If you are non-Igbo and headed to Onitsha, be ready to lose not only your shirt, but your trousers too as your initiation. Come with very deep pockets and be ready to think on your feet. Some of the traders in Onitsha not only did five-year apprentices there, they were born in the town and are third or even fourth generation of the same family in the same line of trade since colonial days. They are super-disciplined and well-traveled; always prompt and ready to take a hair-cut and remain in the game, rather than get all greedy and lose their spot. The tragedy of Nigeria is 'allocation' and dependence on 'free' stuff. 'Free stalls' in Onitsha will only elicit laughter - they've known forever that free means lazy. I have given such replies two years ago (Enough of lies has been told and its right time we should start correcting such fallacies. I quite understand we are living in a society whereby majority of people would prefer to point fingers right from the comfort of their homes then smiles and nod to the rhythm when they are outside in the open space. However, I have always stood bodily to challenge any contrary point that's not reliable and deceiving to the public or affects my integrity. Let us treat the fallacious stigma once and for all. I have read severally about some accusations that Igbos does not sale lands to the Hausas/Fulanis and Yorubas then another claim that the Igbos enjoys the hospitality while residing in the North or West more than any other tribe in Nigeria. I asked how? And look at the irrational description they usually present. 1. Igbos are free to trade. 2. Own a land. 3. Build a house and accumulate other properties etc in their host states. These are the most comic statement I have ever heard in my entire life but without wasting much of our time, let us digest and bisect those infactual analysis. After the pogrom cum genocidal civil war, the Igbos were given only £20.00 even if you have had £1,000 in your account and also limited only to those who could prove it. From this same £20.00 they migrated to North and West to begin a new life. Their host community or state did not offer them free house, food or shop rather they paid and sustained themselves from that £20.00. As time goes on, they became successful and bought a land as the highest bidder not for free and build a house. They equally acquire more lands and shops for their business still as the highest bidder from the same £20.00 and none was given to them as a free gift. After many years has elapsed, there was no land to sale to Igbos in Lagos State, they began to sale swamp lands yet the £20.00 is enough to sand fill the swamps before any structure can be erected. In the North too, Igbos has remained the highest bidder which gives them the upper hand to acquire those lands at any given price and not for free. (Abeg is this £20.00 no dey finish? £20.00 nkea a odighi agwu agwu). Now let us analyze the pathetic claims of this whistle blowers to understand how the Igbos are treating them unjustly and does not allow them to buy a land in the East. What are the main occupation of the Hausas/Fulanis in the East? 1. Shoe shining not shoe designers or cobblers. 2. Begging 3. Local manicure and pedicure. 4. Selling of Onions or Beans with wheel barrow. 5. Local jobs inside the market. 6. Selling of cows which is the only lucrative business they're doing but unfortunately once they make the money, the next available loading 911 or Dangote trucks will convey them to North. Please, can a begger, shoe shinner or dirty local manicure or pedicure artisan raise enough money to buy a bag of rice talk less of paying a rent and buying a land? If we don't sell lands to them how is it possible for the Hausas/Fulanis to have mosques in the East. I am even sure that most of those lands were given to them free of charge by their hosting communities represented by the State Government. They claims we are not patriotic while we the Igbos leaves our shops for them to sleep free of charge, offer alms to Hausa beggers even more than any other tribe in Nigeria. Hausa/Fulanis prefers to sleep outside or squats with 100 occupants per a room. If you have ever seen Hausa/Fulanis coming down from the lorries that conveys them from North to East you would realize that they even bought their mats right from the North because they already knew that its all they need for the migration. What of the other part of the States in Nigeria even in Lagos, do they acquire lands over there, the answer remains "no" they exercise the same kind of attitude and lifestyle. Its only the top first class Northerners that could acquire a land and build a house in places like Lagos. What about Yorubas in the East? They have only one occupation which is sewing. Yorubas does not sleep in the street though feels comfortable living among other Yorubas mostly in an ancient building owns by another Yoruba. Without further doubt, sewing can not give them enough money to acquire or build a house because they are in a region that's more into Western and American mode of dressing and wears traditional only on Saturday's to attend functions that requires such attire. Therefore, the basic fact is, both the Yorubas, Hausas and Fulanis in the East does not have enough to acquire and erect any structure and that remains the truth. Its insane to sell a land that worths 2million Naira at 50k naira because you want to satisfy someone who also would sale the same size plot of land if carried to Lagos State at 200m Naira. We have come of age when we should stand boldly and challenge wrong analysis than hiding in our rooms murmuring its not true while remains mute outside. When you are been antagonized, you should fight back with facts to redress the issue. When they write in Vanguard, you should use Sun to balance the equation. When they call you a liar, you should diplomatically give such a person a befitting name "pathological administrative liar". I have done my own and its left for you to speak out and let your voice be heard. If I am wrong in my own analysis, someone should redirect me, all I want is my respect and integrity to be admonished not tarnished. The youths are the leaders of tomorrow, that's an insignificant parable not actuality in African continent because the youthful age of most our leaders starts at 50yrs upwards. So those below 50yrs are still daddy's pet and we can not continue to allow such laxity to progress further. It's time to challenge those face less demons only through being fearless and couregeous. Gummi is raising this issue because he wants to do mega cow business, he therefore needed land in the east to expand his colony freely against the people's verdict. Generally, an average northerner do not pay rent for shops and houses hence they deliberately chose to hawk and live in makeshift shelters or uncompleted buildings. What type of business does an hausa/Fulani man want to do in shops in Iboland? Is it the show shinning job, money changing job? Fruit selling jobs? Or manicure job? Or the cow rearing and selling shop?An average hausa/Fulani man want free land, shops and homes, therefore they cannot and will not pay for shops with the few gains they made from such megre business. Again, Ibos are naturally businessmen and women and our businesses goes across borders because of our potentials, business acumen and versatility. The Ibos easily carve a nitche when they identify a need to satisfy the society. So, they buy land, develop the land into proper use. They rent shops, houses and properties and pay adequately for it. They provide electricity, water and manpower to grow their business without waiting for government free allocations. Ibos are enterprising and highly competitive in business that no hausa man can strive to challenge within and outside iboland. Moreover, the ibo land is scarcely enough to accommodate the type of businesses and entrepreneurs needed to fill the land. The hausa/fulanis should understand that they need to do a lot of homework before thinking of doing business in another man's country or land considering the barriers to most business environments.
