The ‘cruising altitude’ is a basic rule that both controllers and pilots must follow. let’s dive into learning cruising altitude.
The rule we explained in this video is the semicircular rule.
- Eastbound - Magnetic track 000 to 179° - odd thousands
- Westbound - Magnetic track 180 to 359° - even thousands
Countries where the major airways are oriented north/south (e.g., New Zealand; Italy; Portugal) have semicircular rules that define a North/South rather than an East/West track split.
In Italy, France, Portugal and recently also in Spain, for example, southbound traffic uses odd flight levels; in New Zealand, southbound traffic uses even flight levels.

The aircraft that gets a higher altitude saves more fuel than the other. ATC can give undue benefits to specific airlines by giving them cruising higher altitude.

Great video, well explained! But what happens when the flight plan change the direction of the flight from east to west for a small part of the flight? Do the pilots have to change altitude, does the ATC have the responsibility to assign a new altitude even if the pilot don't ask for a flight level change? For example if a plane is at FL360 heading 350 degrees and for 20nm in their fight plan they need to turn to a heading of 020 degrees do they need to change their flight level?

I've never flown bever will but I thought I like to read up on things got interested in watching airport atc videos etc, I must admit I thought all planes fly at 23,000 feet that it and there will be no more in a given airspace at a time than 30 aircraft wow I am amazed how many planes are up at any one time , I don't now but we used to live on flight path for at least 4 airports, and I used to think there's not much between them, I know its morbid but me and mum worked out if one csme down thed crash near more open hillside than we were but it was always a fear of mine because we had quite a lot of light aircraft over our area as well

4:50 ACC controller? You mean ATC?
@virtual-atc
@virtual-atc Жыл бұрын
ACC is short for area control center, and those working at the ACC are air traffic controllers. ACC is just a position, just like TWR (Tower), GND (ground), or APP (approach).

So tis depends on the aircraft heading and if it's odd it higher and for even it's low ?
@simonhughes-king8493
@simonhughes-king8493 2 жыл бұрын
NO. Going East is odd flight levels, like FL330. Going West is even flight levels, like FL360.

what if a plane needs to go higher or lower because of bad turbulence?
@atcforyou2020
@atcforyou2020 2 жыл бұрын
You can ask ATC for higher/lower altitude if you have a reason such as turbulence.
