I once had a trip to this island with my family when I was a little kid (20+ years ago). It was 100% controlled by National Park, so no hotel, flashy resort, nor the restaurant (That's why the nature condition of this island is always at the top notch). We had to spend our night in wood bungalow (no AC, of course) or tent, and had our meal at National Park's cafeteria. I even remember that my dad woke up in the middle of the night to have the battle against a giant centipede that invaded our bungalow. What a priceless memory. lol

@IfWeGoTo Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the praise. Also I'm conflicted about making the Surin Islands famous. On one hand, more exposure means more resources to protect them. On the other, too much visibility and they may succumb to mass tourism like other beautiful Thai islands, e.g. Phuket. Still we chose to make this film in an attempt to capture the islands as they are. Tourism or not coral reefs are unfortunately at risk of disappearing.

@IfWeGoTo Жыл бұрын
Hello! Thank you! So happy to hear it was informative! We kept most of our luggage at our “home base” in Khao Lak! We had double booked there and the Surin islands because the rooms were affordable and the staff had a back room where they kept our valuables locked on our 3 day trip. A nicer hotel may be willing to just hold your bags for a couple of days if you don’t want to double book, but I would call to inquire just in case! :)

@IfWeGoTo: I have liked and subscribed to your channel. If I do this tour on my own and not as a package, would the 200 baht ride take me to the same snorkelling spots they took you to or would they be different. Any snorkelling spots on Surin Islands which stood out for you which I must absolutely do when I visit? From a snorkelling points perspective, should I go for a package or book directly with the National park longtail boats. Any additional tips you have for doing this trip on my own. Please let me know. Thanks.
@IfWeGoToКүн бұрын
Many thanks!!! I am not sure how the fees/boats work if you were to pay directly at the park - only that it is an available option. I know they based our sites on what was clear/good that day based on the weather/currents/water clarity. Or at least they said that! All of the spots were fantastic, I really don't think you'll go wrong wither way. We didn't love the area the sharks were in because it was damaged, BUT we got to see sharks so! We really enjoyed the ease of the tour. It is more expensive, but it's also very straightforward and they provide everything at every step. I what you choose would depend on your budget and your available time. Generally I'd recommend the tour if you're visiting on a vacation. If you're doing a longer trip with loose plans and want to spend more time on the islands, I would probably opt to book on my own with the park!

@@IfWeGoTo Thank you for the provided information. Appreciate it. It is absolutely vital to plan my upcoming Surin trip. Happy Travels!
So sad to see most corals died at Surin Islands. I remembered how amazing of coral and sea creatures when I snorkeled there 20 years ago. 😢
@IfWeGoTo Жыл бұрын
yeah it is super super heartbreaking to see our reefs suffering. when we were out swimming some patches of water were SO hot... like as hot as a hot shower or bath. And lots of fishing boats that should not have been there were around. I can see why the reefs are struggling. If it gives you any hope, some corals will likely overcome what's happening. When studying our local corals in college, a previously ecologically devastated area was making a very quick comeback and some corals were growing back quite quickly - quickly in terms of corals anyways. It will probably take a very long time though!
