The Pedestrian was developed by studio Skookum Arts and was first released on Steam in January 2020. The game finally made its way to PlayStation 4 and PS5 a year later on January 29th 2021. The commentary in this episode is provided by Daniel Lackey (Artist), Jed Lackey (Programmer), and Logan Hayes (Audio designer).
The Pedestrian is a challenging side scrolling puzzle platformer. You play by rearranging and reconnecting public signs in order to explore its dynamic 3D world.

Try it out. It’s actually legitimately beautiful and mind shattering game. At the train, you’re supposed to put in a specific code, where it will take you to the next section of the game, and then you’ll come back to the train, punch in a new code and go somewhere else, but apparently the devs allowed players to punch in any code for any section, so this speedrunner skipped the majority of the game.

Kinda sorta usually,comes down to a collective of people random experience that where a bug or a freak accident that created a faster time in an area. Just comes down to a person who’s half decent at the game to pick all that fastest methods together and play the game. Dark souls one is the prime example before the sen glitch was found the best time was roughly an hour. I respect speed runners for there time just hate when there videos get crazy traction and are the first things to pop for a game.

There is a little insult to skip all the scenery and stuff they all put effort into I guess. But at the same time these speedrunners are people who have dedicated a lot of time to the game and in a way it's flattering to the developers for someone to spend so much time and effort into playing your game to play it as fast as possible.

Also speedrunners generally only run games that they really enjoy and don't mind putting 1000's of hours into. If they wanted to insult the game then they wouldn't speedrun it, and would run a game they enjoy more instead.

This game is such eye candy. Feels like there's a real lived-in world surrounding the puzzles. Also, I think speedrunners would be valuable personnel to hire on as playtesters if that's not a thing already. Then devs can work with trusted members of the community to decide what glitches/tricks need to be ironed out and which ones can be left in for runners that won't break the game for the average player.

Devs really need to remember most the people who chose to run their games are usually massive fans who played through their game multiple times; not to mention observing every aspect of it's design with the intention of playing it MORE. They didn't ignore anything; they've seen it a million times. It's a statement of love.

That's why studios should hire speed-runners as QA! We had a couple external testers that were all speed-runners, insanely talented and they can replicate the bug/issue 100% of the time.

The attention to detail in the world built around the signs here makes me wonder which of the devs has experience in that type of work environment. Often in video games, things are too clean or too purposeful in areas like that, but they absolutely nailed the look and feel of manufacturing / warehousing. Just the little idiosyncrasies of peoples work stations, how there is just random cleaning equipment and forklifts parked everywhere, "borrowed" office furniture, stick notes on everything, etc...

Started watching this then realised it's such a unusual game that i stopped watching very quickly and went off to see if it was on PS4 i ended up buying it and spending the last few days absorbed in the puzzles, my goodness what a wonderful game. The music is so nice & that last level left me with more questions about the whole story behind the technology behind jumping from sign to sign. And now i'm back to see how someone does it fast.
