Interesting how trailer brakes evolved differently on the other side of the world from what we have here in the US. Not better, not worse, just different. Of course, even here we have 2 different 'systems' (Electric and surge) and even different versions of electric.

actually thats a UK trailer not NZ. drums are the cheap budget option here and not all that common. most common is surge/inertia hydraulic disc braked. just like the suspension on that trailer which is also the budget version and not all that commonly used.

@@tweake7175 Here it is mostly electric drums. Surge brakes are usually used for boats and rental trailers. The electric drums work well, but just like anything, stay on top of the maintenance. Some of the really big rv's use electric over hydraulic and discs to go with it. Nice systems, complicated, but a notch above the drums. Usually only used when you get up in the super expensive 5th wheel RV's. Mine, at 6000#'s happily gets by with the drums. Emergency braking is by electrical disconnect. Small 12v battery (Or house battery in case of RV's) attached to a breakaway switch that sends full battery voltage to the brakes should the truck come separated from the trailer.

@ctechbob its similar here. Except its mostly surge instead of electric. Cost, wiring etc puts people off electric. Especially as they often use different tow vehicles. Aussie has more electric because of their towing laws.

i thought UK did have hydraulic brakes, but they must have a cable operated parking brake. that makes it very expensive to have hydraulic and cable operated. drums are cheap and work well for parking.
