Of the catfish series, I plan on owning the 7’ casting version for pier and maybe boat work, or heavy bass fishing, and the 8’ spinning version as an entry level surf rod. I currently have the ML striper rod and also plan on getting the MH version as well. Cheers!

I had to ask a question to Cabela's a while back determining which rod is different from one another. They both look almost the same, but the person who replied to my question said the Catfish rod has longer grips than the Striper version. By watching this video, now I know the true difference between the two. Thanks. I might invest in the catfish rod, but not sure which length to get yet. I wish the 7 ft rod was two piece, but it's not. I want to use that with a Zebco 888 for some serious big lunker catfishing hopefully next summer.

@ifishcatfish4 жыл бұрын
yes, i only use circle hooks for catfishing. The rod doesn't make much difference, if any. You will lose a lot of fish with circle hooks with any rod because of the slippery design. There is nothing a rod can do about it. I have a video called The Truth About Circle Hooks

*Is everything you would expect from uglystik! Very reliable and strong but still sensitive enough to feel the bottom or small bites.*
@ifishcatfish4 жыл бұрын
It is not sensitive though. People use this word unjustifiably for Ugly Stiks. Yes, the tips is very soft, and if u drag baits on the bottom u can see the tip bend when u go over small humps or u get bites from small fish. You can SEE but you cannot FEEL. If you get the rod in your hand, you will not FEEL the bites the same way you would feel them with a bass rod for example. Ugly Stiks have a glass blank and steel guides and are definitely not sensitive. No good for bottom bouncing, for example, where u need to actually FEEL the bites, not see them..

10'6 Ugly stick??? I don't know if Ugly Stik makes rods that long, but if they do, i do not recommend them. I seen you had several rods of these makes. I would have liked to have seen numbers compared across several rods. Is the diameter difference just the tolerances of manufacturing?? And if it is then different rods of each kind will show a little different bend. I also wonder how more or less guides effect the curve. Instead of running line to reel put a hook on it and hang it from the guides. Good video though.

Which rod would work better with circle hooks? It looks like the catfish rods would allow the fish to take the bait with little resistance and then load up and set that hook. While the striper rod would allow more resistance that the fish may detect. Thoughts?
@ifishcatfish4 жыл бұрын
I never understood the logic of that argument. The fish swallows the bait and starts to move. It doesnt matter what rod u have, it will load up just the same. The fish doesnt need to swallow the bait either. It just has to be in the mouth. It is not like aligator gar that carries the bait ti the deep hole and doesnt swallow until it gets to the hole. Carfish swallows on the spot and u can set the hook. The whole thing never made sense to me.
@stepheno.27304 жыл бұрын
i_fish true. The blues have been biting very finicky lately where I’m at. Hitting the bait and then dropping it if they feel any resistance. Odd
@ifishcatfish4 жыл бұрын
But ok, lets say it makes sense, even though i dont understand how. Why do u think the catfish rod has less resistance? The tip is softer but the blank is stiff like a broom. U get a few inches of flex in the tip and thats it, no more flex anywhere. With the striper rod when the fish pulls the entire blank will flex and the entire blank will load. Then when u fight the fish u actually use the whole blank. The catfish rod uses only the tip of the rod for absorbing the pull of the catfish. The striper rod has the better blank for sure. The only advantage of catfish rod is it has one more guide, but who cares about that on a ugly stick
@stepheno.27304 жыл бұрын
i_fish I can see the logic in that argument. I may try out a striper rod some enough. Informative video, thank you for sharing.
