ABC Colour Test Pattern, Boat Slide, Clock, Behind the News Excerpt (ABS-2 a.k.a. ABC-TV, 1980)

Here's an ABC Colour Test Pattern, Dry River with Boat Slide, Clock, Behind the News The Future Hong Kong Excerpt from 1980 found at the end of the tape. Recorded off ABS channel 2 in Adelaide which is a part of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. Taken from a National E-180 VHS Cassette. I found at my school. So I converted it to DVD. All rights for this video go to Australian Broadcasting Corporation and the music in this slide is owed by their respected owners. I'm only uploading it for Historical and Nostalgic Purposes and the fact the they don't show it on TV or DVD. Sorry it's missing most of the test pattern and the rest the that BTN Episode because it get to the end the tape but with there's old VHS tapes you have to take what you can get. I find it interesting that they specify it's in color as if by 1980 that was special, kinda like TV stations today still signify they're HD when that's the norm

brings back fond memories of primary school in a small country town and our class was herded into the staff room to watch BTN on a 25" black and white Astor TV. I would have watched this episode on it!

I remember the ABC playing a record about a boy called Sparkie who thought that trains could talk and his piano lessons. I used to get so bored with it so when I was younger I'd switch the TV off until 3pm go outside and play then come inside at 3pm to watch Sesame street. They were the day's!!

That's the way it was Channel 2 ABS Adelaide remember since 1975 regular programmes for schools BTN was part of it a class bludge from teachers primary school days and watch test pattern clock and early access to to colour TV remember 1976 Montreal Olympics in colour at school yet at home we only had 1966 Kreisler Black and White TV. Wow go to school and see colour TV yet also at my primary school we had 1 inch real to real video recorder in black and white at the same time recording ABC School telecast. I was fascinated as how to get a visual image from a magnetic tape even it was monochrome. I was early days dealing with Super 8 film and Kodak slides. Great stuff. 2021 is another time now. Richard Morecroft as well is as another respectable Aussie TV icon. Ansett 727.

They were around since 1970s

Back in this era the ABC actually used to have gaps in programing throughout the day where test pattern and music would air. This would be one of these as BTN would not have been the first program of the day. I believe they continued to do this until the mid 80s.

It's crazy to think that TV stations used to have a "close" back in the day where programming would stop and they'd just show test patterns until the next morning.

Mostly it was a tone but they used wake up music before shows came on

Not too many US stations did stuff like this though.

mostly static was used but 30 mins before the station started they played music over the Wheele Ball

@@ChristopherSobieniak thats cos US stations had more money, this was and still is the national broadcaster for the nation, America doesnt have a national government funded Tv station apart from PBS which isnt government funded and thier stations didnt necessarily service the entire country cos they had provincial channels anyway so its like comparing apples and oranges. And since people were just asleep before the days of internet anyway they saved money by just closing.

I'm a bit surprised by the background music used under that slide/clock. The only piece of music I can remember being played under the ABC clock was "Portsmouth" by Mike Oldfield, but maybe that was the only piece of music that stuck out at me when I was little lol

I don't know why we don't see this on TV anymore? KZbin is taking over television, I found a way to bring it all back in time for 2020 all thanks to social media.

They used to start and stop during the daytime on weekdays.

Well theyre Mancini tunes so must be, youve answered your own question, back in the late 70s they had that drumbeat on medleys of all sorts

Ha, the disco era was still strong in 1980, thats a medley of Henry Mancini tunes if Im not mistaken, I dont think mancini's tunes lend themselves very well to having a drum beat over them though but they put a drum beat on bloody everything back then, it was a fad.

Those 'Hooked On...' medleys give me the irrits! (The drum machine is brutal...always hated it.)
