Perfect choice. My favourite album. China girl and nightclubbing lead guitars played by Phil Palmer. Thanks for reaction!

Thanks for this reaction. Iggy is the real deal. Watch some live footage when you can. Or, once you have reacted to the Stooges, see if the doc. Gimme Danger is available on streaming anywhere.

The Peter Murphy version of Funtime is excellent. Peter’s rich low voice. And with him you can hear the bit of humor in the lyrics. Plus Iggy’s is a bit of a wall of sound. You can hear the separate parts of the song in Peter’s.

This one took a few listens but once it clicked…Lust for Life was an immediate favorite and definitely worth checking out as well

Bowie went on the road with Iggy as his piano player for a short US tour promoting the album in March 1977.

Not just US. I saw Iggy at the London Rainbow, Bowie played keyboards.

@@nobrains6107 Yep, I saw the tour in Manchester. Brilliant, and so strange to see Bowie as just part of the band.

I'm sure I've told you before but alumnus = singular male, alumna = singular female, alumni = plural male/mixed genders, alumnae = plural female so Carlos is an alumnus, Carlos and David are alumni, Susan is an alumna, Susan and Judy alumnae and Justin didn't graduate. 😁 This is a good album and, if released under Bowie's name with his vocals, would have fitted nicely into his catalogue.

I really like the monolithic, hypnotic "Sister Midnight", which Bowie would cover two years later as "Red Money" (with different lyrics) on his Lodger album. The guitar riff and rhythm section really swing! On the other hand, the draggy "Nightclubbing" never caught my attention. I don't think there's much going on all the way through, even if it's far from bad. The repetitive, ponderous "Funtime" is reminiscent of the Stooges era, especially when it starts to go a bit haywire towards the end, but this would be Stooges on anxiolytics, not amphetamines, with Iggy's slightly pasty vocals and some very weird backing vocals. Well, this mix of raw, slow-motion rock and zombified vocals makes for a pretty good end result. The bass and piano part of the track "Baby" reminds me vaguely of "Dead End Street" by the KINKS. I like this nocturnal song, with its half-despair/half-optimism flavour. Conversely, the acclaimed "China Girl" has always put me off, both in its original version and in Bowie's cover version from the early '80s! I hate the stressful xylophone, which doesn't sit well with the saturated guitar parts, and I hate Iggy's insecure vocals, which become a veritable sonic torture when the bridge "Visions of swastikas in my head, Plans for everyone, It's in the whites of my eyes" kicks in. The long "Dum Dum Boys" has a deliberately monotonous structure, but it gives off a gripping, lasting impression, and in the end I find this track really good. "Tiny Girls" is a typical Bowie ballad from the early '70s! It sounds like something out of Ziggy Stardust or Aladdin Sane, with David playing the sax part! Nice, but nothing more, and a little stylistically out of place. "Mass Production" is a big, compact, eight-minute block that can be both irritating and fascinating, with its repetitive, cold, tortured synth sounds and its foreshadowing of industrial rock. That said, despite its austere ambience, the track is still very approachable, and Iggy does very well in this particular context. I'm sure that this piece must have inspired the future members of Joy Division to write "I Remember Nothing"! Personally, my least favorite tracks on the album are "China Girl" and the more atypical "Tiny Girls". Everything else is fine.

@@JustJP Thanks Justin!👍 Oh, and I"ll add that the "China Girl" in question happened to be the girlfriend of French singer Jacques Higelin who was a regular at the Chateau d'Hérouville at that time (Grace Jones would cover one of his songs, "Pars" on her album Warm Leatherette in 1980).

Excellent review and good lp. Nightclubbing is my fav. I think you would like the cover of Funtime by Peter Murphy , it has more energy. I know this lp and Lust for Life are the highly regarded solo lps , but I still prefer 1979’s New Values. His newest “Every Loser” from last year is worth a listen as well.

Not a bad album, but a bit of a mixed bag. At times basic, raw, and with Bowie's dabs all over it... That said, some good stuff here, strong opener, but the stand out (for me at least) is Dum Dum Boys. The flip side, that closer, really lets it down for me. A disappointing, laborious durge, a skipper of a track if I ever heard one.
