The original games were based on Greek mythology, as Kratos is a Spartan. The constant conflict of son killing father, as Zeus killed his father Cronos, and Kratos was actually a son of Zeus (at least in the games). Kratos killed Zeus, but then left the Greek world, and came to the Norse world, where he met his wife and had his son Atreus. That was the whole point of Kratos' statement about ending the cycle, as he killed Baldur.

The reason Mimir has a Scottish accent, is because he isn’t from the Nordic land in this game.

Whats interesting is how even though modern day things about norse mythology doesnt tell it fully as it is, it does get people interested and looking at the stuff and possibly wanting to know things even the real truth of things get interesting to look up.
@joedatius3 жыл бұрын
sadly the "real truth" is a bit of a hazy thing when it comes to Norse mythology. since there is a long history of Christianity messing with things and making it difficult to tell what was the actual norse myths and what is made up after the fact. the whole "thor is blond" thing is due to painters giving him blond hair to look more like an angel in the Christian depictions of the time using slender but muscular bodies and long flowing usually blondish hair and usually without facial hair or any body hair for that matter

At ~min 9 you say that GoW explains that light and dark elves are from different realms, but in GoW mimir states that they’re both from alfheim but the aesir gods named the realm of the dwarfs svartalfheim (dark alfheim) thinking dark elfes originated from there…and then mimir insults the aesir gods knowledge

Fantastic. We got to speak to Dr Crawford on the Pendelhaven fireside chat and we talked about linguistics and mythology for two hours. Absolutely magical stuff

There is a scene where the world serpent seems to remember Atreus, or as Mimir says perhaps a future version of Atreus. Seeing as Atreus is Loki, that is a very fun thing for people who know about norse mythology to catch.

It feels very much like the creators of the game were fully aware of how the myths go and all the way the broke from them was very conscious.

Jotunheimen is also the name of an area in Norway, a national park, which has the highest peak in the country - Galdhøpiggen.

Fun fact: Here in Sweden back in the early 2000's we used to have a site called "Mimir's brunn". meaning "the well of mimir" where we kids posted results on tests to help each other cheat. Anyone who knows anything about Mimir would understand this reference.

This is pretty interesting considering that Baldur is blessed with invulnerability to all threats, physical or magical
@bugkramps2 жыл бұрын
theres a few inconsistencies with atreus being loki in regard to the original myths (mainly with him being the father of jormungandr and being the child of two giants) but it was a nice bit of flavor that atreus was the reason why baldur's "curse" was broken. another interesting thing is that fenrir is hinted to be one of the main antagonists of GOW: Ragnarok when he is also a child of loki and brother of jormungandr

Perhaps it’s an idea to let the expert to play the game first and then to react, cause the game gives enough references or backstory to back things up. Cause plenty of time the expert can’t explain things cause he didn’t played the game
@tamelo3 жыл бұрын
Well. Some of those explanations are burried in optional quests and dialog during boat travel that most of it is lost in a regular play. And GWO is f*&* long game.

seems unlikely that experts will have time / want to play 20-40 hours for this kind of interview
@CecilioSprayetti3 жыл бұрын
Don't really think it would be necessary. The game is based off Norse mythology which he knows the ins and outs of like the back of his hand, Norse mythology isn't based off of the game. If something he notices in the game is not authentic to Norse mythology then the game would not possibly be able to give it a valid explanation because what it is based off of doesn't give it an explanation.
@soundwave24813 жыл бұрын
@@CecilioSprayetti Yes but by playing/watching he would understand why Mimir has a Scottish accent for example or why he has one eye in this scene again they are story related and not actual mythos but still it would give more insight about tha game itself
@merlith46503 жыл бұрын
@@soundwave2481 yeah, but the point of the video is not giving HIM insight into the game. it's to give US insight into real norse myth and history versus fiction

My working theory about the Realms and their inhabitants is that they simply traveled around the world. There could have been larger trees, a few of which were incredibly old and likely maintained by the land’s inhabitants out of either religious or general respect for nature. The “World Tree” or however it’s pronounced might have been even a giant tree with root systems that connected forests, or maybe they interpreted the larger Trees in different realms as “branches” of it.
