In this video, the mystical center of Sri Lanka, Kandy, mesmerizes with its mystical atmosphere and rich history. The city is filled with serene lakes and historical structures dating back to ancient kingdoms. However, its greatest allure lies in Sri Dalada Maligawa, one of the world's most significant Buddhist temples.
This temple stands out for housing what is believed to be the tooth of Buddha. According to legend, after Buddha's death, his tooth and remains were cremated here. The temple was built on this sacred spot, becoming one of Buddhism's holiest sites over time.
Located on the shores of Kandy Lake, the temple reflects the elegance of traditional Kandyan architecture with its white walls and red roof. It consists of three parts: the outer courtyard, inner courtyard, and the chamber where the sacred tooth relic is kept.
Sri Dalada Maligawa holds immense importance not only religiously but also historically and culturally. Until the British occupation of Sri Lanka in 1815, the temple hosted coronation ceremonies for Kandyan kings, making it a symbol of the island's struggle for independence.
Every year in July or August, the temple hosts the grand festival known as Perahera. During this festival, a special ceremony is held to bless the tooth relic of Buddha and pray for the prosperity of the island. Considered Kandy's largest event, the festival attracts thousands of people to the city.
Sri Dalada Maligawa not only offers visitors a religious experience but also serves as a window into Sri Lanka's rich history and culture. This magnificent temple, a must-see for anyone visiting Kandy, is truly the heart of Sri Lanka.
