Oh wow you made me realize it’s the same thing for me! NVC too (well it started with other names but I mean the Nintendo IGN podcast). Although I’m not married and the kid is still a bun in the oven for a few months but it’s CRAZY to think of it that way! These podcast are truly a part of our everyday lives and unlike tv shows or movies or whatever that can have months/years between seasons or whatever, you could actually go back and listen to a podcast from the week of any important part of your life haha!

The question about gaming tastes evolving is really interesting to me. As a 30 year old, I've been playing video games since I was 6 years old. My first personal console being the N64. As a French canadian, most of the games available were only in english and as I only started to learn a little bit of english when I was 9 years old, I could not understand what was going on. In consequence, I hated most RPGs and long games in general. That's part of the reason why Star Fox 64 stayed my favorite game for a very long time. I started to get into more complicated game really with Ubisoft games (which were in french of course) including Prince of Persia and Splinter Cell on the original xbox. Now today, my favorite games are huge RPGs like The Witcher 3 and Mass Effect and Fable and my english is much much better. So for me, the language barrier was extremely significant and crossing that barrier had a huge impact on my life in general, but also in gaming.

I want to jump in on the Daemi-lovefest for a minute too. Probably like every other viewer, and from the sounds of it, a lot of the staff, past and present that have worked at IGN, I think Mr Hatfield is a genuinely exceptional podcast host. As alluded to by Tina, Sam and Justin I think the joy and attraction of Daemon as a host is in part down to his natural charisma, unabashed joy in playing and discussing games, his down to earth personality and overall professionalism that makes him one of the slickest and likeable podcast personalities. As inextricably linked as Daemon is to Game Scoop, for me what makes this show above and beyond all others is it always feels like a genuine celebration of gaming. The enthusiasm for the games the 'Omega cops' discuss is always entertaining but what makes this show a little different for me is the lack of fear of expression a negative opinion too. Online gaming sites nearly always feel like desperate attempt to score points with the industry and often appear to be little more than an extension of the industry's marketing department. But that's not the impression I'm left with watching Game Scoop. This show appears to lack a mandate when others seem more desperate for the gaming industry's attention than its audience. Something that's notable about Game Scoop is when anyone temporarily steps in for one of the regulars they're instantly swept up on the wave of enthusiasm and love for gaming. I'm sure much of that is down to the prince of podcasts himself, but I also think the show itself has developed a personality and attitude that is as infectious to those on it as those that watch it.

I need to leave a second message, this one regarding the "does age affect gaming skills" question. As I'm older than everyone here this is a subject I've thought about a lot and as an extremely passionate gamer have always taken an interest in. There are two key aspects that determine the ability and skill of a gamer; attitude and practice. They're also the most likely to suffer with age, rather than the misconceived idea that 'slowing reactions' play! It's not simply a gamer's physical age, but their circumstances and time that play the larger role here and importantly they're attitude to gaming. The less time a gamer has to play, to practice, as with anything, skills inevitably diminish. With the advent of marriage, children, career, whatever, less time tends is understandably devoted to gaming. More dramatic though is attitude. I think generally we're more competitive when we're younger, especially concerning physical and mental ability. We tend to feel we've more to prove, as much to ourselves as to others, and that positively affects our ability. When we're young we understandably see ageing as a negative. For the most part many of the issues and subjects relating to this are warranted but importantly most people allow these prejudices to be more prominent than they need be and ultimately fall on 'age' as an excuse for simply not caring about something that meant more to us when we were younger. The key to the general lack of ability lies squarely in attitude. An excellent gamer and a terrible gamer can have almost identical reaction times (the human brain is incredibly consistent on this), intelligence and physical ability, but it's attitude, specifically determination and a competitive nature that's the key difference. With regards reaction times the diminished ability with age (obviously excluding extreme old age) is actually fractions of a second. You don't lose a virtual fire fight because the opposition had better reactions than you; you lost because the opposition had better tactics, more skilled aim and may have been more practiced and possibly more competitive; their reaction times and brain capacity didn't simply out-speed yours!!! It's disingenuous for anyone to use 'age' as an excuse for a reduced lack of gaming ability. I'm not sure why anyone ever cares to suggest this, other than it's generally considered an accepted social norm. Sure, I can't run or exercise as I used to. But it's not simply age; it's because I don't care to. There are older people that have physical abilities far beyond my younger self because of their attitude rather than their natural physique! I've only ever improved at gaming as I've aged... with the games I care about. Admittedly I game far more than I've gamed in the past. What has changed is that I'm far less competitive, far less interested in putting in specific practice to be competitive. In short, any diminished ability is simply down to not caring. I play shooters at their most difficult, and I find them no harder, or easier than I did decades ago! What has changed is I'm far less likely to persevere as the mental reward for success is of less interest than it has been previously. If I could play against the younger me I would easily prove to him that age will never be an excuse for reduced ability or skill, but caring to be competitive absolutely will take a serious hit as time goes on.

For the record, Cyberpunks gold covered people are augmented humans. This is explained during the story line with that musical artist. And to my recollection there were no robot prostitutes. Those are also augmented but with a special chip that kind of ties of their real persona for the experience. This is heavily explained during the main quest. I can see why you'd forget these things but thought I'd clarify anyway. :) I'm also not sure I'd call the taxis robots. They are self-driving, but I wouldn't call a Tesla a robot. Were there other types of robots? Everything in that world seems to be either an AI or an augmented human.

AS I GOT OLDER ... mid 40s now. I used to love the most complex RPGs with extremely deep systems and long winded text scrolls. Nothing was too far out for me to get into and learn. Now, I still like my RPGs. But if it is too complex and in depth. I tend to not want to bother. Seems like a lot of work nowadays. I picked up Baldor's gate and figured I am going to have a blast going back into those games. And it was about 20 minutes in and I put it away and booted up Assassin's Creed vallhalla and never spoke of it again ... until now. It is weird how this happens. It is getting to the point I almost dread picking up a new franchise because I now have to learn. Have I secretly hated this all along? Is it just too time consuming? I don't know. Just get me out there doing things as quick as possible is my guess. It is weird to me. And it happened over night.
