I think I vaguely remember the Farleys.

Everytime I think about that type of little store, hidden in the hollers of Appalachia, I think about those little cardboard cups of ice cream and those little flat wooden "spoons" wrapped in paper laying somewhere near the cooler.

I remember that ice cream will, it was always such a treat to get it.

My Great Grandfather ran the post office and mercantile for our community of Gausdale. When he retired in the 1960’s my Grandmother took over until the Post Office was closed in 1987. It was then the store closed also. Mom said the best bologna sandwiches we made in the old country stores. I remember eating bologna sandwiches at Grandmother’s store when I was growing up. Most of the time I sat out on the porch of the store and ate my bologna sandwich and sometimes I’d eat Vienna sausages( pronounced Vi-ennie sausages here in these mountains)

Is there a local historical society near you? They may have photos of it...or a local newspaper that's been around a while. Maybe the chamber of commerce. I'm willing to bet there's a photo of the place somewhere.

It's funny because your image of the RC, moon pie and boloney sandwich sure reminded me of my daddy. He grew up in Smith so little markets and boloney sandwiches were very important. He's gone now so I can't ask about Mable's, but I will ask my cousins.
