ridiculous and awesome that is. You reply to damn near every comment, you give us enjoyable videos that contain effort when you could easily churn out "TOP FIVES TIMES LINK LOOKED AT ZELDA'S BUTT" garbage. What if Dino Crisis 3's original concept wasn't abandoned in favor of that whole mutant dinosaurs in space-concept or what if DC3's gameplay actually worked out as intended are some of those big "what if" scenarios (dinosaur games in general seem to be somewhat cursed in that regard; JP Trespasser is another dinosaur game that is just absolutely seeped in what ifs) in gaming. Maybe in such timelines, DC would still be one of the big active Capcom-series alongside its RE cousin. Maybe it would be dead but killed by some later entry in the series instead of DC3. Or maybe it would have been killed by DC3 no matter whether it took place on solid ground or in the depths of space or how good the game was. On a side note, it is pretty weird that there hasn't been a RE game or movie (I think that there is a RE comic that features a space station outbreak, but given that I'ven't read any of them, I can't be certain) that takes place either completely or partially in space. Given how bizarre that series has occasionally gotten over the years and how its evil corps just love to put their labs in the most ridiculous places, you'd think there'd be at least one entry where the secret evil lab is on a space station by now. Maybe DC3's failure is the thing that stops Capcom from going full zombies in space. But to end on a positive note; I must say that some of DC3's space mutant dinosaur designs look cool as fuck.
@IFinishedAVideoGame2 жыл бұрын
Yeah DC3 is a weird game - it gets such a harsh rap and while that is mostly deserved I feel like there is some dimension out there where it was actually considered a really great game. If that camera was just refined a little bit more, the difficulty remixed and if it just wasn't called Dino Crisis 3 - I think it would have done a huge degree better!

This video was a real treat. I've sung the praises of Dino Crisis 2's addictive combat system for all these years, but usually I get pushback from people who didn't like the departure from the original. In some ways DC2 is like RE4, in that both games represented a dramatic shift in direction away from survival (or panic) horror that ultimately would turn out to be a mistake in philosophy that would need to be corrected. And yet, both games are so much fun that it's hard to criticize them for it, especially RE4 which is inarguably a masterpiece. And I say that as someone who usually prefers the stripped-down survival horror entries. But sometimes the first step in the "wrong" direction can be exhilarating if the execution is there.
@IFinishedAVideoGame2 жыл бұрын
That's a very interesting point about a great game in the wrong direction. Couldn't agree with you more about RE4. It might be one of my favourite games of all time but the loss of the true survival horror branch of the franchise was a big price to pay!
@thedarkemissary2 жыл бұрын
RE4 still has limits on what you can do. Even going as far as designing several sections to deplete your resources. You have limited inventory, limited ammo, limited health. The video is right in pointing out that it feels nothing like Dino Crisis 1 and more like an action arcade game. Remember the earlier criticism of Dino Crisis 1's "easy" mode. I tried several times to play Dino Crisis 2, but never got more than 5 minutes in with the word "combo" and respawning enemies destroying all motivation to continue. It's like wanting a pizza and getting a burger. I'll take your word for it, that it was a pretty good burger. But, I wanted a pizza. da'fuk

Haven't watched the entire thing yet, but there's some minor things I wanted to respond to about DC1. 27:35 - You *do* find a few darts out in the wild, but they're fairly rare. You're even picking up a set of darts at 30:09 :P 44:14 - Kirk's prints can actually be picked up directly from him, but the game places Regina a small distance away from him when you talk to him. If you walk up to him from the front and use the fingerprint scanner, Regina will pick up his prints without issue. 45:10 - The existence of the wiretapping device and it's location are both revealed in the memo you highlight at 44:05. You wouldn't be able to enter this room before having been to the room where that memo is located; furthermore, that room has a terminal from which a puzzle must be solved, and the memo is in-frame when standing in front of that terminal, giving the player a fair opportunity to spot it. 45:34 - Minor nitpick: The code isn't found in a *memo* , rather, the memo in this room gives you directions on how to obtain the code: you need to use the 6-digit code that you worked out when doing the sound puzzle just earlier, split it into two 3-digit codes, and then add a 0 to each 3-digit code to create two new 4-digit codes. I'll grant that it's definitely a complicated puzzle to solve, though. Few if any expect that they'll need to hold on to the 6-digit code from the sound puzzle, and the directions for splitting the code into two 3-digit codes before tacking on a 0 to each of them aren't fantastic. It's possible the directions were less confusing in Japanese, however, as the game *does* have issues with the translation in places. I could go on with minor things for the Dino Crisis 2 part, such as the fact that David didn't crash the helicopter out of incompetence, but because it ran out of fuel, but I think I'll take a break updating my comment from here. As an aside, the Playstation 1 was my first ever console, and I grew up with Dino Crisis 1 and later Dino Crisis 2 on account of it being dinosaur games and my parents overlooking their age ratings (lol). I wish Dino Crisis 3 had been the game it was meant to be, and I wish Capcom would stop being sadists when it comes to baiting fans of this franchise :(

I was a very big fan of dino crisis when I was a kid, my parents didn't want me to play resident evil as it depicts gorey violence against humans, apparently gorey violence against lizards was okay. I really appreciate the nuance analysis of dino crisis 3, since as a small and dumb child I really liked this game. I was amazed by the metroidvania-like structure of it (not being able to play metroid prime until much later) and the quick punishing combat that kept me on my toes, I enjoyed the sub weapon system, all the frantic mobility in combat allowed by the jet pack and by the auto aim and like every kid at the time without much money, I beat the game several times. My biggest really childish criticism was the lack of actual dinosaurs, replaced by weird fleshy monsters. I never knew how hated it was until years later. Of course I am now well aware of its flaws, but watching your review I cannot help but wonder if there is some camara hack possible along with other minor adjustment, like some lock on feature that allow you to manually circle between targets, that could partially redeem this game from its awful reputation. I mean... that is what happened more or less to sonic 06, another game considered one of the worst of all time, by the fan-made project 06. Which fixes bugs and general crappy gameplay issues, but keeps the level design and structure intact, even down to things like vehicle sections, that some people now have come to appreciate years later. Of course I am not saying that dino crisis 3 is some kind of diamond in the rough, some tragic master piece. Just that the good ideas, and there are plenty, are extremely overshadowed by comparatively few very unfortunate decisions. Like every other fan, I really hope we get some new dino crisis game in the feature, although maybe unlike most fans, I am not too keen on the current focus on mass appeal of the resident evil games, which kind of forget about all the experimentation that the franchise had before. I would like someday to get a new classic style of resident evil, but I don't think we are going to get that. So I think it would be cool if instead we get new dino crisis or a dino crisis 1 remake in the style of RE1 remake, tank controls and all. And... to be in an even more extreme minority. I would really appreciate if the dinosaurs were updated to be more accurate to our current understanding. Which means completely feathered raptors. Which I think are perfectly viable as terrifying monsters, similar to how crows are a staple of horror iconography. Honestly to me, bold raptors look now more silly than scary.

You remember every single hallway and every painting and the music for areas. That style is why we talk about these games 20 years later. My daughters plays these old games because of the quality that isn’t seen today. That’s my opinion.

Love the video! But. I will say that I don't entirely buy the "the controls are bad to make it scary and dangerous" angle. If the game just decided that your controller shuts off for 5 seconds at random intervals, or buttons randomize which does what action every minute, that would make control difficult too. But that's not an enjoyable kind of difficulty. Neither are the bad controls in Dino Crisis. In the same way, when a game character can't do an action they clearly SHOULD be able to do, it's frustrating. It's the same frustration (except worse because of lost time to a death) when you can't hop over a waist high fence. Or when you need a key for a door despite having rocket launchers and chainsaw hands. I've played plenty of horror games, including tank control ones, where the game felt WAY better to control. Sure, this is a PS1 game so it gets a pass somewhat, but I don't really buy into the whole "it has to have sucky controls or it wouldn't be scary". Other games have disproven that narrative time and time again. You can have tank controls that play much better than they do here and still have a scary game. Getting hit because the character is unreasonably unresponsive isn't good difficulty or danger.

Me and my now deceased mom used to play this game (the first one) together. My mother was also a red head so i think the character (Regina) resonated with her. My mom played almost no video games so this was a very special time for me. I miss my mother greatly, but the impressions she left on me will never be forgotten. I will cherish them and pass them onto my daughters ❤️

Loving the incredible deep dive so far. At time of writing this I am part way through the Dino Crisis 2 deep dive. Want to correct a couple of points. In the opening sequence Dylan and Regina are attacked by a T-Rex not the Giganatosaurus. And when you talk of the non combative dinosaurs the "Stegosaurus and her baby" is actually a Triceratops. Otherwise this is fantastic work so far.
@IFinishedAVideoGame2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it looks like I completely borked some of the dinosaur names in this script. Not sure how I managed to do that (probably a combo of the heatwave and having covid) Glad you enjoyed the video regardless!

@@IFinishedAVideoGame I will also point out a few things with my time with Dino Crisis 3. I agree that part the let down is because the story doesn't continue and we have no Regina...but the enemies just feel unfair being absolute sponges and being able to teleport through walls. The camera is abysmal with one notorious jump half way through going through 5 camera transitions that change your control scheme with each transition. Also the ship; while transformation is a good idea...all the corridors and segments feel soulless and samey and it really makes it feel weird that anyone could ever have lived on the ship or would want to. And lastly I feel that having weird hybrids instead of actual dinosaurs...as a dinosaur fanatic I feel let down.

I really do love DC1 and DC2. DC1 gives me the same satisfaction that RE1 gives me. However DC2 is much more memorable to me simply because of the ending. I'm still waiting for Capcom to write a proper sequel. I want to see Regina save Dylan and Paula. I agree that the Dino Colosseum and Dino Duel are so fun. I remember playing it with my friend on his house just to fightbas dinosaurs hahaha. I really miss the PS1 era

I must thank you for making this video.. not for the reasons you may expect though. One of my mom's friends (who coincidentally recently died from his alcoholism, his name was Matt) played what I now strongly believe to be Dino Crisis 1 or 2 when I was extremely young, somewhere in the late 2000s I think. I only remembered him being in a jungle/forest setting playing as a woman who slaughtered dinosaurs and for over a decade I would randomly wonder if that was even a real memory or a dream I had. Even he told me he didn't remember playing a game like that. This video being recommended to me, with the vaguely familiar looking woman in the bottom left of the thumbnail, and the title mentioning a game about dinosaurs, instantly sent me over ten years back to that particular memory and confirmed it was indeed real. I'll have to try these at some point. I especially like the concept of the first game. Hitman is probably my favorite game franchise ever and I love how you are an absolute menace in it, but a game where you are far from the apex predator seems refreshing..

Dino Crisis 2’s underwater section was the game that taught me that I have severe motion sickness. The screen effects absolutely sell it as being underwater, but perhaps a little too well. I remember sitting on the couch with my dad on the weekend as we took turns playing levels, and barely a minute into the underwater section, I dropped my controller on the ground and ran to the bathroom. I still love the game regardless!

2 nitpicks. 1. The "other raptors" from Dino Crisis 1 were meant to be Therezinosaurus'. At the time nobody knew whether they were carnivores, herbivores or omnivores, cause they hadn't found a skull then. Now we know that, despite their massive claws, they were herbivores. 2. You say GigaNTOsaurus. Though there's a species of dinosaurs known as Gigantosaurus. But they were sauropods (aka long necks). They don't appear in the Dino Crisis franchise. GigaNOTOsaurus on the other hand was a theropod. And it appeared in the games. But besides this you really did an excellent job. Especially on Dino Crisis 3. It's been easily 15 years since my last play through, and I still feel the frustration. That bloody camera was such a pain in the ass. The plot was pure bred shit from the start. But fuck it, I had fun with that. The only thing to round it up perfectly would have been a 4th character, who's a one liner spewing, cigar smoking, minigun wielding, overly muscular Austrian killing machine. Also, I kind of have a soft spot for the monster designs. Especially that Ankylosaurus one. For a schlocky bad game, the designs were really nice.
