One of my favorite things about this fight is the part where Obi Wan breaks Vader's mask. Not only because it explains the scar he has in episode 6, but because of the narrative meaning behind it. He broke the left side of the mask and Ahsoka broke the right side. His master and apprentice were both able to break the façade of Vader and reveal what little remains of Anakin, but only just, still covered by Vader. It isn't until Luke unmasks him at the end of episode 6 that the façade breaks and Vader fully gives way to Anakin.

They do have training lightsabers in star wars, they give the kids (the padawans, aka "the younglings") watered down (usually yellow or white/blue) lightsabers that have a low energy output to only sting and lightly burn instead of handing out real "sharp" lightsabers that can cut and melt through several layers of the strongest spaceship blast doors that would ofc cut off limbs in a blink of the eye to kids in training, Luke was seen on the Millennium Falcon training with a training droid that had it's energy outputs lowered while he was training deflecring blaster shots with a lightsaber while blindfolded, got shot a couple times but didn't die, same principle, it's just training for the real stuff

Interestingly enough, the Vader focusing on domination goes back to his Jedi day. Anakin's master of Form V made him one of the greatest duelist in the Order. Form V, Djem So, focuses on dominating the opponent, cutting off their angles, limiting their space and mobility, and even forcing their own blade back onto themselves. The focus on domination caused the style to be highly discouraged by both the Council and Jedi at large. That being said, Anakin began focusing on it after his first duel with Count Dooku, and easily allowed him to overpower the aging swordmaster in their final duel. Mace Windu also noted that the style allowed Anakin to vent his emotions, something he had always struggled with, but unfortunately, also fed into his desire for greater power and more complete control.

for anyone not aware, the primary reason vader only ever used his right arm for the lightsaber was due to his new cybernetic limbs having a bit of a delay or a sort of lag from his thoughts as compared to his right hand which was replaced 20 years earlier that he was far more used to and was made with better tech, as palpatine purposely used outdated tech that kept him limited and in pain as punishment for losing to Obi-wan. the suit also prevented him from lifting his arms over his shoulders, drastically altering his fighting style and relying slightly more on his force abilities, the final fight with obi wan would’ve been the hardest and most painful thing he’s done physically in those 10 years, and with his conflicting emotions it makes perfect sense he was defeated relatively easily.
@Jezee2132 жыл бұрын
yea Palpatine actually gave hime worse tech than even his first cybernetic hand. He had to be one step ahead due to the lag and use the force to overcome more, after he lost his limbs he could only be like 80% as powerful as Palpatine or something.

@@Jezee213 Perfectly said. I've seen a lot of people complain about Vader's skills in this series, but neglect to think about the fact that Palpatine was intentionally crippling Vader to keep him exactly at a level that's convenient for him. Sure, maybe Anakin/Vader could have been the strongest jedi/sith living, but his extreme emotional manipulation took him down more than a few notches. In terms of eradicating jedi, it probably would have been beneficial for Palpatine to allow Vader to hunt down & kill Obi-Wan, but Vader was of more use as an emotionless weapon of fear. However in the second fight he was more self-assured and very much similar to the Jedi Master that he had been at the end of the Clone Wars which was something that Vader had wanted. Because in his mind he couldn't truly be considered a master until he bested his former master and maimed him in a similar fashion to how he got maimed on Mustafar. However despite the fact that he had learned quite a bit in the ten years since that fight on Mustafar she hadn't learned the lesson that his master had attempted to teach him all the way back on Coruscant. Which is why he was never able to fully best his former master. And once Obi-Wan escaped from that sinkhole that Vader had put him in if he was fighting with a renewed purpose as a result he stopped playing around with Anakin and actually pulled out the full ability in which he held

Such a great analysis & take. The brilliance of his analysis is his deconstruction of everything. He really explains how brilliant the choreography is & the nuance they obviously painstakingly incorporated into this scene really delivered in so many levels. It wasn’t just a pretty & stylistic duel that lacked substance but really hammers home the obvious motivations & nuance to the fight. It’s absolutely brilliant.

Absolutely agree. Lightsaber fights have always been fun in a flashy sort of way, but this is the one occasion that you feel you're looking at two masters of their art going at it. Like - obviously its choreographed. But there's serious verisimilitude to it that there isn't to the other duels in SW.

When it comes to lightsaber training the lightsabers actually have a I believe it was a button or knob that adjusts for when you're training that's how they can do that with the younglings

Training sabers: In Rebels, they show (not tell) that Lightsabers can be tuned to a non-lethal training setting. In Rebels, there's a distinct difference in the hum that the saber makes. They didn't change the sound design, but it's safe to assume that this is what's happening for the training scene. Rebels has some of the best saber work in all of Star Wars, including my all-time favorite fight: Maul vs Obi Wan (Final)

6:25 Obviously he won't see this but for anyone who's interested, they actually do have training lightsabers. It's actually a setting on the lightsaber that adjusts the power setting. Younglings lightsabers are locked into a low power mode until they go to a gathering ceremony and build their own lightsabers. Those younglings never even stood a chance against Vader.
@adamleblanc52942 жыл бұрын
Quick bit of info for the training fight. Some sources say that Jedi Sabers had a safety mode where they could be turned down for training and or if you were in a fight where you wanted a non-lethal option. Not saying that's what was going on here, but they very well could have turned their sabers into a sort of non-lethal mode for training.
@SnekZ._.2 жыл бұрын
Not really a non-lethal mode but more of a low power mode were atleast in star wars legends (idk about canon) were the lightsaber only would give you minor burns and one could even grab onto the blade for a short duration and only getting minor burns and thus not loosing limbs during training Edit: spelling error

Lightsabers in Legends have power settings that turn it from a cutting weapon into a shock baton. Also cortosis and beskar were extremely rare in the SWverse, and given how sabers stick rather than sliding, how fast Jedi/Sith reflexes are, and how most saber forms have been a thing for thousands of years, there was never really a need for hand guards.
@jacobwalsh18882 жыл бұрын
It's not a cutting weapon. It's a thermal weapon. They do not cut, penetrate, or lacerate. They burn, melt, and vaporize.

Hand guards would still be useful even if to ensure your hand doesn't have the danger of slipping into the blade. They could be tsuba-shaped as katanas.
@raider31672 жыл бұрын
@@RJMazz47 They could, yeah. And some lightsabers have handguards, or even crossguards made out of lightsaber-blade. However, Star Wars has a really big problem: Everyone's using tech based on an empire that the Sith overthrew with the Jedaii were still a thing, and tradition has largely overwhelmed such trifling things as common sense.

Most lightsabers have an adjustable power setting so that they can be made "safe" to practice with. We also see when Obi-wan cuts into Vader's helmet in the final fight that this is how Vader gets the scar on the top of his head we see at the end of Return Of The Jedi when Luke takes off his helmet.
@christianfrederikklausen62282 жыл бұрын
That cut has been on his head since the RotS Mustafar fight.
@snakeplissken66492 жыл бұрын
@@christianfrederikklausen6228 Nope if you go back & check the first bacta tank reveal of Vader at the end of episode 2 there is a very small scar in a slightly different place on that side of his head. Probably from being set on fire as Kenobi doesn't hit his head during the fight. The scarring after Kenobi cuts open the helmet is much more extensive.

So a couple of things, lightsabers in the novels seem to have a “low power mode” or training sabers, Vader is said to have a hard time raising his arms above his head (basically impossible for him), and Vader had a hard time with Obi-Wan because he expected his old master to you Soresu fighting form, not the Ataru Ben began using.

In the books that came out after phantom menace it was said that lightsabers can be tuned to a low power mode that will just stun like a blaster but less painful and more survivable. Which begs the question why jedi and blaster users don't have the stun setting as the default since it can end the fight just as immediately without the moral, psychological, and legal aftermath of taking a life. I'm sure modern police would give their pensions to have that ability.

So, lightsaber do actually have a power setting for training where they lower its energy and it makes it less able to cut but rather sting instead. That training scene they probably had their beams at a low energy usage so that it would only sting of they got hit as opposed to cutting
