I would have given anything to be a game designer back in the 80s and 90s. Games are so much more complex these days, but they're all built on the work of what artists like Romero did 25+ years ago, and the camaraderie, creativity, and eccentricities of the old-school game designers is rare these days. Now, games are made by hundreds of people confined to their cubicles, all taking orders and developing cookie-cutter games meant to appeal to the lowest common denominator in order to push as many sales as possible. And this is why I love indie games more these days.
@YouaNumbahOneRacist
@YouaNumbahOneRacist 8 жыл бұрын
Kevin Walter Except indie games which do exactly what you said in the first half of the paragraph. With the invention of digital distribution, anyone can make a game in any fashion they like, with no corporate oversight, and their numbers continue to grow every year. Shovel Knight. Don't Starve. Papers, Please. Cthulhu Saves the World. Without the ability to deliver the product directly to the customer without a publisher, none of these games would exist.
@youtubesuresuckscock

+Youa Numbah Oneah Racist Nah. Today's indie games are nothing like the indie games of the 90s. DOOM was, as Romero put it, state of the art. You will never see another state of the art indie game. The time has just passed for that kind of a thing. It costs too much money to make a state of the art game now. The 90s were unique because they hit that sweet spot where powerful, affordable commodity computers were available to kids working in garages and yet gaming was still in its infancy so budgets weren't that high.

+HowAbout NoSon Don't be so pessimistic, Minecraft and Path of exile are two games that did what Doom did back in the 90s. Sure, time has changed, the market has changed, people expectations have changed, but they did leave an impact. And yes, Doom is engraved in the minds of people that have played it, and it has also changed A LOT with the modding community. 2015 doom is not 1993 doom.

He talks casually about all this, while punching imps to death at 6% health on nightmare difficulty.

Well, now that I think about it, they were playing on Doomsday (I think? I forget which port they used, and I don't want to watch the whole video again to find it), and most source ports have more customizable difficulty options. It's possible that they could have done Nightmare but turned off respawning and fast monsters.

John Romero seems like one of the coolest dudes to ever grace gaming - sure he messed up with Daikatana but that was just one failed project and everyone makes mistakes but it's ok because he seems to look back on that game really fondly, the dude is just straight up talented and incredibly laid back. If only he was still making more Doom levels today, everyone would be incredibly happy whether they're the incredibly modded type of level or classic style ones like he did back in the 90s, we'd all be happy.

Yeah, that's because modern level designers make simple levels and fill them with thousands of pointless trinkets and superficial details. They try to make something that looks real, instead of something fun. In Doom, they had to try to make something interesting out of... well, squares and triangles really. Sometimes, limitations are a good thing.

***** Graphical quality is a major selling point for most companies. You can't advertise gameplay enjoyment. Pictures are the only thing you can do to showcase your game, so they push pretty hard. Sadly, this is contrary to what actually makes a game fun to play. It just so happened that when Doom was new, increased graphical quality and level design complexity were one and the same.

Is it just me or does this just reek of good level design? I mean, some of the ideas like showing you the "secret" and then letting the player work out how to get it was one of the things I loved about the first Dark Souls game. If you can see it, you can usually get to it. I haven't played DOOM in years, and yet watching this, I look back and see so many ideas and concepts that seem so amazing now in a world where we get mediocre experience after mediocre experience, and yet these guys did this shit back in the MSDOS days.

Epic Beard Gamer It is not "just you", my friend. :) I think the best part about Romero is that he really is/was "half coder, half CREATOR/artist". Beyond that, he was--at heart--a GAMER. He didn't turn into a corporate beast where it was all about churning out map after map after map or whatever. In other words, he had exactly the right kind of skill set going on to make a TECHNICALLY adept thing for a video game... but at the same time, not have it seem so ridiculously "sterilized" that it didn't feel alive and creative. Which seems to be the problem with a lot of game maps these days: they feel forced or just... sterilized. I actually designed 2 entire episodes of DOOM maps myself (not official of course, just my own), and although my work wasn't super duper uber epic, I remember getting a lot of great feedback, and people being inspired by the weird and creative design choices I made. :) For any who care, the episodes are called "Darkhell" and "Blakhell", and are probably available most anywhere Doom maps / .WADs can be found--free! :)
@failurestates
@failurestates 8 жыл бұрын
***** That's really cool. I've always admired the art that goes into level design. Honestly, I think that's why I'm so fond of DOOM and Dark Souls. Both show a great level of skill in making open ended asymmetrical levels that are aesthetically pleasing, and that subtly direct the eye toward key points of interest. Personally, I've never really had the patience to create levels or mods for games. It's just the kind of thing where my ambition outstrips my experience, and I end up giving up halfway. My creativity comes in creating music, and here too, the influence of DOOM can be felt. I've been creating metal music for over a decade, and for me, my music style has always been kind of like the DOOM design philosophy: scary-dark-fast. Kind of like how Romero made the kind of levels he would want to play, I make the kind of music I would want to listen to, and often, it's inspired by the high energy chiptune and midi tracks of old video games like DOOM and Mega Man. I'll def look for your DOOM episodes, as I just love seeing the kind of shit people come up with. It seems that games, like music, have this weird tendency where the more limited the tech, the more creative and interesting the things that people do with it become. Nowadays we have all this great tech to build games with, and it seems like it's just being used to make the same 3 or 4 games over and over again with a different coat of paint. Back in the early 90s, when tech was limited, you had all different kinds of games being made, all using what, in today's world, was pretty primitive tech.

Amen! I agree with pretty much 100% of what you are saying. Please feel free to share any links to your music with me--I'm actually pretty into independent artist's music... especially game reboots, for example, heheh! Also... you can find my work online via some people's PLAYTHROUGHS! I was literally shocked to see that recently... ... ...some people have been playing & recording both "Darkhell" and "Blakhell", lol. :D I should probably do the same sometime, maybe commentate a bit... just to see! :D

The second-best similar experience is when Shovel Knight was speed run at AGDQ, and the developers were in the audience . John Romero from this video actually seems like a really cool and laid back kinda guy. Maybe he just mellowed out when he got older, but that was surprisingly refreshing. Even when things got hectic or he got killed by Ryan he never raised his voice and had some interesting stories to tell. Doom/Doom2 really is timeless, I could fire up this game today and play the original levels or some custom wads and have as much fun today as I did back in 1995.

I'm so glad Romero has seen Brutal Doom. That is definitely the best Doom mod in existence by my reckoning. I think if it was released instead of Doom as Romero suggested, it would have been the most hated and played game in existence for at least a few years. I mean, that is sort of already true, but just to an even greater degree. I don't even know if Grand Theft Auto would have taken its place as "most-hated game by the general media" if that happened.

As would I.... although then I'd need to watch Daikatana. I'm still utterly amazed at the part in the N64 version where you go through a door, see Cerberus, an obvious boss fight, and then the fight doesn't happen.
@ssbj144
@ssbj144 10 жыл бұрын
DGneoseeker1 Sounds like a clear bug to me.. I actually have no clue about the N64 version other then the fact that it's a hell alot more linear than PC version. I never played the PC version back in the day because i never owned the game:D I bought it last year from GOG for about 3€ and there is something that like about it, and something i dislike about it. I can so see how the game failed due to bad management in the company, and due to it being a confusing creation of bunch of modders who changed very frequently (according to my knowledge). So something that someone might have started, he most probably never finished it. So some totally new guy ended up finishing it with a completely different vision than the guy who had started it (multiple visions on one object and weird outcome therefore). Then there was the thing that Romero wanted his "non-DOOM" gameplay in it. The melee fighting thing which he wanted the original Quake to be about. Honestly, if you ask me about it, i think Daikatana would have been a quite great shooter had Romero just stayed with the traditional FPS design instead of that more unfamiliar melee fighting RPG progression thing. I will probably finish Daikatana though, since i don't find too much to play now that i'm wating on Woflenstein: The New Order to release.
@DGneoseeker1
@DGneoseeker1 10 жыл бұрын
The PC version at least certainly had potential. Pity about the terrible AI "helpers"... And the fact that you're told that the two Daikatanas must never touch because it would break space-time, but then you literally duel with the big bad guy Daikatana vs Daikatana... and nothing happens. The missing Cerberus was probably a case of deleting content rather than a bug. I seem to recall the N64 version had some other odd changes, like not needing a silver weapon to permanently kill werewolves. And the demon summoning weapon not summoning a demon.

DOOM 4 is awesome, and easily the best FPS I've played since Half Life 2, but I don't think it comes close to 'surpassing' the original DOOM games, for a number of reasons: -No ability to COOP the campaign -Also, poor multiplayer in general -Very limited modding potential... so far -Great level design, mostly, but not as ingenious or diverse as the originals -Personal gripe: poor sound design, on a technical level. The weapons sound really weak, and are often drowned out by the music (which is great, but intrusive at times). The super shotgun and plasma rifle, for instance, are no where near as satisfying as a result
@matternicuss

The chaingun does sound pretty good, and I really enjoyed how it had to rev up to full speed. I honestly just wish the audio design was more balanced... Again I absolutely loved DOOM4, I just want id to improve upon the formula for the next game, and fix some of the more egregious missteps.

@matternicuss - I pretty much agree with what you said. Doom 4 is Great. Original Doom especially now a days in enhanced GZdoom/Zdoom with its plethora of mod capabilities keeps the game alive. But it's all opinion. They are both great. Mine is Doom 2 with enhanced features makes it a bit more enjoyable in the long run.

Most people call Doom the granddaddy of modern FPS games but for some strange reason I think of it as the great-granddaddy. I like to think Doom is the great-granddaddy, Duke Nukem 3d is the granddaddy, Goldeneye 007 is the father, and then you have the current generation.

I'd say your response is sufficiently on-the-nose for me to presume you and I are of the same mind with Doom (2016). I think it's very much like Classic Doom with its fast-paced game play, no cover, no hiding, just running and gunning. It looks gloriously updated compared to Doom (1993) and I think I'll prefer it over Doom 3, just because *that* Doom was not anything like classic Doom.

I would definitely love to see an open world Doom game. I think it would be an interesting experiment. Doom is known for fast paced action but imagine more of a lonely desolate planet with tons of mystery and spurts of demonic hellfire. Or essentially doing Doom 2 as a Hell On Earth type. The demons have invaded and the world is in shambles type stuff and you put things back together step by step.

Man, sometimes stereotypes can be hit or miss, but with Carmack & Romero, they are spot on. Carmack is more nerdy and technical; of course he was going to be one writing the code (fun fact: he also was Dungeon Master when people at ID played D&D in the day). Romero seems the opposite, and he´s focusing on the creative aspect. It was a perfect combination.

Back in the time when doom was out circle strafing was not something every knew. This game taught you really well to circle strafe, from the imps, to the cacodemons, to the flying skulls, to the barons, and finally, the cyberdemon. It's easy because you already know it so well. It takes 2 hits to die from cyberdemon's rockets. Think about that for a second. You're taking your skill for granted, regardless where you learned it from.
